On this day in 1970, the largest U.S. farm worker strike in history, known as the "Salad Bowl Strike", began when field workers, organized with César Chávez and the United Farm Workers (UFW), struck, doubling the price of lettuce and costing sellers $500,000 a day.

The UFW had just won the Delano Grape Strike, which had lasted an astonishing five years, winning contracts with dozens of grape growers that were the first of their kind in agricultural history.

The origins of the Salad Bowl Strike lay in a jurisdictional dispute with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which had won the right to organize field workers after concluding a successful strike of drivers and packers in the lettuce producing sector in July.

The UFW strongly contested this claim, and, after negotiations broke down, between 5,000-7,000 field workers went on strike. The labor action was not just a strike, but also included mass pickets, boycotts, and secondary boycotts by the participants.

The price of lettuce almost doubled immediately, and the interruption to work cost lettuce growers approximately $500,000 a day. The strike was a bitter dispute which suffered violence and state repression. César Chávez, a leading labor organizer, was jailed after refusing to stop the picketing on court order. On November 4th, 1970 a UFW regional office was bombed.

The strike ended on March 26th, 1971 when the Teamsters and UFW signed a new jurisdictional agreement reaffirming the UFW's right to organize field workers, however jurisdictional disputes between the UFW and Teamsters continued for years afterward. In 1975, the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act (CALRA) became law, establishing the right to collective bargaining for farmworkers in that state, a first in U.S. history.

So I've been wearing pride flag stickers on my hard hat for about a month now (trans and gay respectively) and while I've unexpectedly not received any flak, I've also not had any random old men come up and tell me the most horrifying joke I've ever heard in that entire time.

Pretty good results so far even if I've been itching for a conflict about it for some weird reason I'll choose not to analyze

My mom talking about some asshole riding her ass and how you can't trust anyone on the road and then casually including that she pulled over to let them pass and then rode their ass with her brights on. ???!!

She's so vindictive. It's kind of ugly.

I love to think I'm in a queer, intersectional, lefty space only for people to justify Israel and think it's cute that they helped the cops catch someone robbing a major retailer. Really cool, really makes me think I can talk to or relate with literally anyone.spongebob-i-fucking-love

Today I stepped outside with a coworker and a spider kinda ambushed me. I stepped out of the way and bent down like "yo, what the hell are you?" And after a few moments of examination I was like "oh, it's just a wolf spider, completely harmless, couldn't hurt you if it tried" and my coworker was like "I don't get why they don't have somebody come spray poison around here"

I was so dumbfounded I couldn't even reply.

People that think using "they" as a singular pronoun is confusing because they is plural should be followed around with an air horn and have it blown in their ears every time they casually refer to someone as "they" so they can realize just how often most people do that normally.

Sometimes I wonder what it's like to have financially secure parents you can just pack it up and retreat to when you need to save money. For me "moving back home after college" was being the primary applicant for the apartment because my mom had and continues to have no stable income and bad credit. And now I'm jobless

Re: megathread topic

organized with César Chávez and the United Farm Workers (UFW)

Here's the flag of the UFW, without the sepia of the photo in OP:

The symbolism of the flag: The black eagle signifies the dark situation of the farm worker. The Aztec eagle is an historic symbol for the people of Mexico. The UFW incorporated the Aztec eagle into its design in order to show the connection the union had to migrant workers of Mexican-American descent, though not all UFW workers were Mexican-American. The white circle signified hope and aspirations. The red background stood for the hard work and sacrifice that the union members would have to give."

stuff I found a cassette of the 1980's Belgian techno anthem, "Pump Up the Jam" by Technotronic, that was released nearly 4 years before the events of Project Zomboid.

I'm not a smart person, I'm not lucky enough to have a good education nor am I clever or well read enouth enough to make that not an issue. But despite that I think the one thing thatll make me never care about the state or future of the US is the debt traps it inflicts on its own populations. You cant simultaneously lie about China doing debt traps when you do it to your citizens all the time.

They almost got me, i just paid off my student loans but to think what I could have bought with that money. I hate this place.
