Be Kind, Rewind was released in 2008. I 100% was torrenting and seeding back then.

[-] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 24 points 3 months ago

Had no idea it was a movie, was a slogan at video rental places (that were pretty much out of business by 2008) before I was born. Seeding torrents is a p deece analogy for the benefit it provided

[-] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago

Its jack black and mos def iirc. Fuck jack black, pirate the movie.

[-] Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

What's wrong with Jack Black?

It always baffles me that this seems to be hard for many people

[-] vozercozer@lemmy.world 35 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

i used to work retail, what annoyed me more than the cart stuff was when people just left refrigerated items they didnt want anymore on shelves. is it rly that hard to walk a couple extra seconds to put it back? just spoils food, attracts bugs

edit: spelling

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 months ago

At one of the bigger groceries I've been to, the wheels would lock up if you got too far from the store. Well, we'd parked outside that range so the wheels locked up and I had to awkwardly drag the full cart to the car.

Being a good person, I went to drag it back to the return spot. The wheels did not unlock. Dragged it all the way back anyway.

But given this, I can see why someone might just abandon their cart if the wheels are locked.

[-] Zozano@aussie.zone 4 points 3 months ago

My Dad tried to argue "it creates jobs".

He really didn't want to accept that trolley pushers aren't given more time to fetch the carts.

All it does is make the job harder.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 3 months ago

It doesn't create any new jobs. It just creates a task the already employed people at the store need to deal with. Walmart claims they have dedicsted cart wranglers, but every store I have worked at just made CAP go out and do it during lulls in other tasks.

Omg I bitched out these two ladies at the theater many years ago. Left a massive mess of popcorn, left drinks, everything. I asked if they were going to leave it, they said they're helping the theater employees keep their jobs. I followed the bitches out of the theater and called them out in front of an employee cleaning another theater. Grown ass women. I was getting loud, they ran into the women's restroom to avoid me, I left after that. Fucking hate people.

Given the economy, it may be "If you see someone stealing food, no you didn't."

[-] slazer2au@lemmy.world 30 points 3 months ago

Do people not rewind their streaming media? No wonder it takes so long to load.

True story: once I have seen a device for sale on eBay, for rewinding DVD's. On the photo it was mainly a green tissue box.

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 4 points 3 months ago

Maybe about plugging in devices to charge when you're done with them? Schools use laptops a lot now, but don't think they're communal ones on carts anymore.

[-] baka@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 months ago

I wouldn't say it's the equivalent but I kind of enjoy this...

Have the day you deserve.

It's not pleasant if you're an asshole and a grumpy fuck. And it's great if you're a good person..

When you do use traditional social media, try to actively downvote and if you can justify it report engagement bait. People will intentionally do stuff like pronouncing things wrong or even just straight up lying about shit just to get engagement from people correcting them. Also do the same for people that add nothing but their facial expression to call something their own content or even another stolen video played side by side or who post still memes as video.

Federation has the opportunity to solve a lot of these issues but unless special attention is taken to create voting systems that promote healthy community engagement the corporate pressures will eventually push into these spaces as well. I've wondered for a while if there's a good way to create an algorithm that would offer the comfort of a targeted media algorithm except readable, modifiable and executable only by the end user's client. Piefed is probably the best push towards that kind of functionality currently, but very prototypically.

[-] Postmortal_Pop@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

To really capture the full spirit of it, I think the the closest thing would be a YouTuber asking you to join their Patreon. The point of the Be Kind Rewind slogan was that you putting in a little effort now meant that the video store clerk or the next renter wouldn't have to do it and could instead do their actual job or just watch the movie in convinence. If everyone did it by default, there would be no need for the slogan and the stickers.

YouTube Patreon plugs hit all those marks. It's a small inconvenience that you do because it means they can do their actual work in producing media and the next guy can watch content without having the inconvenience of paying for it. If everyone did it by default, they wouldn't need to mention it in every episode. The only real difference is you're trading your physical effort for your commodified effort.

[-] Butterpaderp@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

I disagree, 'be kind rewind' is a free action, whereas joining someone's patreon involves money. Not everyone can pay for patreon, but everyone had the ability to rewind.
