@Pontifex: In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

@Spectromachina: Pope, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you do not understand? You're not an Ai influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no weight in this debate and you're being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion. how many local models do you run?

Community Note: The Pope is elected by cardinals in a Conclave which gathers in the Sistine Chapel.

Apparently AI execs have been literally lobbying the pope’s advisors to make them consider that AIs might be conscious.

They truly expected the pope to come out and say "Yeah, you know all that shit about God, and how there is only one of them, and how He alone created the universe, and created mankind in His image? We're calling a mulligan on that one. It turns out every dork in a cubicle is actually a God, and you will be reunited with your dearly departed AI agents when you arrive in Heaven."

In all their arrogance they thought that the Catholic Church - a thing which mints theological doctors - has insufficiently considered the ethical ramifications.

This is like the equivalent of me going to NASA to lecture them about paper airplanes.

Tbf I can see why they would expect that. A lot of pastors seem to fucking love AI, we just happen to have the Woke Pope 2.0 in power right now.

I think if they were smarter, they could have manipulated the Vatican the same way they have manipulated secular institutions throughout civil society. Corporations, governments, non-profit organizations, and volunteer projects have largely folded with few exceptions. They assumed the Catholic Church would be equally mesmerized and shortsighted. It is not hard to imagine a world where that is the case either, but it is really funny how poorly this attempt at lobbying has gone.

I think it is an interesting sociological phenomenon. The Catholic Church is obviously by no means a historically progressive institution, but at this moment it appears to have more sovereignty than relatively progressive institutions like constellation of liberal republics which were founded more or less specifically for the purpose of establishing "popular" sovereignty.
