Yes we can use Invidious but I'm linking his actual video for the occasional ad click, though I think there's a patreon too so no shame using the frontends the bot will link.

Folks, it's amazing. I'm currently at Chapter 10. Truly, this is an amazing deep dive, only rivaled by the Jenny Nicholson Galactic Starcruiser video (there's actually moments in this video you could cut her video in to just expand the entire thing).

If you didn't see "Part 1" - it's here: https://youtu.be/jjNca1L6CUk

I'm not going to watch a four hour thing about how disney doesn't put effort into their animatronics any more.

But if that's your bag more power to you. It's easy for me to be snide. But my entertainment isn't more meaningful than that.

Not quite - Defunctland is always good on explaining the Disney hagiography is exaggerated (one of his videos is about the drunken debauchery/sexism of early Disney, and he recognizes the theme parks as a direct response to unionization - timestamp).

It's also more about the shift from animatronics to this other "living characters" thing and reanimation (the previous 1.5 hr video lol). It's really good, but you gotta be into things like mechanical turks and such.

Not even an hour in yet but I loved the part where they created a metal gear

Them introducing it to the execs in the most terrorizing way possible was beautiful.

Amazing stuff really - it's funny they built the technology to uhhh.... kill people?

Loved it. Really gives a close up view of how capitalism abuses art and artists to make the line go up. So many cool things that just ended up being used like once and then never again. And that’s not to mention all the good that could have been done putting that money into literally anything else other than an animated transphobic Stitch or a muppet that flirts with you.

Hilarious how Walt allegedly didn’t want to be an animatronic but ended up being a mediocre side show at his theme park decades down the line anyway. That shit’s got to be the most boring thing to sit through. At least it has AC.

Yeah some of those applications were insane. It's funny how the technology kinda peaks with Turtle Talk with Crush - it's a genuinely effective show, tries to build awareness about the oceans a bit, and is fun "magic". The room also has AC, so it's superior to the Walt Fest.

I really like how he explains how the work of R&D to create this cool stuff gets devoured/diminished by "operations" and their desire to turn a profit. Talking Mickey costs 4 cast members, let's just do the silent one that needs 2.

Park Ops being the boogeyman that eats cool stuff alive is a throughline through a lot of Defunctland Disney stuff. Fastpass was a similar case I think? Only thing I can think of that wasn’t eaten alive by Park ops was the yeti that was so big when it moved it began to destroy the foundation of the ride it was on. Otherwise it’s just some middle manager behind a desk trying to wring every dollar out of this stuff that they can. I feel for the artists, but the biggest entertainment mega corp not being able to effectively deliver entertainment is a nice talking point to radicalize some Disney adults at least.

The Fastpass thing is so interesting - originally a great innovation (increases ride thorouput/efficiency and guest experience), and then eventually just enshittified/paywalled to oblivion.

I sincerely do not understand the appeal of multi-hour videos.

I love the deep dive into a topic that's very niche.

The same reason I love "The King of Kong"

[-] 9to5@hexbear.net 3 points 5 months ago

I dont mind it on paper but it needs to be a topic im REALLY into.

Me after watching a movie over 90 mins

[-] miz@hexbear.net 2 points 5 months ago

I dunno that hbomberguy one about plagiarism kept my attention

I feel similar in the sense that if I watch a youtube vid that is longer than 30min it either needs to be really fun or informative (I sometimes watch tutorials for stuff)

[-] MiraculousMM@hexbear.net 2 points 5 months ago

It has to be presented in an engaging enough way and centered on a topic that's actually interesting for me to even consider watching. But the ones that meet those criteria tend to be excellent in my experience.

Idk, it felt a little repetitive compared to his other long form videos

Breadtube if it didn't suck.

Post videos you genuinely enjoy and want to share, duh. Celebrate the diversity of interests shared by chapochatters by posting a deep dive into Venetian kelp farming, I dunno. Also media criticism, bite-sized versions of left-wing theory, all the stuff you expected. But I am curious about that kelp farming thing now that you mentioned it.

Low effort / spam videos might be removed, especially weeb content.

There is a cytube that you can paste videos into and watch with whoever happens to be around. It's open submission unless there's something important to commandeer it with at the time.

A weekly watch party happens every Saturday (Sunday down under), with video nominations Saturday-Monday, voting Monday-Thursday. See the pin for whatever stage it's currently in.
