Comrades! I wish you a happiest Halloween!

It is a most special time of year, the time for the frightening and the phantasmic! with ghoulies and ghosties are running amok! Now is when we celebrate all that goes bump in the night!

Please, as we mingle in the megathread this week, lets offer to eachother tidbits to celebrate the season. Are you planning anything big for that special night? Do you have any traditions? Special plans or fun costumes? Got a ghost story to tell us? Let us know! Just don't doxx yourself, now that would be scary.

I for one will be handing out candy to trick or treatlers before attending a theme-appropriate dance party wearing a rather scandalous interpretation of a "bookish lesbian vampire".^[Fangs, glasses, faux leather tights, corset, bdsm harness, a very butch-coded red jacket and black high heel boots.]

Also here is the enby cat familiar if you wanted it (I thought I was clever with this)

A cat wearing witch hat that has yellow, white, and purple stripes, the cat is black, thereby completing the nonbinary pride flag

Boob armor is mocked partially because its actually quite impractical, armor is designed how it is for function and the fancy filigree shit is added as a nod to fancy ass nobles having a lot of money - as a fantasy thing its neat and sometimes what we want is a power fantasy anyway, so fill your boots. I think the criticism of boob armor is overwrought too.

2Bs character design is acknowledged to be "gooner shit" by the series creator. I think its an interesting contrast between the environment and story and these maid outfits, some parts are furthering the story and world building (for example the blinds). She doesnt pick goth maid, its repeated across other androids so its not exactly furthering characterization. Its a weaker case to call out being unable to see women as sex objects in video games - 2B looks like that because thats what the creator was trying to do and seeing her or criticizing her that way isnt "thinly veiled misogyny" its just regular feminist lit theory.

Samus armor is cool though for sure, no notes there. It makes sense in universe, serves the story and characterization, and isnt tailor made to be fetish content.

absolutely, sisters of battle are still rad though

its just regular feminist lit theory

plenty of regular feminist lit theory is extremely sex negative, and there was heaps of regular feminist lit theory that was/is filled with rampant racism and homophobia, so this is not a very convincing argument. 2Bs outfit is obviously overtly "sexy" but i dont think thats a bad thing. having a girl wear a sexy outfit and it just being a normal thing and not causing her to be treated differently or be weighed down in situations is cool, i like it.

obviously, the enforcement of all women being high femme sexy queens is bad, but really the key word there is "enforcement". a character simply existing as a high femme sexy queen is not inherently a bad thing, but that doing anything other than that is punished.

boiling down things to "fetish content" is so silly, basically every piece of art on the planet can be considered fetish content (including metroid). you can just say 2B is the authors overt obvious fetish instead of the authors barely disguised fetish (cowardice). its basically just being prudish sex negative "anything i perceive as sexual is inherently lesser because it is sexual, and that is bad" which is really what this post was about in the first place. and if your feminism involves that your feminism probably wont go anywhere meaningful since sexual liberation and womens/queer/trans/etc rights are so intertwined with eachother

at the end of the day saying that a woman being in revealing clothing is bad for being sexy is just another way of inherently sexualizing womens bodies. the presentation of it may incorporate stuff that may have an undercurrent (or overcurrent) of misogyny in the work but that is still overarching misogyny being a problem. just as how sex work is not inherently bad just because x thing happened that was caused because of misogyny.

and we are actively seeing the consequences of extreme sex negativity now with basically every woman in every piece of media being called "gooner bait" or whatever other derogatory terms for simply existing, which is not going to further womens rights in any way.

also i used 2B as an example because 2Bs design aint even allat, its relatively tame. i see people on the street wearing more revealing outfits regularly

C'est plus ça change... thats part of what feminist lit theory is calling out - the inability to perceive women as people and only as gooner bait, its not sex negative to say "hey 2B is acknowledged to be created to be sexy as part of the male gaze, its not really adding to the world building or her characterization strongly, it doesnt make sense practically or have a patina of making sense (e.g. Quiet needing to be almost naked to breathe). And that makes for a weaker/bad character design." And saying it is sex negative is a little silly. I think we were much closer to a better society with slut walks and take back the night, but the issue comes when women are only allowed to exist in media to serve the male gaze - and this is a term with actual real meaning, its not some airy fairy thing. Its also not exactly transgressive or rebellious to put 2B in a fetish adjacent maid outfit, it was done to serve the male gaze and acknowledged as done so by the creator of the game. It also wouldnt be as much a problem if there were more women in fantasy, sci fi, etc that were just women as they exist. Unsexy, unglamorous, not super fit, not enormous boobs, not in fetish adjacent gear - if it was just one way among many to see women in power fantasy media, Id push back less against saying its merely sex negative to see 2B or boob armor and so on as an actual issue.

Whether feminist lit theory was packed with homophobia or not doesnt mean, hey, lets throw out all of that criticism and analysis in favour of having "gooner bait" in media uncritically (also I doubt youd be surprised to hear Queer Theory has a lot of the same kinds of things to say anyway) - like how is it that the transgressive or rebellious or best thing to do is that we serve the male gaze like this yknow.

The characters dont come out of the aether fully formed, theyre made that way by people. Seemingly only being able to be a high femme sexy queen is a reflection of the attitudes of people who made the character and the society that enforced those attitudes. Why are so many women in this kind of fantasy media only allowed to be a high femme sexy queen? Why is it that in stories and media that serve a large audience thats how they seem to be presented? Because of things like the male gaze. Sexuality in media can be an interesting thing, can serve the story, further characterization, the issue is that it seems to begin and end with what patriarchal cishet norms are on what it means to be a women (apparently, wear as few clothes as possible and sex it up and who cares about the interiority of the mind in the body).

I thought 2B was actually meant to be a critique of the male gaze, since she's an artificial creation meant to be a servant to a human society that no longer exists.

But, looking into it further, I think that was just a generous fan theory. Yoko Taro's other character designs for women are basically the same fanservice shit, so, there probably isn't a good reason for it.
