Friend’s parent met Fidel

Fidel met Khrushchev

Khrushchev met Stalin

So, four. I think.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Woah you got the Cuba Libre route!

[–] [email protected] 11 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I think Fidel met a ton of Americans during his visit(s) to the USA.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 months ago

That means plenty of opportunities for Americans to be close to uncle Joe

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago

I'm very close to this. My friend met Che's daughter, so I'm at 5, because we add one more.

  1. Without providing too much personal info, I’m connected to Golda Meir, who was Israel’s USSR ambassador in the 50s.
[–] [email protected] 13 points 5 months ago

Now that sounds like some fun history

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I met Poppy Bush once since he came to my middle school to do a speech. Maybe it was something like that.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Probably

Bush Sr.

Mao Zedong

Stalin

1: Alex Trebek

3: Pierre Trudeau

4: Nikita Khrushchev

5: Stalin

I'm not totally sure that Tebek and Trudeau shook hands ever, but they were both active in public facing roles in Ottawa at the same time.

The maple syrup route, I see

1: Joe Biden

2: Jimmy Carter

3: Brezhnev

4: Khrushchev

5: Stalin

I’m like 95% sure there’s a shorter path in there I just don’t know who those people actually met

[–] [email protected] 12 points 5 months ago

I want to say there may be a shorter connection via Biden and his handshake with Anwar El-Sadat of Egypt to some Soviet official to Stalin, but I'm not sure either

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Piggybacking on your Carter link but through Robin Williams or Al Franken.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Looks like Brezhnev met with Stalin in 1952, so you can skip over Khrushchev

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

If you met Biden, it's basically:

  1. Biden

  2. Some career politician who was around during FDR/Eisenhower's administration. Biden is a shameless sycophantic career politician, so there's a 100% he would've sucked up to some ancient politician who personally worked with FDR or Eisenhower.

  3. FDR/Eisenhower

  4. Stalin

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'm two steps from Kollontai, so it can't be that far off.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

It's possible that she never directly met with Stalin, but she definately interacted directly with Molotov.

  5. stalin
[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago

Just guessing that these people probably shook hands: Lt Governor > Senator from state during Lt Gov’s term > direct predecessor in Senate who was in office during FDR’s terms > FDR > Stalin

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 months ago (3 children)

Without identifying info, I had a great-uncle in the Panthers; so probably 5~9 shakes?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's a lot less than 9 shakes since from Huey, it's Huey > Zhou Enlai > Stalin.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Thing is I have no idea how many Bacons from Huey my uncle was; hence the padding room. He wasn't the self-aggrandizing type, and only told those stories maybe once or twice.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

I shook hands with a few old Panthers so I'm going with this answer as well

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago

no more than 5, i would guess. i once shook hands with a career diplomat, a professional hand-shaker of the geopolitical elite if there ever was one. they certainly shook hands with albright, powell, and rice, and any one of them could've shaken hands with someone who shook hands with stalin, so maybe as little as 4.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 months ago
[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Idk but i'd guess fewer than ten.

Also looooooooooool i gaurantee you that the general population is not five kevin bacons away from Stalin. Hahahahahahahahahahahah

Guy in my country's national parliament -> Kissinger -> Mao -> Stalin

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I think I'm three from Putin. So maybe five or six that route.

  1. Some local politician who was in the same room when I gave some presentation

  2. Some Congresswoman

  3. Ancient Congressman named John Dingell https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dingell

  4. Eisenhower (Eisenhower's and Dingell's terms overlap and they've almost certainly would've rubbed shoulders at least once. Plus, it's extraordinarily unlikely Dingell would've skipped all 6 State of the Union addresses Eisenhower would've given)

  5. Stalin

Edit:

I suddenly remember being in the same room as Stephen Hawking one time. If being in the same room without having that person acknowledge your existence counts, it's

  1. Stephen Hawking

  2. Queen Elizabeth II

  3. George Marshall

  4. Stalin

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I think 3: My grandpa, FDR, Stalin.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago

Based grandpa
