Very disappointing they have not identified the common ancestor of all dumplings

Last Universal Common Agnolotti

I want to know what speculated environmental selection pressures drove the evolution of Tortellini, and if the superficial similarities to Ravioli are an example of convergent evolution or a re-expression of underlying synapomorphies.

Also why the fuck is Wonton not Gyoza's nearest relative? I demand to see this paper's methodology.

Its used as outgroup,

If you are doing a phylogenetic tree of all mammals its useful to include outsiders to "root" the tree, for example repitles and amphibia, but just some not all

ok makes sense, thanks for the explanation

The paper's authors clearly said that they didn't have the resources or connections to explore other filled pasta, so they chose to focus mostly on Mediterranean and select other filled pasta shapes. They never meant it to be exhaustive. It literally says:

The addition of other filled pasta and dumpling varieties from across Italy and Eurasia and the inclusion of other informative characters that can add further resolution to the phylogenetic inference are the next steps in this research. Evaluation of elements such as taste and methods of consumption would require surveys and experimental design and can perhaps be considered in a subsequent, more inclusive study on all Eurasian pasta ripiena.

I have my own issues with the paper, but they never claimed to have mapped all filled pasta shapes in the world.

~~>The paper's authors clearly said...~~

~~bitch please academic language is literally moon runes, im not putting more than max 1 min of effort into skimming a whimsical soy paper on a shitposting website~~

they never meant it to be exhaustive

yeah ik my point was that they needed to grovel more in their discussion section about failing to include the sheer variety of chinese dumpling types

~~never fucking mind my apologies, i thought this was the shitposting comm and could get away with low IQ shitpost, not the science comm~~ picard

*never never fucking mind, the paper was written by actual italians, they do indeed need to grovel more in the discussion section just for adding to their shithole's navel gazing admiration for their mediocre overhyped cuisine

Bit of a (pasta) stretch

Wait what, I'm confused. I know one of the authors of the paper and I thought it was an interesting methodology applied to food.

This chart looks kinda like a black sun if you've been training in the ukraine twitter mines for a few years

Bzzzzt look closer

Ah. To me it looks like a regular phylogenetic tree so I was very confused.

I thought that Ravioli had become fascist coded or something.

Oh, my interpretation was that it had a picture of It*ly and their cuisine on there anti-italian-action

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

im not sure if that's what op was going for, that was my best guess. there's also an isntreali flag and a picture of italy so those might count too

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Look closer among the outgroups

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ah yeah, gotcha. I did raise my eyebrows to that, and emailed one of the authors about its inclusion in the paper. They haven't responded back.

I know is hard to be oblivious to the massacres, but I love thinking of a legit ignorant pasta scientist catching strays

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Half of these are anime candies, right?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

Literally one of the pasta shapes' name translates to "little candy" (the one that looks like a candy wrapper), so you're not far off.

There was a pierogi shop across the street from my old apartment. God I miss that place.
