it's this series https://www.thriftbooks.com/series/peoples-trilogy/109285/, by Frank Dikötter, a dutch china-bad-ologist who has previously argued that the chinese should have just accepted massive import of opium into the country because that was less bad than having imperialists not flood the country with drugs

OK but why does it have chibi-lookin' Mao instead of regular Mao on the spine? They have him in Pikachu proportions.
