I will never understand how people could be this rich and do stupid shit like this.

With all that money, you could go find the love of your life, travel the world with them, pay for all the mental and healthcare you need, be fit and live the rest of your life happily with your soulmate AND still even have the capacity to help others if you so desire.

But instead they do this shit. I hate reality.

We live in a system where, to become that rich, you must be evil.

That's all.

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 30 points 1 month ago

Exactly. This life rewards evil tremendously... I'm so sick of it

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

I know some non-evil rich people. They're memorable because of their scarcity.

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 25 points 1 month ago

Money is just an enabler. They're already abusers, the money just helps them do it with planes and islands instead of trucks and sketchy motels.

You can become a multi-millionaire through honest hard work and responsibility. There are plenty of multi-millionaires who live the lifestyle you describe.

You can't really become a billionaire that way. You become a billionaire by being a greedy, manipulative narcissist, obsessed with wealth and power. That's who you see doing this shit.

The people with all that money are the people so narrowly obsessed with money and/or the power money brings that they have dedicated their whole lives to taking it from others. Effectively that means only sociopaths who enjoy abusing others become that wealthy. People with more meaningful purpose in their lives, or who genuinely care for others, don't become billionaires.

They have OCD, which manifests itself as financial hoarding. If they were hoarding rusty cars on their property, or hundreds of cars, the authorities would step in, and end it.

But if it's money, then they are loaded as successful businesspeople, and strongly encouraged to expand their hoarding behavior.

Confiscate their stolen hoard, and get them help for their mental illnesses.

[-] aesviation@lemmings.world 11 points 1 month ago

They didn't get rich by being good people.

It's another reason why we should always criticize people for how they obtained their wealth. Most of them did it by nefarious means.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago

Pretty sure you described Tom form Myspace, dude got his money and GTFOd.

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 3 points 1 month ago

They got that rich because they already have problems.

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

[-] DontRedditMyLemmy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Did you just make that up? Has a nice ring to it!

[-] Banana@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

Hahaha no I cannot take credit for that one, that's from an old British historian from the late 1800s

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Pretty sure there's also some stoic philosophers who made such observations. Also I'm pretty sure Diogenes said something like that if not in words then in spirit.

[-] Banana@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

I wouldn't be surprised! It's been a fact for as long as people have had power structures!

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Lord Acton. He was a Liberal Party bigwig (the Liberals were the pro-capitalist party, opposing the pro-aristocracy Conservatives-- the modern US definition of liberalism has little to do with their policies). The quote is from 1887.

[-] Banana@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

Yes, and all this being said, him being al liberal doesn't make the quote any less true
