Against this backdrop, the German government has reportedly decided to push for further changes in Brussels. According to Automobilwoche, these include:

  • Less stringent requirements for plug-in hybrids
  • Permitted excess emissions after 2035 do not need to be fully offset
  • Vehicles powered exclusively by e-fuels should be ‘immediately’ classified as zero-emission vehicles
  • CO₂ interim targets before 2035 should be made more flexible
  • The German government rejects the planned supercredits for electric vehicles under 4.20 metres in length
  • The government also rejects the proposed regulation for corporate fleets

Ape brain Autobahn mentality. Thank you (Sch)Merz.

How about fixing the disastrous German train network?

[-] Ooops@feddit.org 18 points 1 month ago

But which industry lobbyists would pay them then?

Bribe money from Deutsche Bahn was on its way to Berlin, but the train was cancelled due to a technical issue.

May be it was due to quantum improbability

nope nope. no need. what we need instead is to have incentives for car users to convert to European-made electric cars or to bikes and public transit!

at most, we need to support European car companies to stay up (to avoid the US ones overflooding the market, since those are often not compliant with EU rules). that can be done by incentivising them to go electric/hydrogen, or even solar.

So embarrassed for our government. Doing everything to make sure our industry does not have any future for a more month of profits.

Then, they'll just sob and cry for bailouts when people ultimately switch to cheaper chinese EVs after being shafted for the upteenth time by gas price hikes.

[-] kossa@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago

No, they'll do tariffs. This is how 'the West' will decline into irrelevance.

don't listen to our chancellor. he isn't fit for leading a country anyway. he should go lick some eggs.

Give them a millimetre, they take a kilometre.

Can we somehow switch the amount of power Germany and Spain hold in EU?

[-] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 month ago

Germany is truly the husk of its old self now.

[-] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 11 points 1 month ago

Germany always sucked. Before fighting electric cars they were pushing EU to get addicted to Russian gas and shutting down nuclear power plants. Before that they were split in two countries and one wasn't that great. And before that...

Well the east had great public transport, cheap rents and free healthcare.

[-] richardwonka@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago

Uhm… not sure if you’re serious. You know that didn’t work, right?

I’m all for all of those things and more of them, but that particular example isn’t much of a paragon.

We're governed by completely clueless, unimaginative and corrupt imbeciles. It's so clear to see, it really hurts. They do nothing that actually benefits the country. All that counts is power, and lining the pockets of their friends and themselves (golden parachutes after their time in government).

With these kind of politicians Germany is done for. And half the country is OK with it, or thinks literally Nazis are the solution.

[-] nodiratime@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Completely detached from the climate (and economic) reality we find ourselves in.

The absolute embarrassment these fuck knuckles are for us, unbelieveable.

[-] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

And how do they plan to pay for the climate-change damage that causes? For the property damage, emergency services and insurance costs caused by additional flash floods, wildfires, heat domes, and droughts?

For a bunch of conservatives, this is fiscally irresponsible.

(Let's start using their language against them.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)
