It can not be overstated how important the Great Firewall was to China's growth and stability today. Imagine how splintered and chaotic China would be if Facebook, Google and Twitter were free to infect their population with Western propaganda.

Xi please extended the wall and let us in. Imagine if we were free from that too.

HB is blocked btw. HB, .ml, and grad seem to be the only ones. Pifed.social blocks China.

[-] SockOlm@hexbear.net 36 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

lemmygrad is not blocked, at least according to this site www.chinafirewalltest.com/?siteurl=lemmygrad.ml

Hexbear is likely blocked because of some unaffiliated crypto currency scam a few years ago that had hex in the name.

no idea about ml, maybe because the TLD is from mali? lemmygrad also has a .ml TLD however so idk.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 33 points 4 days ago

Sorry, it's my fault, I sent Xi cringe

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 26 points 4 days ago

Oh you're right about grad, it gives me a "connection timed out" page, then reloads it normally, weird.

[-] LadyCajAsca@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago

i tested more links there, apparently lemmy.ml is blocked, but dbzer0, feddit, .world, .zip, beehaw aren't..?

[-] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

Very good chance that Hexbear was just temporarily down lol

Is there an apology form for previous opposition to the great firewall? Or just their censorship in general.

[-] CupcakeOfSpice@hexbear.net 27 points 4 days ago

Yeah. I used to be really anti-censorship, but now I'm more "no investigation, no right to speak." Which means I do a lot of not speaking 'cause I have much to learn still.

[-] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago

It’s right to be extremely skeptical of censorship but I think we’ve fully tested at this point whether there should be censorship of some kind. The answer being yes. Covid really put it to the test.

[-] red_giant@hexbear.net 29 points 4 days ago

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 74 points 4 days ago

Remember when that tell-all came out from the former FB exec that was always getting super angry at China for not letting FB in as she documented all the ways FB regularly tried to sidestep China's laws and regulations?

This is so wild.

Also, where does Zuck's chuddification fit in the timeline? Did he start wearing the chains after the last china rejection?

[-] Leon_Grotsky@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I'm pretty sure that and the haircut change started after he let his nictitating membrane slip in that congressional hearing.

spoiler

The discourse for like a whole month afterward was he was an alien lizardman, and he immediately pivoted from "I am literally Caesar Augustus" to Quirky Faillennial Tech CEO

[-] AFineWayToDie@hexbear.net 50 points 4 days ago

Maybe it's a mercy. If he becomes Chinese they know they're gonna execute him.

[-] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 39 points 4 days ago
[-] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 11 points 4 days ago

It would be a cruelty to make the Chinese tolerate him long enough for him to do crimes that cause material harm to people warranting his execution. Which might take weeks or even a few months.

The dude is that boring.

[-] bunnossin@hexbear.net 42 points 4 days ago

Man it's like this government has some sort of Principles... no that couldn't be it

[-] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 38 points 4 days ago

He began with the issue, which is that he let China know who he is.

Ohhh OP reveals to me why China allows billionaires to exist... it's so they have people whose jobs it is to deal with shit like talking to Zuckerberg

[-] miz@hexbear.net 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

need to update the red sails article

  • Billionaires work as “adapters” to the rest of the capitalist world, enabling trade and collaboration as well as tempering anxiety arising from fear of the unknown, which helps prevent encirclement.
[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 6 points 4 days ago

i dispute that a multi-millionaire couldn't do anything a billionaire is purported to do. just tax them more damn.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago

a multi-millionaire couldn't do anything a billionaire is purported to do

you think a millionaire could really sit there and talk to and listen to zuckerberg without sweating?

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 4 points 4 days ago

I don’t even understand why he bothers. Is it just western hubris?

He’s no longer the quirky college drop out go getter. His name and company are synonymous with profit via poison. If you already have the infrastructure in place to replace him, there’s no reason to ever consider his products. The only value he has is that the company has access to billions of people’s info across the world, and I’m sure China is already able to access that through data brokers and espionage

[-] AHemlocksLie@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago

The line must go up, and the rest of the market is thoroughly tapped already. Gotta try to expand literally anywhere they can.
