I don't quite know. It's on the one hand pretty obvious these people are complete assholes, but on the other bullying assholes is sort of what makes all this fun, and there's a lot of of other users we reach out to, and some, I assume, are good people.
I think mods should just use the banhammer much more freely, but that's been my wish since federation. Used to be almost any use of bigoted language got you banned, that's not the case anymore. It's pretty obvious we're back in the era of daily wreckers, and that requires more strict moderation. I think I'd like to see that, before I see anything else happen.
Speaking to the essays and sources: I agree, it's tiring. Perhaps we should use some effort as a community to make carrds on the most common stuff - Tianamen, Ukrainian Nazis, genocide in the Donbass, Ukraine losing the war, double genocide theory, that sort of stuff. I've oftentimes just linked to @[email protected]s carrd on xinjiang. It's a pretty good way to figure out if people are acting in good faith or nah.
Edit: I should also say that the most important thing is that Hexbear is an open and inclusive space, and what @[email protected] experienced is not ok. I'm not at all opposed to defederating, I personally would just like to see if there is another solution available beforehand, but I wanna be clear and say that I am not voting for or against anything with this post - I don't really think it's my place to decide to what extent the safe space that Hexbear has grown to be, should be managed.
Speaking as a member of the ND-community I gotta say the ableism these last few days have been tiring, but what really gets to me is users not being banned. I'm used to people using autistic as a slur or -tard as an insult, I'm just not used to these things being handled this leniently. There's a lot of SJW users that do some playground style "oh I didn't actually say the thing, so it doesn't count" which should just be an immediate ban. In general I think there's way too much debate pervetry around. I still wanna see if there is some other solution than defederation, but I understand if our queer comrades feel differently. I don't know if there been a lot of racism - apart from the very clearly racist image in their anti-lemmygrad comm - but like from individual users that is. It's not really for me to say either.
You are completely right. Its not nice to be the only one arguing with a bunch of illiterate morons that react to a well-sourced response with "I'm not reading that propaganda". I don't really know what to do about that. I think it's clear that there is a sentiment on hexbear that "bullying libs" is good and fun, but that only works when you feel you're supported by your comrades. It's also incredibly shitty when you're hit with bigoted language, and nothing happens - that's my main issue so far.
While I don't see a lot of people changing in the moment (I can count on one hand the amount of times users from other instances have stopped to interact with the sources and consider their own position) I think it has an effect long-term, in that I feel I see fewer lemm.ee users with shitty takes now.

I agree in that there is most certainly some communities that are just too shitty. I don't know if I think SJW is one of those yet, that's why I'd like to just see much stricter moderation before we go ahead with defederating. I'd like to see if it makes a difference.
I agree, I think the idea of
half measures was bad. I disagreed with it when it was put in place and I was happy when it was removed. Things such as those requirements do make this more difficult.
Beautifully put, can't really say I disagree all that much with your points. I think in retrospect we went too quick about federating with new communities, and we should have had a chat beforehand - one that could also have been used to create resources such as I suggested. Other resources could be bots like the Whataboutism - bot, but with effortposts or the like.
It seemed as though we had just about reached a stable equilibrium, and then we went and upturned it once again. However this time we were less prepared for the new users we'd been interacting with - they make lemm.ee users seem like they're acting in good faith.
I think however if we close the window now - to use your beautiful metaphor - it will be more difficult to open it again later. I'm not saying I don't think we shouldn't do it, I'm saying I'm unsure and I'd like to see if stricter moderation and some community-sourced resources like your carrd could make a difference.

If instances consistently host DM spam or harassment and don't take their own mod action against the perpetrators, we should block their DMs at a minimum, or defederate if necessary
