The Republican-controlled US House on Wednesday passed a new version of the SAVE Act, a sweeping voter restriction bill that would require people to show citizenship documents to register to vote and strict forms of photo ID to cast a ballot, potentially disenfranchising tens of millions of Americans.

The House passage of the new bill, now called the SAVE America Act, comes roughly a week after President Trump called on Republicans to “nationalize the voting” and “take over the voting in at least 15 places.” While the latest iteration of the SAVE Act does not usurp state and local election administration in precisely that way, it would still massively federalize new restrictions on voting that Trump and his allies have pushed for years.

The centerpiece of the bill remains a requirement that voters show proof of US citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register to vote. Nine percent of American citizens, roughly 21 million people, don’t have ready access to citizenship documents, according to a study by the Brennan Center and other voting rights groups.

That likely understates the number of Americans who could be burdened by the bill, since most people do not carry around citizenship documents with them. Half of Americans, roughly 146 million people, do not have a passport. And 69 million women who took their partner’s last name and do not have a birth certificate matching their legal name could find it much harder to register to vote under the bill.

The fact that people intentionally vote for Republicans is the most baffling thing of all. Republicans are cartoon villains and have been getting worse every second I've been alive. Fuck these traitors.

That's what happens when you have a propoganda outlet running unchecked for 3+ decades.

Remember that time when Fox News repeated false claims that Obama wasn't born in this country to his face and instead of writing legislation to stop that bullshit with a Democrat controlled legislature he just laughed it off?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Even more than racial disenfranchisement, this is the primary purpose of this policy:

And 69 million women who took their partner’s last name and do not have a birth certificate matching their legal name could find it much harder to register to vote under the bill.

They’re hacking away at women’s suffrage, because statistically, women are overall less likely to vote Republican than men.

It's fucking wild to see the assholes dismantling democracy and they only met with some tweets about it.

It really does damage my calm on a daily basis.

The most Anti-American bills always are named in patriotic fashion

The Republican party is a terrorist organization. They have to be stopped. We have to wrestle power away from them by any means necessary. If we do not succeed, if the Republicans are able to seize total, permanent control of the Federal government, secession will be our only other option.

Edit: it may be necessary for states to establish their own militaries, completely separate from the Federal government. It might be time for the 2nd amendment's true purpose to be realized.

First of all, the Republican Party is officially dead. That was their larval stage until they morphed into their final form - MAGA.

MAGA does not hold the same foundational tenets as Republicans did - smaller government, lower taxes, family values, fiscal responsibility, etc. MAGAs basic philosophy is treason, corruption, racism, rape, violence, and their favorite pastime, pedophilia.

The Republican Party is as dead as the Whigs, and should only be referred to in an historic, scholarly context. They are all MAGA now.

That said, this will never be over until we commit to crushing and purging MAGA from our government and society. We have to declare MAGA to be the serious national security threat that they have proven to be, and prohibited from existing. Their leadership and active members should be officially declared Domestic Terrorists. The worst can be executed or imprisoned in Gitmo for life, and those that have escaped incarceration should be declared Domestic Terrorists, and put on the same sort of registry as Sexual Offenders, with the same sorts of restrictions to their lives.

The punishment against MAGA should be so harsh that it will be remembered for decades, and discourage anyone from trying it again. It should also include standard NATIONAL school curriculum to learn about MAGA, and how to recognize the threat that these people always hold. That ugly slice of humanity is always there, waiting for a country to get distracted, and take over. It happened to Germany in the 30s, and it's happening to us today. We have to teach children in the future how to watch out for them, and teach them how to avoid them when the traitors get froggy.

No, the Republican party is not dead. They just dropped the mask. MAGA isn't a shift in ideology, they're just not trying to hide what monsters they are anymore.

But they've always supported bullshit like this.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 4 hours ago

Nope, Republicans were caterpillars, MAGAs are butterflies.

Republicans were proud of being Republicans, but they put it aside in the naked pursuit of corrupt power, and for that, they have forever tainted the Republican Party as a National Security Threat, and Domestic Terrorists. They have destroyed the party they loved, and we should take it away from them.

There is a reason that GOP stands for Guardians Of Pedophiles.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 4 hours ago

I thought it stood for Gang O' Pedophiles.

[-] ooterness@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

The National Guard is already a thing. I don't think it's working out like you hoped.

[-] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

The national guard is a reservist group for the Federal military. There's way too much Federal involvement. No, new, independent state militias would need to be formed.
