There are a billion stars in our galaxy.
There are between 100 billion and 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe.
That's roughly 10^24 stars, each of which might have (at some point in time) contained life on one of their many planets. Even if our Earth is a one in a trillion statistical anomaly, that still leaves like a billion or so Earths that could have life. Whether they are intelligent and whether they achieved intelligence at the same time as us is a whole different story.
