Tenant rights in Germany are amazing (comparatively) and there is still renter associations (Mieterverein) because landlords are scum sucking parasites who will knowingly do illegal things to tenants.

  • That mold is load-bearing.

Renter’s rights in Australia is way behind, it needs to get up to speed soon because no one can afford houses.

I’ll never again put up with rental agents walking through my home every quarter taking photos

They bothered to paint over the mold?

Same in my neck of the woods.

My sister's apartment has a patch in the ceiling that's literally cardboard boxes from the local hardware store. And literally holes that were cut in the walls for repairs of wires and pipes that were never covered after they were done. And best of all: her bathroom has never had a door on it. The previous tenant (allegedly) tore it off and the landlord has been saying that they'll replace it at the first of the month for 3 years now.

I looked at one apartment years ago where a dog (hopefully it was a dog) had eaten a one-square-foot chunk out of the corner of the bedroom door. The previous tenants had repaired it by nailing a pizza box over the missing corner. The pizza box still had cheese on it. Somehow this seemed worse to me than the two big mounds of dog shit in the kitchen.

The landlord was a wheelchair-bound woman who hadn't been upstairs to look at the apartment since the previous tenants had left. When I told her what was up there, she said if I took the place she would knock off $200 ... from the security deposit.

Straight up, hiding issues with a rental property should be punishable by barring the landlord from owning any property. Y'know, so long as we're not abolishing property ownership, seems fair.

It’s gloss white on the wood and flat white on the walls, but it comes out cream colored from all the layers of cigarette smoke it’s covering.

I bought a house that had been occupied by smokers. One day I painted one of the bedrooms and everything seemed fine and I went home. When I came back the next morning, the top two feet of paint on the walls had flowed down off the walls and onto the floor. Not something I've ever seen happen before. Fortunately I was able to scrub the top with mineral spirits and get the next coat of paint to stick.

Come on, you gotta at least use some primer first. Kilz that shit so you seal in all the mold. Then it's forced to become structural, and in a few years you can use your well trained mold to grow extensions to your units!

I think most western countries could say that about each other.

Yes, there are shitty landlords in Australia. However, I've never encountered mould or a landlord that wouldn't make appropriate repairs.

I'm sure there are shitty landlords in Canada, and every other country.

I've had to move a lot over the years. Lived in large and small cities in 4 provinces.

I can say with great certainty that this rental scenario (depicted in OP) is very common in any conservative managed or low income areas. Tends to not be common in nicer neighbourhoods.

Friend of mine once lived in a rental house that had black mold with his wife and kid. The landlord had done precisely jack shit for those three years. They kept getting lung conditions and stuff, and my friend tried to clean it himself, but it always came back.

Then one day his wife had a series of strokes during a particularly intense bout of the chronic lung shit they all got when the weather was wet.

She's blind now. Suffered brain damage. Different personality, loss of cognitive ability, an irate shell of her former self. This woman who once had a 200 grand job in the Commonwealth public service. The marriage did not survive.

My friend is now looking after his kid mostly as a single dad in a smaller but mold-free apartment in a cheaper suburb.

The Canberra rental market is insane, and that landlord deserves arson.

    It's definitely the opposite.

When Australians say times are tough, it's true, but they're usually unaware of how much tougher it is for everyone else.

There is a reason for the increasing uptick of North Americans moving to Australia and not looking back.

Friendly Jordies recently "reviewed" some Canadian cities and basically summed it up well. He couldn't believe how much damage the political choices had done to the nation in the past 15 years.
