What is gender ocd?
No idea whether this is what the video is talking about, but gender/sexuality OCD is a real thing. People who have that as an OCD theme have questioning their gender/sexuality as their obsession, and do various compulsions to try and alleviate the anxiety surrounding that. For example, a trans person might obsess over being secretly cis, a gay person may obsess over being straight, etc etc. It used to be called “HOCD” (homosexuality OCD) because straight people would have obsessions over being gay, but nowadays we recognize that the spectrum of experience in this theme is much wider than that.
Crucial to understand is that this theme usually doesn’t stem from a bigotry. Like, I know that even people without OCD can feel uneasy or uncomfortable when their sense of self is challenged, whether or not the challenge is real or perceived. It can be horrible to have intrusive and ego-dystonic thoughts constantly telling you that you are not who you know yourself to be, even if there’s nothing inherently wrong in being that something else. I used to have this theme — I used to obsess over whether I was secretly cis or secretly straight, and I was terrified that I had somehow managed to construct a huge lie about myself being bi and trans. Nowadays I don’t struggle with this theme anymore (my brain has moved onto other themes.)
Compulsively thinking about gender? Idk what it’s like.
