That is a good point. You are probably right that it is area based. My degrees were in physics and to my knowledge, there aren’t too many online degrees for it. It’s pretty hard to fake your knowledge in this area. Even if you could, you’ll be found out quickly once starting a job.

[-] UnpopularCrow@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Certainly not untrue. Many schools have gone the way of business. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s only a small percentage that are real degrees these day but it’s definitely lower than it should be.

If you can complete a masters degree in five weeks, it’s a degree mill and not a real degree. The average in-person masters degree requires 30 credit hours with 24 credits being above 500 level (graduate classes). Let’s do the math:

If you take 15 credits per semester (5 classes typically), that would be 15 hours of class time for 12 weeks. For a 3 credit class this would be 3 hours per week of class time. If you condense this down to 5 weeks, that would be 36 hours of class time per week for five weeks.

But remember, this is only half the required credits. So you have to multiply this by 2, leading to 72 hours per week of just class time.

This does NOT include any outside work. Typically, 500 level classes give homework that can take 5-10 hours per week since it is a graduate level class. Let’s assume five hours to be generous.

That would mean for a full semester (15 credit hours at 5 classes) one would be looking at 15 hours of class work per week plus 25 hours of homework/projects per week (5 classes x 5 hours of work per class). For a total of 40 hours per week.

Condensing this down to 5 weeks would multiple this number by 2.4 (5 weeks instead of 12 weeks). And then multiplying it again by 2 since you would have to do both semesters in five weeks. That would be 192 hours of work per week for five weeks. There are 144 hours in a week. These places are degree mills.

Half the school board thinks Keith deserves a third chance (that's right, not his first time making inappropriate comments to a child).

They say only he can decide if he wants to step down. They did vote in favor of censuring him. The rest of the school board members that laughed during the comment and touching of a child faced no repercussion. Some even pretended to be offended during the emergency hearing.

NCAR is not only one of the leaders in climate science, but is an exceptionally important institution for space weather and upper atmosphere modeling. This will be an enormous loss for the scientific community. As someone in the atmospheric and space science community, this decision will have devastating consequences for decades to come.

If you just ignore climate change, it goes away.

I have a question that I’m hoping someone will be able to help with. I plan on moving with my Finnish partner next year to Finland. I should have permanent residency upon arrival. I will already also have a full time position in Finland that will not be associated with my freelancing. However, I am hoping to do work as a freelancer as well. Specifically, I would like to continue bug bounty hunting. How does taxation work? I’m aware that I will have to pay taxes on any income made but my partner is concerned that I may have to pay social security regardless whether I earn additional income or not.

So for example, if I make 10,000 euro over the course of the year doing freelance work, that will be added as a second job but on the same tax card right? And therefore my taxes will increase based on my overall income. Is this correct? And I also assume I would be required to pay social security on the secondary income.

As a second example, if I make 0 euro over the course of the year, I understand that I would need to still declare the zero on my taxes, but would I be responsible for any additional taxes despite no additional income? Would some baseline threshold social security still apply?

Sorry for the likely stupid question, but I want to understand what to expect and not get any surprises during tax season.

Thanks to anyone who is able to help!

Not only is Trump leveling science funding at NASA, like he did with the National Science Foundation, but look closely at the budget. Beginning next year at 800 million and by 2030, 3.5 billion (nearly 20% of its budget), NASA is required to work towards “Commercial Moon and Mars Infrastructure and Transportation”. The ultimate subsidy for the commercial space sector.

They also eliminated STEM engagement program, which provided funding for the next generation of scientists to participate in NASA opportunities. I can’t wait for all this greatness Trump has been preaching to arrive.

I'm curious what everyone thinks about DuckDuckGo's current settings. I have my browser settings set to delete history, cache and cookies on closing. This creates an issue when using duckduckgo as my primary search engine. Their 'default' settings (available right below the searchbar) seem far from privacy focused. AI Chat is on by default and used 'sometimes', as well as 'advertisting' and 'location' settings that are on by default. This requires me to have to change the settings every time I load my browser due to any settings I save being deleted by my browser setup. I don't want to install a duckduckgo extension. How do others deal with this? I know you can 'save anonymously' your settings in the cloud, but I'm not eager to do that.

I will always choose the handicap stall because I like the space between myself and the next stall. It seems like the US bathroom system encourages games of battle shits and I’m not willing to play. I’ve only had one instance where I walked out and a person who actually needed it was waiting. I felt terrible, but it was only once out of hundreds. Does anyone else do this?

I’m honestly blown away that Nestle stopped or reduced advertising. It seems like twitter is exactly the home for such a terrible company.

The wealthy are much better off though. If you looked at the wage increase of the top 1%, if has risen by $800,000 a year (https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/12/09/staggering-new-data-shows-income-top-1-has-grown-100-times-faster-bottom-50-1970) since 1970.

So capitalism is working exactly the way it is supposed to. Exploiting the middle and lower classes for the rich. This is exactly the progress they want.

In a normal world he would be in prison for treason. There is no way he wasn’t aware of what was happening when he was being paid 100,000 a week.

She was on one of the teams that did if I remember correctly. I believe they split up into three teams and developed algorithms independently from one another. What surprised everyone was when they came back, all three teams had more or less the same image. It’s been a while so I may be wrong on some details. But it wasn’t just her is my point.

EDIT: See @AnimePhantasm comment below! My friend called the election board and they confirmed what @AnimePhantasm and @fmstrat commented! This was Virginia reusing last year’s envelopes.

OP I am an absentee voter in Blacksburg just next door. Shine a light on the blacked out part. I am 99% sure this is legit, they just crossed out the witness requirement. I can see the word witness under the sharpie in your picture. Virgina doesnt have to do that witness thing anymore. We did at the last general election, so I am guessing they just reused the same envelopes. You should call and ask your elections office before alerting the news. They are hardworking folks whose jobs are already 100 times harder then they used to be. Stirring up reports of election fraud where it isn't happening makes us just as bad as them.

It is important to note that she chose not to press charges because she was afraid of retaliation from trump’s worshippers. Party of law and order…

I have a 40 lb Samoyed who is a specific type of aggressive chewer. It isn’t so much she destroys any toy I give her because of how hard she chews, but rather she is like a sniper. She finds the weak point in a toy and carefully chews it until the toy is destroyed. I had to stop giving her stuffed toys as she stripes the fur off of them and eats it. While nylon bones work, she will go through them in a few days. And I don’t want to give her toys so hard they will wreck her teeth.

The problem is when I go to pet stores, all the toys labeled for “aggressive chewers”, she finds the weak spot and destroys the toy within one day (sometimes within an hour).

I just recently got a tuffy ring and I was hopeful but she is chewing the ends and eating the fabric off of it.

Does anyone else have a dog like this and if so, what toys have worked for you?

These are just polls, so vote!

Hopefully these trends will inspire people in states that have been consistently red that a flip this election is possible!

While I understand people’s initial reaction to think this is a positive thing, I don’t believe it is. The less free speech and media the Russian people have access to, the more control Putins propaganda machine has.

No need to. Biden can have the 6 corrupt justices killed. He has the immunity and he can pick new justices. If members of the senate refuse to put the new justices on the bench, have them killed too. No rules anymore.

It is time to develop a way to remove nations who clearly don’t have the EU’s best interest at heart. Hungary is long overdue to be bounced from the EU.
