Baffled at the people in that thread who are basically arguing that Communists are not Communists

[-] Goferking0@ttrpg.network 11 points 1 day ago

What's wild is I saw people arguing that grail was a tankie in a comics thread grail started

[-] Juice@midwest.social 21 points 1 day ago

I just had an encounter with Grail, they were badfaithing in an ask socialism thread, but I don't remember what comm. I didn't know they were badfaithing and wrote long comments in response just to have them be like "nah imma debate bro".

I fall for this shit way too often. I don't like how hostile some people get toward what appear to be good faith posters, and I also want to help good faith posters work through their questions about socialism.

But then I engage and get burned. Ive sdrastically slowed my effort commenting, switching to more quippy and sarcastic comments, and I don't like how cynical it has made me. But now that I think about it, usually people who are actually radicalizing ask specific questions, often stuff like "what is the long term plan" because they still think too abstract and think their hesitance is due to some logic, when usually its more complicated than that. They also say stuff about how a lot of people don't want to read theory or that the left should update their terms and jargon. And to be fair, I don't dislike any of those comments. So maybe I just need to start with asking questions before spending an afternoon crafting 1000 words on how the April thesis connects to the previous 70 years of revolutionary struggle in late 19th - early 20th c.

They don't usually want to court controversy, so they don't go after like Lenin, which Grail was doing, albeit in a way that came off like a misunderstanding. It really demonstrates the thought process of these bad faith posters and commenters. Like there are comms like "meanwhile on grad" and "meanwhile on world" and "the dunk tank", maybe this comm but i haven't spent much time here, where people find examples of the other camp saying dumb shit, and everyone memes on them. But leftists (almost) never pretend to be liberals to bait out random bad takes. Bad faith posters almost always do this.

Leftists want to project strength and confidence, to educate or defend. Even in cases where it is a little selfish and individualistic, its honest. Bad faith posters will often pretend to be innocent or just asking questions, when they're actually manipulating people in order to snipe a few bad comments and farm karma on their dunk comms.

I can relate to this especially. I try to catch myself, edit out quips I may make, and try to reframe myself towards revolutionary optimism. It's a regular internal battle. I think I do okay at keeping a level head, but I can't pretend I'm perfect at it.

[-] Juice@midwest.social 8 points 1 day ago

I think you do alright. We've been at odds before on a few small differences and never came away feeling like you completely lost the plot. You genuinely come off as someone who wants to educate, and who cares about socialism. I think you sometimes are a bit too invested in apologetics, but I'm also averse to rhetoric and most forms of propaganda, which makes me a bit of an outlier I think; lots of Marxists are principled practitioners, whereas my approach to Marxism I think was sort of unusual and I can't guarantee that I'm the best comrade because of it.

But I enjoyed your Dialectical Materialism post a lot, you put a lot of work into it and as someone who has written extensively on the topic, albeit mostly secretly as I'm not prone to share much of my writing, I think you covered the topic In a practical and informative way. And you even handled my slight criticism quite well.

But you post and comment a lot, I'm certain you run into the issue more than I do. But in my view, it shows that you care about more than just reacting to takes you dislike or defeating a debate opponent or whatever. Youre a comrade

[-] Cowbee@hexbear.net 9 points 1 day ago

Thanks, I appreciate it! And yea, I know we've butted heads before, but I never got the impression that it was in bad faith from either side. There's a huge difference between comradely disagreement and the sheer vitriol reactionaries have for us. I don't really like rhetoric, which is why I intentionally try to take arguments, no matter how flawed, at their best interpretation and break them down regardless.

And thanks for the appreciation on my diamat post! I made it sort of to flesh out my own understanding, and to try to help inform others. I see many people getting tripped up on the dialectical part even with good intentions, and made it a point of focused self-study before making it. I'm glad you appreciated it!

Thanks, comrade!

The shitlibs are using 'shitlib' as an insult?

