Ok, but I don't want to grant strange web pages access to my camera, so they can fuck right off.

[-] tomiant@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago

Don't worry, billions won't mind, and if you don't follow suit then no internet for you.

They know exactly what they are doing.

They don't need your consent as an individual, they're on a take it or leave it basis because they know the vast majority is too uninformed or unprincipled to care.

And then you'll be in the minute fraction that can't access shit and basically cut off from being online.

My pc doesnt have a webcam you freaks.

[-] tomiant@piefed.social 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

No worries. Just send a photo of your passport, a bank statement proving your residence, and your telephone number that is connected to your personal identity by law (which it is in almost every country now).

We are not fighting hard enough.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 5 points 1 week ago

They won't accept that. They want RTV of those docs, including biometrics of your face.

[-] atro_city@fedia.io 41 points 1 week ago

I've seen hCaptcha and other things just let people solve things by dragging stuff with the mouse. I bet those are much more reliable at detecting real people without having to resort to such deep invasion of privacy. Fuck Goofle.

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 4 points 1 week ago

But that doesn't let them link your browser activity on your computer to your phone, and tben sell your browsing habits and biometrics data

[-] FishFace@piefed.social 3 points 1 week ago

That method is mentioned in the article.

[-] Elgenzay@lemmy.ml 36 points 1 week ago

"For users with accessibility needs who cannot use hand gestures to complete the challenge, reCAPTCHA continues to provide visual and audio challenges, and develop more accessible and secure alternatives"

So what's the point?

[-] kambusha@sh.itjust.works 24 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)
[-] trevor@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 week ago

They also disable the "accessible" captchas on a whim when they feel like it, so this is also a lie.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Are you new? That option will eventually go away. Especially for people who cannot confirm that they need it.

Instead of coming up with a better way to do all this, they'll spend that time and money coming up with a way to confirm that people are actually blind and actually need the alternative method.

[-] EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago

Just go ahead and give us access to your medical records to confirm. We promise to use this information in a completely normal way, and will certainly not abuse it at all. We can be trusted with your data.

Boiling the frog degree by degree

[-] TheDeadInternet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Speed/convenience.

It's like phones people use their thumb or face to unlock even though that's objectively less secure than a good password.

I feel like this is a slow boil eventually they will make it mandatory that you need to have your fave scanned.

It's worth mentioning by 2027 all new vehicles have to have facial scanners installed and they watch you 247.

Too bad. You're welcome back to partake in The Internet once you do!

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 34 points 1 week ago

I suspect a lot of people will just decide they don't want to use your website that badly.

[-] ashley_z@lemmy.zip 33 points 1 week ago

I don't have a web cam, so I guess I don't need your website that badly

[-] errer@lemmy.world 30 points 1 week ago

The videos are not associated with a particular user and are deleted after they are verified.

Bull. Shit.

[-] TeddE@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

I'm willing to believe they toss out the video - after they process it and extract all the positioning and timing information. Toss the bulky vid and keep the metadata.

In fact - similar to how a police officer might erase a recording so the most reliable testimony is their thoughts‡ - once the original video is lost, the metadata becomes the only source of truth.

(At ~40 minute mark, the officer describes how he transcribes then erases tape recordings)

Man the internet is so fucked now.

Honestly I find myself going more and more old school. Thrift stores, Craigslist, garage sales since the dominant platform here requires a 360 degree set of pictures of your head for verification just to create an account.

More and more I get stonewalled by bullshit like this and I just close the tab in frustration and go elsewhere.

Same with news sites. Scroll down an inch and they paywall you. Well, I already have a shirt attention span. Tab closed.

I hope its not a few that are like me but that a majority will soon start behaving this way.

Big tech is so bad now. All about data collection and monitoring you while making your experience of their product worse over time. Fuck that.

What's worse is those fucking people that throw up the "I have nothing to hide" argument.

You should. You deserve privacy. Everyone who wants your information just wants to use it to manipulate you. Wake up.

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 3 points 1 week ago

Maybe it's a sign that it's time to go outside and touch grass.

Internet has peaked and is now in decline. Glad I got to experience its golden age.

[-] LordCrom@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

At least we got the OG black vault, hamsterdance, irc, and a full set of fan pages for everything out there

I miss the late 90s

Cool. Now please tell me how to fix this:

I need a job. I desperately need a job. I have very little time left until I'll have to leave the country I called home for 5 years because I can't get a job.

Suddenly all job sites start talking about "suspicious behavior on my account" and block it. But no worries, all I have to do is send them a picture of my passport, videos of my face and my first born, and I'm in business baby!

So what the fuck a.m I supposed to do?

I mean, of course you are completely right, and I too love thrifting and hard sales and and... I still need a job

How the fuck is any of this legal? Why do our politicians sell themselves to the highest bidder to allow these creeps to take everything from us?

No they won't, I don't have a camera attached.

[-] CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

“For users with accessibility needs who cannot use hand gestures to complete the challenge, reCAPTCHA continues to provide visual and audio challenges, and develop more accessible and secure alternatives,” Google said.

That was the last paragraph of the article you didn't read. I don't have a camera either, and use a bot to bypass captchas.

[-] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

You're assuming I didn't read the article. Yes, I'm aware of the workaround, I'm saying I won't be using this validation method as I don't have a webcam on my computer.

[-] TheDeadInternet@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

They will use this for ads as well ( eventually) you will have to watch them to use any of their services unless you pay.

[-] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

PLEASE DRINK VERIFICATION CAN!

It's finally going to be real :D but also :(

[-] TheDeadInternet@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Please jump for joy.

Yeah I'm done with the Internet ( main sites) if we get to that point.

[-] neclimdul@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Fires up obs. Loads new scene. Attaches image.

Share virtual camera.

[-] spittingimage@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

The videos are not associated with a particular user and are deleted after they are verified.

Fool me 17,695 times, shame on me.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

Meanwhile I get all sorts of password reset and MFA calls/texts/emails/notifications from people trying to break into my account in countries that I have never been to and are nowhere near me.

Cool cool

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 6 points 1 week ago

The future has no personal computers in it. It has rental signup shit. Keep your sign up too assholes!

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 5 points 1 week ago

My computer doesn't have a camera

[-] Curious_Canid@piefed.ca 5 points 1 week ago

We have reached the point where companies are willing to lose a small number of privacy-oriented users in exchange for detailed data about the rest. I am already running into sites that are not fully functional from a privacy-oriented browser. (For instance, I can no longer see prices or make pledges on Kickstarter when using LibreWolf.) That will get worse, but I also expect some sites to break with Google and Microsoft so they can continue to serve (and make money from) the larger group. It will be interesting to see how it settles out.

[-] Curious_Canid@piefed.ca 3 points 1 week ago

In the interest of fairness, I have to post an update. Kickstarter had not done anything about the problem for a while, so I stopped using it. I just discovered today that they actually did fix it.

[-] Kintarian@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I’m gonna wave something but it aint gonna be my finger

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Omegle figured this out years ago.

Virtual Camera -> video of a wave.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

How long until it's bypassed by gifs/3D models and a virtual webcam?
