I'm just saying nobody ever wrote a song called "Fuck the Fisher Officer..."

[-] Rubanski@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 7 hours ago
[-] sukhmel@programming.dev 2 points 6 hours ago

Same with Fishfighter, sounds much closer to the truth, and I can't stop imagining a person wrestling with a large tuna or catfish in a shallow water

[-] BaraCoded@literature.cafe 4 points 6 hours ago

Streetman = Streetfighter

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 32 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

They can't all be the same class tho.

Firefighter

Policeranger

Mailmage

Fisherbard

And let's assign their race, too.

Human Firefighter

Elf Policeranger

Gnome Mailmage

Half-Orc Fisherbard

[-] _stranger_@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Horcfard, the half orc Fisher bard.

[-] boomlandjenkins@lemmy.world 13 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Why do you have to bring race into it?!

/s

[-] black0ut@pawb.social 7 points 5 hours ago

So the policeranger has an excuse to shoot the rest of them

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 6 points 8 hours ago

So the DM knows what bonuses they have. 😌

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago

eh, fishers are more rangers than police.

[-] kunaltyagi@programming.dev 3 points 6 hours ago

Some lotta police is more orc (organized, following orders, and if you see a group of them, just turn back)

[-] GarboDog@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

Firefighter, pig, courier, fisher

[-] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

I know this is a joke but I will be pendantic and say there is already a gender neutral word for fisherman, which is fishmonger.

[-] Godric@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

It's sad, the few things one can monger.

War, fish, rumors, cheese, fear, and whores, not much else to be a mongerer-of :(

[-] Rusty@lemmy.ca 6 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Fisherman - Fishmonger

Mailman - Mailmonger

Policeman - Policemonger

Fireman - Firemonger

[-] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

I thought a fishmonger was someone who sells fish at market, not the person who catches them.

[-] Pipster@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 6 hours ago

Is it pedantry if it isn't true though? Or am I being woooooshed?

[-] ThirdConsul@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 hours ago

Fishfighter, not fisherfighter. No idea why, just sounds better.

Otherwise no notes

[-] CombatWombat@feddit.online 54 points 16 hours ago

This is the most boring d&d party. How about:

  • firefighter
  • policerogue
  • mailcleric
  • fisherranger
[-] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Quick! Mailcleric cast spare the...package! This one's taken a beating!

[-] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 22 points 16 hours ago

"I cast Detect Dead... Letter."

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

“This letter is simply addressed to “Johnny” in red crayon.”

casts deduce address

“10225 Arcadia Drive.”

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 13 hours ago
[-] Malgas@beehaw.org 6 points 13 hours ago

fisherranger

Favored enemy: bass.

[-] Beehaw_Girl@beehaw.org 20 points 16 hours ago

Stewardess = Airline Passenger Fighter

[-] FiskFisk33@startrek.website 7 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

There are no such thing as fellow passengers, only foe passengers.

[-] StillAlive@piefed.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Nah.

Airline Passenger Paladin.

They cast 'banish' and you're out of the plane.

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 24 points 17 hours ago

If somebody told me this was how German worked I would believe it so I wonder if the reverse is true

[-] affenlehrer@feddit.org 11 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

This does not work in German because fighter (Kämpfer) is gendered as male. There's is female version of it though (Kämpferin). We have Feuerwehrmann and Feuerwehrfrau. Correct gendering in German is (I say that as an older a male) a bit complicated and makes the sentences usually mich longer or sound weird.

There was a joke solution to this that I really liked: add a "y" to the end or all gendered words: Feuerwehry, Frisöry, Mitarbeity, Erziehery, Arzty etc.

Monster or Ungeheuer would work too. Feuerwehrmonster.

[-] DmMacniel@feddit.org 9 points 14 hours ago

Degendering ala Phettberg may have started as a humours way toward gender neutral language, but it evolved IMHO into a serious way next to *, :, Innen.

In frontend development, it's pretty common to use German to stress test UIs, as it's a commonly used language with a lot of long words. It reveals all sorts of UI issues - text that doesn't wrap properly, buttons that are pushed off the screen, etc.

I don't know German, but I do like the idea of using compound nouns rather than inventing new words.

It's also common to test UIs with Arabic, to test handling of right-to-left languages. At work we have a "fake RTL" language that's English but rendered RTL. It's interesting because everything is flipped - for example, a left-hand sidebar is instead on the right side in RTL languages. Company logo is at top right instead of top left.