Don't know how I feel about that, so many of these dorks are just embarrassed white supremacists, conservatives alienated by the Trump phenomenon. Somehow I'd prefer they just embraced that reality instead of trying to ape our vocabulary and pretending they're anywhere within a million miles of the Left Tradition

They're not even left liberal, these people couldn't define Keynesianism even with the help of a dozen AI data centers

Bored, downwardly mobile trust fund kids slowly going deranged because they can't comprehend the basic premises of socialism or even the capitalist stabilizing ideology they pretend to adhere

[-] billgamesh@hexbear.net 65 points 2 days ago

As a centrist, everyone is further right than me. Anyone with goals that seem to be to the left of me actually aren't because authoritarianism

[-] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 39 points 2 days ago
[-] Embargo@lemmy.zip 31 points 2 days ago

Oh, man. I'd never heard of horseshoe theory before but after looking it up and finding examples, it's nonsense. One example in particular states that the right doesn't want race mixing due to white genocide and the left don't due to cultural erasure. I don't believe I could find anyone that sits on the left that would ever parrot that garbage. I was just left wondering what the drive of the writer was... Are they purely trying to muddy the waters in order to validate fascists?

[-] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

No, they are trying to obscure that the political spectrum is complex, but actually resembles more of a fishhook on the Western center-left and right, which is how you have supposedly "leftist progressive Democrats" comparing Russians to "orcs", in agreement with Ukrainian white nationalists.

All 'liberal' (of which the Democrats and Republicans are both followers of) ideas orbit white/western supremacy, it is the well of gravity that the fish hook encircles. Eugenics was originally advocated for by the 'Progressive' movement. Neo-liberalism was directly inspired by Italian and Japanese fascist thinkers and writers. Hitler viewed the U.S.'s treatment of the Native Americans as a blueprint for a greater Germany. American marketers were directly inspired by the propaganda campaigns by Nazi Germany. Etcetera, etcetera.

Every now and then the far right wing and far left wing will agree on something. However, this is almost always exclusivly related to an interpretation of geopolitics, where the right-wing believes something is 'based traditionalism', where as we recognize it as reactionary, but the primary contradiction that exists in the world at the moment is within western imperialism. The greater and more real class conflict undergirds it all, but right now you make solidarity where you can. If the U.S. empire can be brought to heel, it will give all kinds of leftist projects room to breathe.

Probably more to invalidate communists, but it comes out to the same either way.

There are 8 people who haven't blocked grail?

[-] sharkfucker420@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Who tf is grail?

(Beyond the fact that they are in the post)

[-] Poutine@hexbear.net 4 points 20 hours ago

We need a Grail explainer wiki page. There's just too much to summarize from memory.

In the shortest possible summary: pain

[-] Hestia@hexbear.net 33 points 2 days ago

Centrism with leftist characteristics

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 31 points 2 days ago

It would be refreshingly self-aware of these people, if they didn't make something like this without a modicum of self-awareness.

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 34 points 2 days ago

I think that anyone who relates to that meme is like 6 months away from joining Hexbear. The self awareness is solidly on its way at that point, just needs a little more time to cook.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 20 points 2 days ago

I would certainly hope so, but I would think most of them are more in the area that Grail is in, thinking "Tankies" are just right wingers pretending to be leftists for some reason (not that Grail thinks this, they know what they're doing, actively trying to misinform people)

[-] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 26 points 2 days ago

Nah, Grail is a Blue Maga Progressive that justifies it by saying its the most left position.

Most left-libs arent blue maga so eventually they get attacked for not being 100% loyal like bernie/hasan fans

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

Maybe I'm getting my people mixed up, I thought Grail was Droneright's latest account?

[-] spectre@hexbear.net 10 points 2 days ago

The people that you are describing do not relate to the meme. I'm talking about anyone who views "tankies" as to their left, as depicted in the meme.

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago

Yeah, I was pretty off base here really.

[-] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

I see times and places where I can do better and it fills me with shame. I've also sometimes believed that people are annoying and/or wrong, but I've never believed they're too far left.

[-] asdasd201@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago

Lemmy Shitpost

Hell yes it is one.

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 17 points 2 days ago

Amazing how they're all pissing and shitting themselves when asked how they've defeated capitalism or if they support Palestine.

[-] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 15 points 2 days ago

I'd make this diagram but there's no one more to the left than me
