Toyosatomimi no Miko is a character in the Touhou Project series introduced in its 13th installment, Ten Desires.
Miko was once Prince Shoutoku, a Japanese leader in the 600s known for promoting Buddhism and streamlining the Japanese government. In the Touhou lore, she was visited by Taoist hermit Seiga Kaku, who had heard about Miko’s longing for immortality. Seiga introduced her to Taoism, but she rejected it as a religion unfit for placating an entire country. She was intrigued by its promise of immortality, however, and privately converted to it, advocating for Buddhism to keep Japan stable. After drinking an “immortality elixir” (mercury sulfide), however, she was forced to let go of her body and become a supernatural hermit like Seiga, notably taking on the form of a woman, making her a canonically trans character ().
After convincing a hermit from a rival clan (Mononobe no Futo) to sleep without decaying, Miko followed in suit, waiting for a time where a Taoist Japan would revive her in search of guidance. However, Buddhist monks were able to keep her mausoleum sealed, and the legends surrounding her were slowly brushed off- which led to her transportation into Gensokyo, where the folklore of old is a reality of everyday life.
When she awoke in Gensokyo, it was right after Buddhist monk Byakuren Hijiri opened her own temple, however, leading to a surge of divine spirits across the realm, setting up the events of Ten Desires.
What look like headphones on her are canonically earmuffs- Shoutoku was allegedly able to discern between ten questions asked at once, an ability carried by Miko (although with her enhanced abilities, she can also analyze each person and determine their inner desires (thus the title of the game))- although it means her hearing is highly sensitive and has to be muffled to prevent pain.

Opinions on the Gayhaven adventure, no spoilers
It's more or less what I was afraid of - the author pretty much expected you to have decided to shack up with someone by now, and whoever I chose ends up weirdly overly affectionate in a way that does not match our previous conversations well. I don't have many points with anybody except thirteen friendpoints with Nat, (and like 3 flirt with Farah) so I must have fucked up catastrophically somewhere.I don't think the author was accounting for demi anything, oh well.
slight de-mystification of the Wayland Gayland Chronicles mechanics
So the great thing about these choice of games is, that you can open them via a unpacker program and get at the raw code really easily, which i have done fuck you fight meSo in Book 1 the author used friendship and flirt points, if you've played the game and you're having a moment with one of the vampires there's usually two options for you to be an assertive flirt or a
flirt. There's also atleast one line that will give you a friendship point. The flirt points don't matter honestly, i think they might've locked you in an earlier iteration of the script, but the author took it out. The friendship points get tallied up and later in the series they give you a Best Friend route with one of the vampires.
The thrall beating up scene was one of the ones that actually give you skill points, instead of checking if you have enough, there's a lot of those in Book 1 to allow you to make your character for the rest of the series.
So, the flirt points! They get removed after the first game and in their place in book 2 you get a sliding bar between "Bold" and "Shy" flirting
Also yeah judging by the flirt point tallying, the author assumes you "pick a route" and get smitten by them through the first game, but decided to take that out and just give you a choice instead.
also fun fact, if you have the game on Steam you can play it on your tablet via their site you need to make an account and allow them to check your steam library but, eventually you can be doing gay shit on your gay tablet while in a comfy bed
Gayhaven mechanics!
Waow.... (BASED BASED BASED BASED) I adore the little code quirks and whatever, structural things about this game. I'm always a
instead of a
I'm kinda glad the author ditched the points, felt weird. I like that maybe I can be buddies with Nat though too, actually. I guess I'll end up Shy Flirty though...
Ohhhhh, so I got combat points from that!!! Neat! I like how that lets you spec your character, although I DO NOT appreciate how Wayhaven says I have "low people skills". I would never be socially inept
Okay well I didn't really get smitten because Idk who they are, nobody told me their life story. I wanna know about things, give me your emotional intimacies you bloodsucking girlkissers!!!!!!!!!
Shit no way, is Choice of Games the company that offered their TWINE games as like web apps on iOS back in the day?? I think I played some of their nongay ones, like a fantasy game, fifteen years ago now damn. I already play Gayhaven on my convertible laptop with a touchscreen though, tabletesque
What is your "tablet" exactly anywho?
spoiler
yeah, it's not like you meet someone and just spill everything right away
i- i mean unless you do, then that's also cool
the girlkissers are all just a bit...uhh....aloof? at first. which is also kinda annoying how the game forces the choice on you in the first book tbh. the author probably wanted to make it more replayable (which it is i have 58,8 hours on Steam and that doesnt even count the times I've read through the story from just the raw code
)
i have a Huawei Matepad T10s get it? MATEpad heee.... im a gay disaster
also yeah, the main line of choice of games are a hit and miss, but the hosted games usually have some minted gayness in them
spoiler
Unironically that is how I roll. I mean, "I want to get to know you better" is a cliché for a reason, right? There's also something about me it seems that causes people to spill their guts to me, and I tend to be very open too. But like, even beyond that, by the time Gayhaven demands you choose, I could not give you more than a single sentence description of any vampire. I need more than that, at least...They're very aloof and it bugs me, I desire a partner who is emotionally effusive (like my wife) and open (like my wife) It bugs me, I cannot help wondering if my choice was a mistake because I made it woefully uninformed. It's a big hitch in an interactive fiction that otherwise flows very well. I mean, I do wonder about the branching and may replay it sometime...
