I was really into Spreadsheets in Space years ago. How’s EVE these days?

[-] llamapocalypse@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

I'm a relatively new player (started late 2023) but I'm having a blast, they're introducing new content pretty regularly (the Odysseus exploration command ship is really fun, and I'm actually the #1 loser of them in the game right now lol) and there's still a slow trickle of new players joining.

Oh man, i love the odysseus. Its capabilities, its model, its sound and look. Took me 4 months of solo gas mining to get it ( and a few loses in between due to ganks because i got bored ) and im now poor but #noRegrets haha
I stopped playing again, and im legit scared to use it but in the right hands it looks to be a nice ship!

Its price of 2.5b just makes it way way less attractive to actually use though

It's super fun but yeah, pricy lol. My combat fit is basically "big drone Proteus with links" and it makes really good bait - lost my last one to a Tholos/Sentinel combo because I forgot about the breacher pod DoT after I escaped twice, the last tick hit like a fraction of a second before my reps cycled

I miss EVE. 2010 to 2015 was when I played. It was excellent.

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 7 points 3 days ago

You were pretty much there for its peak, then. Those were the good days. I don't know that I would be up for the time commitment these days, but I still miss those times now and then.

[-] ark3@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 days ago

time to rewatch Clarion Call

[-] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

And clear skies

[-] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 7 points 3 days ago

Damn, a Rooks and Kings reference in 2026? You're making me want to go back too. Anatomy of a Fight was always my favourite vid of theirs, personally.

[-] Bahnd@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Pretty, that ship is a monster in the right hands.

How do you fit it for WH life?

[-] llamapocalypse@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

I've got it rigged up so I can swap between 2 fits - a fleet fit with remote reps and a 1600mm plate, and a solo roaming fit that's 100mn active rep. I also have an expanded probe fit that is kind of hilarious for hunting/suspect baiting in HS (and you can do something similar with the Draugur too)

[-] Bahnd@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Nice, Ive only flown that ship a few times, it feels much to similar to the Orthrus after it was released. Space Lambo that only really shines after you throw money at its fit.

Something too nice to drive for serious business, perfect for messing around in safe space with the nerd herd.

[-] llamapocalypse@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

oh yeah it's not hard to hit 1B in the Draugur by just going "well, it could be a liiiiiitle faster with this upgrade, and then it could be tankier, an extra few km on the warp disruptor would be nice..."

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

I never liked flying expensive ships. Trained logi V but even those felt a bit rich, T1 cruisers is about the most expensive I liked to fly. But each time I go back to the game there are vast periods of nothing to do. No fleets running, there is one later but I am going to bed by then so another uneventful day.

Not a fan of solo PvP, remote shield reps dont do much there anyway. Tried Albion too as it's got similarities, but again time between action felt fairly high or pointless blobfests.

[-] Bahnd@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I feel this in my space bones. Been in space since 2013 and can functionally do everything, burnt out in 0.0 about 6 years ago, but keep my sub up and occasionally do the solo roam when I fancy shitting in the space chereeos of my old targets.

Gave albion more than a fair shake and will return every few months, I enjoy the routine of the player housing there and the new FW is a nice change of pace.

EvE still holds a special place for me, but I really disconnected when I left reddit. The shitposting and memes of the subreddit really was the pulse of that game for me, I only wish the fediverse could have such activity, it really kept me connected

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

I do wonder if I should give Albion FW another try. Playing as a free player doesn't even matter for PvP does it? Just need it slower to gain skills/money so not a problem for giving it a try. It was always blobfests in green/yellow zones when I tried it before but I did hear that they were planning on changing things for it and that was quite a while ago now, not played in at least a year.

In both games I always liked small to medium groups, not blobs and not solo.

[-] Bahnd@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Albions new FW is even more blobfest, but its much more objective and siege oriented after the update. Both games made a fast travel method for players to get to the front, and the timing is more like the alert system from planetside 2. Overall its a big improvment, you can expirence the big battles that the outlands are famous for, but there are no shot callers and people respawn if they get into the zone in time.

EvEs frontlines are very similar, but without a dramatic fight scheduled every 2 hours.

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

Is the AO one in yellow or red zone? I got kinda bored of people in extremely expensive gear that they can't lose in yellow.

[-] Bahnd@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

IIRC there are fortresses in both, but obviosuly the yellow zones are more popular, for that exact reason (it is gear capped, so the impact of rich players is minimized)

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

Not heard of frontlines for EVE, might look it up

[-] llamapocalypse@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

A lot of the Navy cruisers are great for the price - the Omen Navy, Osprey Navy, and Scythe Fleet are all solid kiting ships that you can fit well for ~100m isk, and you can do a solid kiting Vagabond or Muninn or Deimos for sub-300m (my RLML muninn is like 180m, fantastic antitackle). And there's always assfrigs or interceptors for 40-50m

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

100M is a lot, T2 frigs usually alright, joined bombers bar ops quite a bit when I could. But timing for things often means most of your playtime is doing nothing.

[-] llamapocalypse@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Unironically get yourself into a good wormhole corp - always something fun to do and the money is solid, especially in C4-C5 holes but even C3s are decent. Explo, gas, PvE and sometimes PvP make you good money (oh these Prospects all had Syndicate gas scoops for some reason!) and basically anything you're actively doing can generate content. I'm a singleboxer and still enjoy WH space way more than any other area in the game because of how unpredictable and fun it can be.

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

How large of a corp do you usually get in a single wormhole?

[-] llamapocalypse@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

It varies, the corp I'm in is about 15 people but but many are around 50-100. Bigger than that and it's hard to sustain unless people start getting their own farmholes to make isk which is kind of a pain.

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

This game looks cool but is it better than elite damgerous? I don't have time for either anyway, haha

[-] MeatPilot@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Besides being expansive "space themed" MMOs. The two games are wildly different.

Elite Dangerous is more "fly your ship in first-person"

Eve online is more "click click tactics"

TMI:

I played Elite more than EVE. So I'm biased in I liked Elite better. But it was just too big it felt empty. I think what finally killed Elite Dangerous for me was trying to make the trip Sol to Sagittarius A (galactic center). Was a challenge, but on the way back my game crashed right as I entered a neutron star system and I got pulled into the cone.

I was so pissed, I just haven't touched it since. Still pisses me off recalling it. Spending weeks of my life jumping from system to system, gathering so much data to only to get screwed by something like that.

[-] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 days ago

EVE is also everything is player built MMO sandbox, player run economy. Elite is pretty much single player with optional coop.

[-] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Not fully player run economy, but it is like 80% player run ye

[-] Million@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

I would be hooked to EVE if it was half its current price, heck I would probably run two accounts.

For me its just mad that WOW sub is 12 and eve sub is 20. One is the most played MMO ever and the other is a niche space mmo.

One has active users in the multiple millions range and other in tens of thousands.

I only have 600 hous in EVE.

[-] Gibibit@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I would play Eve if running multiple accounts wasn't the norm... It stifles the MMO part so much when a lot of players just run their own group.

[-] UnrefinedChihuahua@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I had an unhealthy addiction to Somer Blink. I also loved eve too I guess...
