Now do the other $83 million he owes her for defamation.

[-] null@piefed.nullspace.lol 50 points 1 day ago

And remember, the Judge said that this was rape in all but the letter of the law.

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 35 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And his first wife claimed in the divorce proceedings that he raped her

[-] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

Is that the one he killed and buried on his golf course?

Wut

Edit: Wikipedia says:

On July 14, 2022, Ivana died at age 73 of blunt impact injuries to the torso after falling down steep spiraling stairs[89] at her home on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.[90][91] Her ex-husband, Donald Trump, and their three children, along with a number of politicians and celebrities, posted condolences on social media.[92][69] Her funeral was held on July 20 at the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer, a Catholic church near her home.[93] Ivana is buried at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey.[94]

Wasn't that the case that made raping a spouse a crime in the eyes of the law?

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

No, it was started on a state by state basis with Nebraska and South Dakota being the first states to fully outlaw in 1975.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marital_rape_in_the_United_States

It wasn't until 1993 until is was considered rape in all the states. Still to this day though marital rape is treated differently in some states.

[-] justaman123@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

Oh, but wasn't that the last case in 1993? There's some connection there

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

You could be right, but without more to go on I couldn't find anything.

In 1993 the last two states to make it illegal was Oklahoma and North Carolina.

Here is a discussion of a landmark case in Oregon.

One thing about AI search I've noticed is that it's a lot harder to find inconvenient information on things like this.

The closest thing I could find was that she walked back the claim and endorsed him for president. I wonder if this is related to how she fell down the stairs and got buried on the back 9

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Oh yes, I knew about his spousal rape way back in 2000 when it was brought up in an article I read. My wife remembers him on a show like the lifestyles of the rich and famous where Trump explains that he records everything on his property and uses the recordings to influence people. Basically admitting he was a black mailer.

He was known as a racist, a thief, a liar and a conman before he was reincarnated on The Apprentice which is a yet another very interesting story. Imagine my horror when he ran for Presidency a second time in 2016. But I digress.

Ivana was very open about the rape and there is no doubt it happened. She was also adamant that it should not affect his ability to do business. Apparently she was paid well to keep her mouth shut and even repent what she said about the rape. He eventually buried her on a golf course for a tax break after a fall from the stairs.

[-] justaman123@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

Yeah I think she tried to get another payday and got pushed down the stairs instead

[-] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 48 points 1 day ago

Good for her, but 5.62 million is too small. The EU has a much better track record of holding rich entities to account based on percentages of their wealth instead of set amounts. When you have a set amount fee it's only a problem for the poor.

Yes, that means a speeding ticket for Jeff Bezos should cost him $525,000,000, which is the equivalent between what he earned in 2023 (70 billion) multiplied by the current fee of about 300 on the average person's yearly income.

[-] Hapankaali@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago

The vast majority of EU countries don't have income-dependent traffic fines. The EU itself can only fine corporations.

In fact, the kind of settlement reached in this case would be impossible in many EU jurisdictions, many of whom have no possibility for punitive damages. So E. Jean Carroll would only have been able to recuperate her actual, proven damages in those systems, and might have been able to force Trump to publish a rectification, but not much more.

On the other hand, a criminal conviction for rape would have been far more likely in many of these systems, if not in this case, then likely in others. For example, it is hard to imagine no investigation being started when someone claims under oath they were raped, as did happen in the US legal system.

Doesn't she still have another eighty-one million dollar payday coming?

look, just because dumpy has siphoned off billions from the treasury, doesn't mean he has $81M to spare!

[-] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 17 points 1 day ago

Or rather, her law firm received it

[-] kibblebits@quokk.au 9 points 1 day ago

The law firm probably took a cut on a case like this, unless you know otherwise?

[-] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 6 points 1 day ago
[-] kibblebits@quokk.au 17 points 1 day ago

They probably took 30%, and nothing up front, which is pretty common.

[-] florencia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

Especially when you're fighting such a high level figure putting his ass on all the scales

[-] Telodzrum@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago

Weird anti-labor comment to see on Lemmy.

[-] turdburglar@piefed.social 5 points 21 hours ago

sorry, how is that anti-labor?

[-] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 7 points 1 day ago

No, just clarifying the headline; it’s in the article.

[-] foggy@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Oh good God frame that check and sell it to the New York center for women's history after she deposits it. They'll take good care of it.

[-] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

What exactly made him hand over the money? He's been so obstinate about everything and able to avoid accountability,it's almost shocking he finally handed it over. What exactly made Donald Trump finally comply with a law? Seems like a rather important thing to find out if you oppose him.

[-] PwnTra1n@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

In order to appeal he had to put the money he owed her up front. They just released the money to her

[-] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

So he'll pay for the chance to fuck someone over, rather than fighting it?

[-] PwnTra1n@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

He already lost the case 3 years ago. He didn’t want to pay so he wanted to appeal and the courts needed the settlement money set aside for whatever reason. They didnt overturn the ruling so the money was awarded. He didn’t release the money to her the courts did and you can bet he’s still out there defaming her and setting himself up for more lawsuits from her for that.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 11 hours ago

There are so many other people he has defamed, they could put together a class-action lawsuit against him.

[-] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

So we need to force the money into the hands of a third party before he gets the chance to fuck them over.

[-] PwnTra1n@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Pretty much they made him put the money where his mouth was and there was no overturn