Oooh android, that's rad tbh. Playing Choice Of Games on a phone or tablet is the way to go, very based. This is in fact that company, yes.
The fact that there's a queer inclusive line of interactive fic is stellar news, to be honest. When I scrolled the Queer tag on itch, I was hoping for something like this.
went to check the start of book 2 and yeah, unfortunately you're locked in, unless you make a new character. There is an option to remake a character and go through the important choices, but yeah. They reveal more about themselves in book 2 obviously, but the series is a sort of a slow burn for the first 2 to 3. Probably longer if you count Ava. I'm sorry
although this stuff from book 2 was great
Nice it's like Mass Effect saves!!! I actually backed up my save at the Choose Your Waifu crucible just in case, I was worried. I think I can stick it but it doesn't feel like a slow burn, Farah..... blegh
Lol I like this height selector, awesome. Big fan.
fun fact about Farah that she reveals in book 2
she refuses to have sex without dating a bit first, apparently she's been burned too many times by people thinking she's a shallow one-night-standanother fun fact, my original order of playing the routes was: Farah, Nat, Ava, Morgan and then love triangle
after getting through book 2, my order was Morgan, Farah, Nat and Ava who?
This was solidified in book 3
I ain't reading that spoiler :3
Ava goes on the bottom of every list though, very good. That love triangle option... uh can you do a poly thing?
I respect your convictions
The love triangle is dating Nat and having feelings for Ava and she being incredibly confused about why this mortal is able to crack through her icy facade that she spent decades perfecting. I have no idea how it ends up, because it's fucking filled with angst and no comfort. Atleast for now.
also constant decision that make one of them sad. You would hate it.
I take my romances extremely seriously
You should probably be able to kiss them both, I think, even though Ava is a big fucking loser. Also oh no angst~!
Actually one of the things I'm most curious about is, I wonder if the dialogue changes much to suit your gender... is it just a Standard Video Game thing where the only part changed is your gender, or does that actually play out in the vampires' affections????
I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but there's some obvious changes with flavour text like where you blush from, which is honestly kind of a cute difference. If i remember correctly men blush from their ears or the back of their neck? i can't open the files right now to check. While women blush cheekily and i dont actually remember how themperors blush
the bigger changes are when choosing your sexuality because it determines the sex of the vampires (and your possible college ex) if you go the bi/pan route two of the vampires are he/hims and two are she/hers. The core of the character is the same, but they're gender swapped.
let's see if I remember.... they are: Adam/Ava, Farah/Felix, Morgan/Mason and Natalie (Nat)/Nathaniel (Nate)
there is still only one full time patreon funded writer/coder/developer so it's not like the game is going to entirely change, but there are some differences that I've noticed while crawling through the code
The game has a lot of colourful blush-related descriptions for themperors, like heat crawling up your neck, stuff. Less literal blush descriptions, that's a very cute change, but
Uh....
I always held a little disdain for the "everyone is bisexual but only mechanically so we don't have to write more dialogue" thing, but... I think switching the characters' GENDERS, their fucking whole GENDERS on account of the player's sexuality is even more scuffed??? Are they different characters entirely when swapped???
It figures now why you can only be Gay Straight or Bi, there's no flexibility. It's a fucking shame and a missed opportunity to have an entirely nonbinary Unit Bravo, think of the t4t potential. Y'know since nb is functionally "third gender" in this game...
Also, "sex", yeah I see. Still dead curious, I'll post when notable shit happens.
I would never kid about my romance simulator novels
There's some changes, but I havent played with them as guys, for obvious reasons. I did go through a bi route once and it was actually kind of novel to have Adam and Nate being around. A lot of things get contextualized differently with their gender swaps, obviously, but yeah as i said 2018 was still a dark time for all of this
Entirely nonbinary team of vampires would rock tbh
stop making me wish for things that cannot be!
Good, that shit is serious business
This statement gave me a Sensible Chuckle because I'm so familiar with it, hello old friend. "The 90s was still a dark time for [gay cinema]", "The 2000s was still a dark time for [trans fiction]", lmao. It truly doesn't end. I do get the creeping sense that the Wayhaven author might be a dork, and that the En Bee option was slapped on last minute, kind of a hunch... More generally I doubt Wayhaven's alternate setups are worth considering.
I mean, it could be if someone would do something!
she is
but she is learning, and has a large audience of lgbtq people clamoring for all kinds of things, including the option to choose your top and bottom machinery preferences. By book 8 I'm sure we can just straight up be transpeople with neopronouns if we so choose
in the character maker for book 4 demo there's an option to choose if you have tits or not and if you have a dick or not
three whole books of narrative
This is really helpful, thank you!
