my take:

the guy is pretty clearly anti-crank science & anti-woo, in seeing the other example cartoon.

the trap was drawn wrong (not set, but sprung), because people like this hire exterminators or put out anti-coag bait traps.

the message is that "vaccine/public health 'skepticism' is pulling people into a trap that will kill them (deadly virus outbreak)."

My official guess is this was LLM-generated and that's why it has a bunch of contextual links to the news happenings but doesn't actually make any sense, including being an unset trap.

His other stuff is straight forward.

comic about raw milk, the characters wish there was a way to make it safe to consume, the milk carton says now with ecoli

It's by a guy named Michael Ramirez and it's in his usual style. I've always assumed he makes them by hand and scans them into his computer. But that's only my assumption. His cartoons could be all digital for all I know.

Trap disarmed, free cheese 🐭

Honestly not even sure if this is by accident or on purpose or what it's supposed to mean. Scepticism is free bait?

Holy fucking shit the wapo website is busted.

[-] LaughingLion@hexbear.net 14 points 1 day ago

[-] soybeanis@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago

I'm confused. The trap hasn't been set?

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

The thread has tons of comments about the trap and that fact too.

[-] soybeanis@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

yeah, sorry I commented before I scrolled through lol

So I think it could mean one of two things.

  1. If it is actually meant to be a non-functional mousetrap, then skepticism of "Hantavirus" is perfectly justified and is just free cheese. I think they're saying that it is good to be skeptical of these things, like Covid, because...they are lying about it because reasons.

On the other hand, it's likely they just didn't know how to draw a set mouse trap, and a lack of clear labels is probably a sign that this is the case. I've never seen a right wing cartoon that respects their audience's intelligence and ability to pick up subtlety.

If so, point 2. It is probably meant to represent how skepticism is bait for the hantavirus "trap", I would guess because they think that any "free thinker" who wants the freedom to choke to death as their lungs fill up with fluid is "too dangerous" and so the insidious Them must be planning to...do something to anyone expressing skepticism of this virus, probably the usual right wing fears of being treated the way they treat others.

I'll give it a shot:

pronouns "hantavirus is a weapon meant to catch those of us who were correctly skeptical of the COVID hoax!"

how did I do?

[-] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I actually read it as the opposite: "skepticism" in the case of covid was a trap that got a bunch of people killed. I don't think they mean it that way but if you read it like that it is very funny.

in other words, weaponized skepticism was the bate and the virus is the kill mechanism.

[-] DerEwigeAtheist@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago

Off topic, bus I've had mice disarm traps like that before(found the disarmed trap in the morning, with the bait gone, or, the still armed trap, with the bait also gone). They can be really smart. Shame they nibble on my food and transmit infections.

Ramirez having the weird politics of an OG conservative Bush 1 kinda guy makes me wonder what he means by this.

I seriously thought he was dead. The last time I remember seeing one of his cartoons the Obungler was running for reelection

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago

If it was drawn correctly as a working trap - I still don't get it. Skepticism of what?

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

Scepticism is a whole mindset, the what is not central.

[-] Krem@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago

so the infected mouse is attracted by scepticism?

wait, no, hantavirus is the trap? so, if you try to eat the scepticism, you will be killed by the virus, but if you don't eat scepticism, you'll just avoid the trap? uhhh so "doing your own research" will kill you? is this what it's saying?

[-] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

It means that even if the virus was meant to kill skeptical people the government would fuck it up so just eat the free cheese

[-] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

I wonder how long it took him to think up this one

One? Perhaps even two minutes?

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

Hantavirus... Rats... Mice... Mice trap!... I mean mouse trap!... I'm a genius!

---

Every time I see a mouse trap cartoon - I have the same thought. Again? It's your job to be creative!

Let's really think about this folks:

What is a mousetrap? It's a mechanical device used to kill a pest living inside a home or place of business. Because its mechanical, that means its constructed, and not natural. It's a tool, a product of human engineering. If this was a message about the dangers of natural pathogens, why use a human made device? Why not a snake or a badger or a grizzly bear or some other alpha predator? I think the artist knows what we all know about this virus. It's plain to see.

What is, cheese? A tasty treat, one you can enjoy in all kinds of ways. You can eat it with crackers, or burgers or just by itself. There is no wrong way to enjoy cheese. It's also great to share with family, friends, and coworkers. It's a completely natural product, one discovered by accident, meaning given the right conditions it forms naturally in the wild. Doctors however, will tell you, too much cheese is bad for you, that you shouldn't have too much cheese. They'll say "Bob, how much cheese did you say you eat again? You have to stop eating so much cheese!" But we know that cheese can be part of a healthy diet, offering high-quality protein, calcium, and nutrients like vitamin b12 that support bone health and satiety. You can never have too much of a good thing I always say.

The trap, presented here, is clearly a false flag. If you know anything about traps, you can tell right away that this is a trap that only looks threatening. Its designed that way, with intention. Some might say "Bob don't eat that cheese! It's going to kill you!" But don't let them fool you! If you do your own research you can spot the false traps and allow you to enjoy that delicious cheese! I've been "eating" this "cheese" for over 40 years and never once have I ever had a medical issue that I'm aware of. My homeopathologist says I have the heart of a horse! Which, since the transplant I had in the sewers of the Philippines many years ago, is a true statement.

Comrades, listen to your gut here. Eat the cheese!
