These LLMs are actually going to grind the US government into dust and I'm forced to say...critical support?

I was testing that a change worked and that the DB was storing more than 60 characters. The user told me to run it through chatgpt to get a word count. Before he had finished saying it i had already pasted it into notepad++. I could have also used ms word, or notepad, or any number of word processors. I wish I were dumber...

I have a coworker who fell deep into the AI world recently and it really shows in his code. Today he was bragging about using all of his chat gpt access for the day. He would absolutely do something like this.

Even my boss, who was excited at first about us starting to use AI, has gotten sick of it and told us to cut back on AI use. Not to save money, to prevent bugs and so we don't have to hear him fucking talk about how amazing chat gpt is.

Is there a correlation between being a republican and believing in aliens? not just a 'sure, they probably exist' but like, absurd levels of belief? Anecdotally I know a few republicans who are very convinced in their existence to a fault, and will attempt to convince anyone who will listen regardless of their political stance.

I mean, they might exist. They also might not. I don't think I care because I'm not sure if it matters. Aliens existing won't help me get health insurance. Aliens existing won't get me better working conditions. I don't find any value in having an opinion on the subject because it doesn't matter to me.

Aliens, in the sense of life not from/on earth, is pretty much certain to exist. There are an unfathomable amount of planets out there, and life arose here on earth pretty much as soon as the conditions were favourable, considered on a geological time scale. That's been my opinion for most of my adult life, and getting a biology degree has only reinforced it. I find it hard to believe that nowhere in this staggeringly enormous universe were the conditions right again. What isn't hard to believe is that humanity will never encounter alien life due to distance/advancement.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago

there's believing in aliens and there's believing in aliens

[-] miz@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago

aliens exist but we'll never meet them

[-] Blakey@hexbear.net 2 points 4 days ago

Aliens exist but they're all slime;)

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 13 points 5 days ago

Never really done a deep dive into this, but just going off vibes, I think a lot of them believe in aliens because it feeds into larger conspiracies about the world which are comfortable to believe?

[-] AFineWayToDie@hexbear.net 14 points 5 days ago

It takes more imagination to perceive societal issues as arising from long-standing systemic forces and class struggle, than blood-drinking space reptiles.

I think it is often the case that the further right someone is in their worldview, the more willing they are to ignore cognitive dissonance - in other words, they're more readily able to believe in a thing because it's what they want to be true rather than what an honest investigation of the world around them would actually show them is true. And most people who believe in aliens actually coming here and doing shit on Earth, really do want to believe that is happening, even if it doesn't align with other parts of their worldview. Though often their aliens beliefs are cultivated in a way that helps reinforce other parts of their worldview, such as the conspiratorial stuff like what SorosFootSoldier said. Big gubmint covering up the truth and so on.

So I do think their republicanism or rather their reactionary politics in general partly comes from the same basic trait that makes them so eager to believe in aliens. Obviously it's not universally true since we have plenty of lefties who believe aliens are here on earth, and plenty of fashy skeptics, but the correlation you are asking about is real and that would be my guess as to why.

[-] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago

They think aliens are demons.

[-] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 11 points 5 days ago

Well, demons are from Mars

[-] haxboar@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago

I was literally told this in Sunday School

wtf

[-] FloridaBoi@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

Anecdotally I think it correlates positively with religious belief too, at least with Christians.

[-] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

It's definitely some sort of surrogate religion thing goin' on. The last real religion in imperial core is Musk-esque electronic technology worship: the belief that one's proximity and acquiring of specifically-electronic products and services is the road to personal satisfaction and humanity's progress. Belief in aliens is like a backup belief they have about life in the universe and meaning I guess. It also fits into their "organized government always lies, but I'm too smart for that" thought paradigm.

The only reason i care is because the publicly available information has government officials claiming existence and knowledge of shit that literally defies the laws of physics and if it were based on literally anything real it's an actual crime against humanity just to keep the alleged recovered materials and their properties secret simply based on the near term technological breakthroughs they'd allow and how much they'd benefit everybody

but who the fuck knows how much of any of this is real or significant especially when so much of it is just straight up stupid, like Tom Delonge from Blink 182 being a major reason for the disclosure of those FLIR videos from ten years ago

I'm kinda nerdy about this stuff. It is genuinely extremely difficult to know what is bullshit and what isn't. BUT I can personally say I saw something with my own eyes once that I simply cannot explain through human activity. So I do think something is going on. I just try to think about it from a dialectical materialist point of view and not trust anything some government or ex-govt removedsays. Maybe I'll do an effort post on Aliens one day.

I think most conspiracy trends in the US have been heavily infiltrated and psyoped, including the aliens one. Pretty sure I got that from Aberration in the Heartland of the Real but idk

You just don't realize that what we really need is the Galactic Confederation to launch an intervention to bring gay space communism to humanity.

LAUNCH THE GLORBGLOPS GALACTIC GENERAL SECRETARY WABABBOO SULIKLIN!
