even if you still think it's possible, it's plain that the current extinction event and the technological setbacks/energy crises it will bring is going to prevent much progress being made towards the currently science fiction-level technology and energy required to get even close.

No disagreement from me on this point. And by no means did I mean its inevitability will happen in our lifetime or even centuries from now. Just that it is theoretically possible and there is no physical limitation that forbids it, unlike say, faster than light space travel. But since you believe in human souls I'm curious- would you ever concede that a sufficiently advanced machine could be conscious or dismiss it as a trickery of code? Does consciousness only arise when a soul is assigned to an organism with 46 chromosomes?

Human consciousness is an emergent property of neurons firing in our brain. Unless you attribute consciousness to some external mystical force, replicating it should theoretically be possible. I'm not saying LLMs are the path to get there or that we are anywhere close to it, but it seems inevitable that it is eventually achieved.

Thumbs aren't the only recent update that is still under beta testing. All of the innovations that made us bipedal weren't made to last as long as our current lifespans- that's why half the population has bad knees or back problems before they hit 50.

A word of advice- cut the shrooms at the base instead of pulling them out. It keeps the mycelium healthier so you get better second flushes.

Steven Crowder had more than double Tucker Carlson's viewers? I thought Crowder faded into obscurity because I haven't seen his name in a while while Tucker seems to be everywhere landing high profile guests and getting big money backing.

Yes, they definitely refused to vote for Kamala just because she's a woman so send them back to Mexico. Now remind them which North American nation was the first to elect a female president.

I appreciate how the host let her speak without cutting her off with a patronizing dismissal.

Who is tuning in to Amazon to watch lib coverage of the election that CNN and MSNBC already do much better? I watched a few minutes of this out of curiosity and it's a low budget shitshow with shoddy production and camera work. And Brian Williams? Did I miss his redemption arc? Wasn't he banished from NBC for being the George Santos of network news? Is this all Jeff Bezos could afford?

The one good thing Biden did in office was appoint Lina Khan as FTC chair. The first thing Harris will do if elected is replace her at the bidding of the billionaire class who have been threatening to pull support because she has actually been doing her job enforcing antitrust violations.

I don't think those should be considered treats. Treats attempt to hijack the rewarding sense of satisfaction we get from engaging in those activities by intensifying the pleasure with instantly gratifying substitutes.

Imagine telling a liberal in 2008 that the DNC would be using an endorsement from the Cheneys as a campaign strategy for their 2024 candidate. It would sound absurd beyond reason. And yet, here we are.

Our entire economy is being propped up by the AI grift now. 8 of the 10 largest companies by market cap are either spending all of their CapEx on training AI or selling the hardware necessary to do it (the only exceptions are Saudi Aramco and Berkshire Hathaway). This is just an insane funneling of money into one industry that can only result in one of two outcomes- 1. AGI is achieved and whoever wields it will have godlike power or 2. there is a market crash the likes of which we have never seen before. Guess which is more likely.

There is no escape. We are all trapped here together.

An executive in an American military contractor that is providing data analytics to the IDF joking about war crimes. This attack could not have been planned and executed so successfully without Palantir's services and they are gleefully celebrating their involvement without explicitly saying so.

Whatever intern came up with this deserves a raise.

This AI bubble is rapidly accelerating and it will take the entire market (and global economy) down with it. And while Sam Altman didn't singlehandedly ignite the new silicon arms race, OpenAI (and ChatGPT) did usher in the era we are now living in.

Much was said about Nvidia overtaking Microsoft today to become the world's most valuable company, but take a look at the top 3:

They are ALL beneficiaries of partnerships with OpenAI. Microsoft added a trillion dollars of market cap since partnering with them last year and Apple hit new all time highs after their announcement that ChatGPT will power "Apple Intelligence". And Nvidia? Well, they were just a $300 billion dollar video game card maker 5 years ago and now they are the biggest company on earth because their cards train AI models.

I'm just flabbergasted at how quickly and thoroughly the promises made by one small startup has become the economic backbone of the entire stock market. The bubble popping for this hype cycle will be one for the ages.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has called on the European Union to collaborate with the United States in addressing the surge of Chinese green-tech exports, warning that the influx threatens global manufacturing sectors.

Last week, the US administration announced tariffs of 25 percent on steel and aluminum, 50 percent on semiconductors, 100 percent on electric vehicles, and 50 percent on solar panels.

Speaking in Germany this Tuesday, Yellen emphasized the need for a united response to China’s manufacturing dominance to protect industries worldwide, as initially reported by FT.

“China’s industrial policy may seem remote as we sit here in this room, but if we do not respond strategically and in a united way, the viability of businesses in both our countries and around the world could be at risk,” Yellen told FT at the Frankfurt School.

In a speech on Tuesday, Yellen defended the Biden administration’s tariff hikes including a 400 percent increase on China electric vehicles. “The tariff increases are strategic and targeted steps,” she stated. This follows the White House’s tariff adjustments aimed at safeguarding U.S. industry, especially in key electoral states.

In a post on the social media platform X, Joe Biden said that “China is determined to dominate these industries” while enhancing that he is “determined to ensure America leads the world in them”.

Clearly Hamas is the very caricature of evil so anything less than sadistic violence must be done for propaganda purposes

It seems like everyone just accepted the idea that the barbarous hordes from Gaza must obviously be raping any Israeli girl they could get their hands on, repeating those claims as if it were accepted fact. But it never made sense to me- not because such acts are beneath them, but due to the time and logistical constraints they were under during their limited time beyond the Gaza borders. But it seems like everyone, including every media outlet, wouldn't stop adding the accusations of rapes to the list of horrors Israelis faced that day.

That said, I am under no delusion that the hostages, once secured and taken to their base, are not at risk of being sexually assaulted. But nearly every interview I've seen with family members of (female) hostages seems to be highly concerned with rape as a likely outcome as if this is a common practice among Palestinians. I've seen many of them repeating that "Hamas is ISIS" and let their imaginations run wild with the worst possible scenarios.

But based on the hostages who have been released so far, we can at least say they were treated FAR, FAR better than the captives under US detainment in Abu Grahib or Guantanamo Bay.
