Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

MODERATORS

There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

The Country of the Week is Palestine! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Here is the map of the Ukraine conflict, courtesy of Wikipedia.

The weekly update is here.

The bulletins site is down.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Add to the above list if you can.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Last week's discussion post.

Egyptian politics regarding Gaza have always been a bit of an enigma to me. These Al Jazeera articles1 2 shed a bit of light on the situation, but I still don't get the politics of the Gaza/Egypt border. How is the Israeli blockade so devastating when they only control one side of the border? To what extent can Palestinians cross into Egypt?

Genuinely wondering why they didnt try to fake photos of the beheaded babies tbh, why did they give into it so easily and admit they made it the fuck up?

I just had a thought;

War Crimes, as a matter of international law where combatants who violate the international laws of armed conflict are, de facto, never prosecuted. There just aren't a meaningful number of war crimes convictions. And in a lot of cases, as with the US especially, the perpetrators of war crimes are shielded by powerful patrons. "So and so did war crimes!" is stating that someone broke a law that cannot be enforced, that is mocked by violent aggressors all the time.

Like of course the IDF is doing war crimes. They know the US would never let them be prosecuted.

I was thinking about it bc people keep saying "Well dropping WP on civilians isn't technically a war crime" and it's like yeah, they're right. it's not a violation of some toothless legal code that everyone ignores. It's an unthinkable crime against all mankind, a horrible act with no justification. We don't need a joke of a legal system to tell us that's wrong and the people who do it should be shunned and condemned, at minimum.

More than two million people are at risk in Gaza as water runs out, the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) has warned.

“It has become a matter of life and death. It is a must; fuel needs to be delivered now into Gaza to make water available for 2 million people,” Philippe Lazzarini, the UNRWA commissioner-general said in a statement.

“Clean water is running out in Gaza, after its water plant and public water networks stopped working. People are now forced to use dirty water from wells, increasing risks of waterborne diseases,” the statement said.

Unconfirmed reports of a downed f-16. There seems to be video of it being tracked by a missile and popping flares before appearing to be hit and start going down. Another video that appears to show the parachuting pilot.

I have found some success at arguing that Palestinians have a right to launch attacks into Israel, a country invading the West Bank and bombing Gaza, by equating it with the right to Ukraine to launch attacks into Russia. Libs seem to be sympathetic to that. I know y'all won't like that, but lol.

Elizabeth Warren spews out lib speak.

Democracies like the United States and Israel must uphold the rule of law and protect innocent civilians. As Israel responds to Hamas's terrorist attacks, it must minimize civilian harm, including to Palestinian children, Israeli hostages, and U.S. citizens.

Nitter

What's great about these sorts of tweets is that it sounds like she's a concerned nobody with zero political power. Like she's still a college professor. The first sentence is so weird. She makes it seem that some unnamed country is doing the slaughter and Israel could be a force for good to get them to stop. Also Israel is already committing war crimes so politely pleading for them to behave ain't exactly going to work.

From another thread

Remember a few years ago when a reporter asked her about Israel and she literally just ran away?

What? Does anybody have a link for that? I gotta see it!

Edit 1

Apparently it was in 2014.

Here is a defining moment: Senator Warren running away, at Netroots on July 18, when a reporter asked her about the Gaza slaughter.

In some more positive news:

Other, more neoliberal-leaning forums that I frequent are rapidly turning against Israel as the conflict continues.

Moreover, the support that Western governments are pledging towards Israel, despite the latter's openly genocidal intentions, is acting as a harsh eye-opener.

I can only hope that they won't forget this.

Did a bit more legwork around Tallinn to see what colours the Riigikogu is in. It's still the ukkkraine colours. Also swung past Tornimäe and at least one of the towers is in the Pissnotreal colours, along with many light poles.

Additionally, the South African government continues it's trademark actions of claiming to support Palestine, but doing little more than Ramaphosa keeping his hand in his pants, which certainly hasn't gone unnoticed. Come on when are you imposing sanctions, severing relations by shutting down the embassy in Pretoria (along with any consulates in other cities) and banning El Al from the airspace?

I see a lot of "Hamas are terrorists and therefore bad", but not a lot of concrete examples. The music festival was held next to a concentration camp on stolen land. Regardless of if Hamas intended a massacre at the festival or not, I can't see how you could argue that adults attending that festival didn't know what they were getting into. I think you could certainly argue that they didn't need to be killed (I would agree), but there is essentially no context given (how was the IOF/Police involved, etc.).

The 40 decapitated babies were clearly a lie, they essentially admitted it immediately.

It seems to me that all the violence committed by Hamas is essentially a statistical error in the context of the broader conflict, and that prefacing every statement with a condemnation of Hamas as terrorists only legitimizes the Israeli crybully approach of talking about how they're so victimized and they need to practice self-care by flattening the entire Gaza strip.

What I see, concretely, is that the Israeli state is continuing what it has always done, and that sources are claiming that 90% of the settlers do not intent to return to the stolen land after being "terrorized". While westerners swear that they support Palestine, but wring their hands about Hamas terrorists as Israel kills thousands of children, what I think many people who are victims of colonization around the world will see is that terrorism is the only thing that colonizers respond to, and that all peaceful resistance will get you is hypocritical thoughts and prayers from Twitter-addicted liberals who will forget you ever lived long before your body is cold.
