@Pontifex: In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

@Spectromachina: Pope, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you do not understand? You're not an Ai influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no weight in this debate and you're being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion. how many local models do you run?

Community Note: The Pope is elected by cardinals in a Conclave which gathers in the Sistine Chapel.

By the end of the week, Protestants are going to be running their own image generation model. They will call it Manger Diffusion, and it will be trained on the Veggie Tales DVD box set.

Why would you put that kind of evil on me?

I'm just a little Pope, just a funny little guy who wears a funny little hat and drives around in a funny little car

I have a memory of getting in an argument with some woman on FB 15 years ago who asserted that because she had several hundred people on her friends list that made her opinion carry more weight that has this exact same energy.

    no one elected you

Bigger men with literal armies have contested this over the centuries. Try crossing the alps with ten thousand men before trying to tell the pope what to do.

I guess I missed the election where we made Sam Altman and Dario Amodei the presidents of AI.

Apparently AI execs have been literally lobbying the pope’s advisors to make them consider that AIs might be conscious.

They truly expected the pope to come out and say "Yeah, you know all that shit about God, and how there is only one of them, and how He alone created the universe, and created mankind in His image? We're calling a mulligan on that one. It turns out every dork in a cubicle is actually a God, and you will be reunited with your dearly departed AI agents when you arrive in Heaven."

In all their arrogance they thought that the Catholic Church - a thing which mints theological doctors - has insufficiently considered the ethical ramifications.

This is like the equivalent of me going to NASA to lecture them about paper airplanes.

Tbf I can see why they would expect that. A lot of pastors seem to fucking love AI, we just happen to have the Woke Pope 2.0 in power right now.

I think if they were smarter, they could have manipulated the Vatican the same way they have manipulated secular institutions throughout civil society. Corporations, governments, non-profit organizations, and volunteer projects have largely folded with few exceptions. They assumed the Catholic Church would be equally mesmerized and shortsighted. It is not hard to imagine a world where that is the case either, but it is really funny how poorly this attempt at lobbying has gone.

I think it is an interesting sociological phenomenon. The Catholic Church is obviously by no means a historically progressive institution, but at this moment it appears to have more sovereignty than relatively progressive institutions like constellation of liberal republics which were founded more or less specifically for the purpose of establishing "popular" sovereignty.

Previous pope had some pretty based takes too. Of course they represent, support, and reinforce a horrific institution that should be destroyed, but people contain multitudes and sometimes these shitty people are correct.

it amuses me to think there's something out there with the belief that it's more influential with its little tweet than the pope. this is all the script of a classic early to mid '10s social media flame war vying for subs retweets and virulence, and sure it's exactly the right place for that but he's the pope the revered head of a 2000 year old blood soaked juggernaut of a thing that is the catholic church. who does this twit think is going to be turned around from that by a pissant's "trvth nvke"?

While I disagree with the Pope's argument, it is hilarious that one of the shut up lines here is saying his stance doesn't matter because he isn't an "influencer".

"social media" has made the world a worse place. why should anyone with a screen be able to make a "reply" to a "post" by someone else, who they have no relation to? why is there one forum and why are replies open? how come someone can post about what they had for breakfast, and someone unrelated and unconnected can stumble upon that post and make a comment about seed oils or how the bread looks gross? why can some basic bro reply to a post made by the president of the catholic religion, and why do we have to see it?

actually, i would prefer it if the boss of the hat-focused christian-adjacent religion didn't have an opinion on "AI" at all, and didn't even know what it was. it cheapens his image. but that's a different topic.

the current pope occasionally reads like a poster on here, unfortunately he is kinda inextricable from the evil and corrupt people and organization that is his church, not to mention the many subjects on which their views are bad and wrong.
