This headline has a real "...due to The Incident™, of course" vibe to it, and I both do and don't want to know what The Incident™ was.

I'm so glad the newer generation of anime are turning their back on perv shit. There will still be the occasional anime where the "10yo girl is a 1000 yo dragon so it's totally okay" BS. But a lot of modern more popular anime is toning that shit down.

And a part of it makes me believe because the other countries are doing anime (Korea/China) and gaining more international recognition.

I'm so ready for the death of the "man or boy does sexual harassment as core feature of their character, its super funny"

[-] tomkatt@lemmy.world 13 points 17 hours ago

Same, but for me it's the "Useless loser gets isekai'd to a fantasy world where he's somehow not a deadbeat loser and gains a harem" trope.

[-] Quadrexium@sopuli.xyz 9 points 17 hours ago

also "useless loser goes back in time, gets a cheat ability, and gets a harem while getting revenge/dominating the competition"

The thing is there's always been anime that wasn't creepy.

Like slavery: no, it wasn't okay then either. People did great work without it.

[-] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Yea! My family didn't have slaves! My family were poor! Do you have any idea how much a slave cost back then?

There will still be the occasional anime where the “10yo girl is a 1000 yo dragon so it’s totally okay” BS.

I mean, people like voyager and the main character pairing is between Jar Jar Binks and his "3 year old, but it's cool man, their species only live to be 7 and the actress is of age" girlfriend.

I love startrek and this is a completely valid description of Nelix and Kess

This is good news, and maybe there can be more quality anime and manga in the future.

Still very disturbing that this wasn’t their policy already though…

I’ve been an anime fan since the 1980s, but have fallen off hard since 2012 or so. There are so few good series these days and a lot of it just seems like embarrassing juvenile pervy crap nowadays. There’s not much to like about it

[-] zikzak025@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

Mushoku Tensei is still the most popular anime series airing at the moment, so I wouldn't say that is the case. It feels more like the line is moving in the other direction, to be honest.

Seriously?? So, I might be able to startup anime again? I had to stop. It grossed tf out.

[-] EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app 13 points 17 hours ago

Earlier on reddit I ran across a bunch of people insisting this is a terrible policy and I'm just feeling really grateful that they're not my only option anymore

[-] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 4 points 14 hours ago

People complain about Lemmy lacking niche communities but then you visit Reddit and there's six subreddits about underage anime girl armpits with 10,000 subscribers and every comment is like "great armpits" and "my waifu"

Sooooooooo they are hiring minor human rights violators?

…how minor are we talking here? I've probably violated some human rights, but only a little. ;-)

[-] Abyssian@lemmy.world 3 points 14 hours ago

Tricky wording from them. They're trying to throw you off track thinking about minor human rights violators, but the truth is they're still planning to hire minor sex offenders.

Manga with sexualized characters who are very clearly intended to look like children but "don't count" because they're really 2,000 year old dragon god immortal princess faeries wink, wink are some of the best selling, and they don't want to lose their edge in the market by turning down the potential employees most passionate about drawing them.

[-] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 23 points 21 hours ago

How many mangaka support that Kenshin creator after they found CP on him. He literally had so much they thought he produced it.

And his coworkers/former coworkers are like "Ah yeah everybody makes mistakes"

[-] scytale@piefed.zip 4 points 17 hours ago

Yeah that was like Polanski all over again. Disappointing to see all those great authors continuing to support him.

Man says he won't kick puppies or burn down orphanages.

[-] PRIMEcavitationfetishist@quokk.au 4 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Man says he will not buy more accelerant or new shoes for the purposes of burning down orphanages and kicking puppies. No word on current stocks, non-specialty shoes, or fertilizer. Dude's gotta farm sometimes yk?

[-] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 13 points 21 hours ago
[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago

...as a policy. If it happens now, he has an excuse.

[-] kbal@fedia.io 14 points 21 hours ago

If you're looking to hire some new Human Rights Violators and Sex Offenders, it's a starting to look like a buyer's market out there.

[-] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 21 hours ago

Well, I guess my application is going to be rejected then.

[-] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago

Me: Not an anime fan.

Me reading this headline: "I guess that's a good thing to START doing.....kinda weird that wasn't the default for decades now......

Then I remembered how there's always the trope of a little 5 year old girl, who's just doing little kid things, but then OH NO! LETS SEXUALIZE HER, AND CLAIM SHE'S AN ANCIENT SPIRIT AND IS ACTUALLY 100 YEARS OLD!!!

And I'm just like "Yeaaahhhhh, no. If I'm not going to get aroused by humans dressing up in furry costumes because it's too close to the idea of fucking an animal, then I'm also not going to be ok with sexualizing the image of a child, regardless of how old her character is. It's still very much presenting the image of a child, and sexualizing that image.

So that brought me down a wide range of reactions I didn't know I had. From indifference, all the way to outrage, all from a media form that I haven't thought about in 20 years. So now I'm just mad that this wasn't always the case. Like, yeah, it's a good step in the right direction in 2026, but it's kinda like in 1945 Germany saying "Hey, we're not going to be nazis anymore...."

Great! Where was this mentality all along?

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 8 points 19 hours ago

If I'm not going to get aroused by humans dressing up in furry costumes because it's too close to the idea of fucking an animal

I mean that kinda undermines your argument, because there are people who are aroused by humans dressing up in furry costumes without wanting to fuck animals.
