Oh yea, they definitely weren't subtle, multiple egg references, multiple mentions of this deep secret, its just that you don't see much actually happen with it until late in the show. Going into the finale I wondered and hoped more of Jax's story would be shown and it definitely was and was satisfying to me. I wanted to see behind the curtain, to see Jax, to see the backstory and the ending did a really good job of that.I'm glad someone else feels that way too and I completely agree with that. Going into the episode I thought he was going to stay dead. Also, maybe this is just me and not the fan base as a whole, but I didn't need to see him redeemed? I thought he was a good character from the beginning, I thought they explored his needs very well, he died, I was happy with that. I think a season 2 could have redeemed him and that would have been fine too. Also, this is a side thing, but I don't like how the voice actor voices him post death. I get that they want the voice to sound separate from when he was evil, but it doesn't sound like Caine to me. Maybe part of that is how much I love his voice for most of the show.
