Yes. An acquaintance had to answer to Child Protective Services because they had a family trip to their home country and their kids missed 4 days of school without warning.

This happened all the time in my home country and no one batted an eye. The homeroom teacher just wrote up the tally towards the maximum allowable absence days, and informed the student and their parents via the booklet about the remaining days, which when exceeded, would automatically result in repeat of the school grade or expulsion (past the age of 16).

In America, not every school is staffed to the point where they can have someone sit on phones all day. Most schools around me are working on shoestring budgets, and I'm in a fairly cosmopolitan area of California. It's even worse if you're in a rural area because there's no incentive to get good teachers there through pay rates or bonuses or anything like that. God help your kids if you're in a red state. They are giving emergency teaching credentials to anyone with a pulse.

My pro tip for the dad and people wanting to be like the dad is to lead with the important information and then show the meme. Or even better, keep your partner in the loop regarding the stuff you're doing as you're doing it, at least when you're doing this kind of stuff that is on multiple peoples' radars. That way they don't even start freaking out.
My interpretation of the comic is that he had not done these things until after she had yelled at him, making him realize that the situation was really bad and he needed to take it over from her. Arguably he should have come to this realization sooner, but we all occasionally fail to see what is in front of us time to time, so I am willing to cut him slack given that he immediately jumped in without being asked once it became clear he was needed.
Oh, yeah, I could see that being the way it was intended. It's tough to convey the passage of time in pictures.

We have an app we use to notify and I am pretty sure it is only looked at by transportation so the bus driver knows.

What kind of food would that be? Genuinely asking, I've never tasted japanese baked/breakfast foods or seen any place that serves them.
The H-Mart near me has a Japanese bakery next to it. It's a lot of sweet/fluffy breads and pastries mixed with various sweet/savory fillings. For example, they have one that's kind of like a nice flaky croissant wrapped around a sausage that has lots of herb flavor. Or breads filled with custard, red bean paste, taro paste, and similar.
It's generally pretty rich for my tastebuds, but a lot of it is very tasty!
Oh so many things, from savory hotdogs in a fresh bun, curry bread, melon bread, cream filled puff balls, honey crisp Texas toast, you name it. It's a little pricey in the US but when I stayed in Japan, there was a tiny hole in the wall right next door that sold them for 150 yen a piece. It sustained us the whole month, every morning.
