submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by hello_hello@hexbear.net to c/emoji@hexbear.net

Replace the current israel-cool with this image.

This concept image could also be refined and doesn't have to be submitted as is, if it really is needed, I can also erase the remnant of the blue star of david and just have the red triangle with the fire with the (also religiously significant blue bars so we are going to be called antisemites anyway no matter what).

note: If someone has a better, higher quality rendition of this image (and it's done in a libre image manipulation tool catgirl-hiss) then feel free to post it in the comments including if it's without the red downwards triangle since that should also be considered.

Also the padding on this image is wild (sorry GNU wilbur), it should most likely be resized to the proper dimensions when it goes through.

EDIT:

zionist-despair hamas-base free-palestine and others are all great emojis, but this one of indigenous Hawaiian Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwoʻole is deeply offensive to his legacy and is a mistake to even be included.

If this isn't accepted, IZ should still be removed from :israel:cool: (maybe even just renamed to something better like :stay-mad-iz:)

IZ should no longer be tied to the genocidal entity.

It's been nearly 2 years of genocide. We should just do the Israel cool flag. 🇮🇱🔥

About antisemitism accusations, those don't really work the way it used to in October 2023, I think that's the first time I saw Hexbear thread on this.

Clearly, burning the English flag england-cool is not the same as ISIS (or Israel) destroying Churches and killing Christians.

[-] Maturin@hexbear.net 23 points 5 months ago

I'm in agreement. I missed the first struggle session, but I assume it didn't get into the fact that (at least according to NATOpedia), the star was first adopted as a Zionist symbol and then as a symbol for Judaism generally (not the other way around). Also, we should dispel the false notion that the star is a religious symbol. My understanding is that it may have appeared from time to time in Jewish texts and Jewish ornamentation, but was never considered a sacred symbol in Judaism (ironically meaning you can put it on the floor, throw it in the regular garbage, burn it, etc. unlike, for example, texts containing the name of god).

What it would possibly look like without the triangle.

oof the image is padded weirdly: this one should be less noticeable

[-] BoarAvoir@hexbear.net 33 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Agreed on IZ, that emote has been renamed :iz-shaka: (and tagged appropriately so it's hopefully still findable)

The rest is tbd, thank you for your efforts making it, and your patience!

[-] Jabril@hexbear.net 24 points 5 months ago

Thanks for being quick about the easy part of this struggle session, Hawaiians deserve better

[-] Babs@hexbear.net 31 points 5 months ago

This is just another made up flag like isntrael .

100% on the not associating cool Hawaiian singer man with genocide though. Props to whoever did that.

[-] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 26 points 5 months ago

Why not just a regular Israeli flag burning?

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 14 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

"get 2 birds stoned at once trump-enlightened ": meet halfway on the current discourse around burning the star of david while also creating something a bit more original and poignant (the downwards red triangle feels even more threatening to zionist scum)

[-] Jabril@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago

I prefer the original flag on principle but I appreciate your attempt at compromise and think this one is better than the current one

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 7 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

No desecration of religious imagery. This includes things like burning Israeli/Saudi flag emojis...If you can modify the flags while still accurately representing countries without including said imagery, it is much preferred.

It also passes the rule 3 bar imo so yeah

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 4 points 5 months ago

because a screenshot of that goes a lot further in painting us as antisemites than all the zionist whinging about the mere existence of palestinians

[-] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 31 points 5 months ago

We have famously never been painted as antisemitic before, so we should make concessions to Zionists. Currently, having basic humanity is enough to be painted as a antisemitic, so why tone down our beliefs to percent something that's already happening.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago

i'm merely repeating the previous reasoning

[-] Jabril@hexbear.net 20 points 5 months ago

We have plenty of Jewish users and moreso, the zionists lie equating their genocide machine with Judaism just doesn't hold weight anymore. The world has moved on from this, we are tailing the masses at this point on this line. The only people who care about it are zionists. Not a single Jewish leftist I know gives a single fuck about burning zionist flags. In an internet full of antisemitic websites, this one is not and has never been and is vigilant against it like few others. We don't need to be playing defense against potential zionist slander of a boutique communist website

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago

and iirc it was a jewish user who decided to not add it previously. circumstances may have changed.

[-] Jabril@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago

That's worth noting, I saw someone else say that person may be the one who designed the burning flag emojis in the first place? So if it was a personal decision by a single Jewish user in their own capacity as a designer that is their personal opinion but doesn't represent Jews at large and shouldn't necessarily set the site's precedent if another user wants to make the flag and the rest of the site wants to use it.

We polled trans users and Neuro diverse users on different things, we could poll Jewish users on this or just the user base at large

[-] T34_69@hexbear.net 8 points 5 months ago

Yeah WhyEsEff has actually made a preponderance of the emojis overall and does good work for the site, I don't think she should catch any flak for this because she still left the door open for someone else to come up with the emoji. But that's also means I don't think there's an actual sitewide rule against posting images of burning Israel flags, it was just accepted as a personal decision and left at that, at the time.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago

This years-long struggle session feels like a mix of a border dispute between two thousand year old countries and a theological debate.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 5 points 5 months ago

yeah idk i'm happy to not be responsible for the decision.

[-] SoyViking@hexbear.net 12 points 5 months ago

Hasn't the Zionists cried wolf so many times that nobody pays attention to accusations of antisemitism?

[-] Euergetes@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago

the law in the imperial nations listens to them, speciously and enforces with prejudice. but having/not having an emoji would just be one point in an ocean of ridiculous claims

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago

probably. and that serves their interest when actual factual neonazi antisemitism (like actual stuff not this proposed emote) shows up and people ignore it.

[-] CARCOSA@hexbear.net 24 points 5 months ago

A statement will be made shortly regarding the addition of an israel-cool flag emoji. The IZ emoji is now iz-shaka

I am going to lock this post so that discussion can occur in the upcoming post announcing this change.

[-] SoyViking@hexbear.net 17 points 5 months ago

Personally I would prefer to have a normal :israel—cool:. The zionist scum would love to hide behind their religion but if they want to be a political entity then the symbols of that entity are fair game. In my opinion, slapping Jewish symbols on the genocidal apartheid colony does infinitely more harm to these symbols and to the Jewish people as a whole than any anti-genocide activists could ever dream of doing.

This is not a hill I want to die on. If Jewish users or people who know more about this than me disagrees I'm not going to make a struggle session out of it

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 14 points 5 months ago

I suspect this is going to still cause problems (the fact that we can't just have... a regular "Israeli" flag burning, instead of some euphemism or imitation) and this thread will either be locked or devolve into another struggle session.

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 19 points 5 months ago

It's like it'll always be a tacit admission that burning the Zionist flag is wrong, even if there's a valid(ish) reason for it.

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 15 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

I would have preferred personally to have the regular flag reproduced, but I think covering it partially with a downwards red triangle still keeps the edge somewhat (I also elected not to cover/erase the entire star so it feels more like graffiti rather than a more derivative creation/imitation).

I'd also prefer to have a thread where the site admins give either explicit approval or explicit denial so we can stop having struggle threads over it every so often.

[-] Biggay@hexbear.net 14 points 5 months ago

I thought we had an israel-cool one with an early israeli terrorist cell with a blue hand isntrael as our israel-cool flag version. I do love having :iz-shaka:

[-] 9to5@hexbear.net 14 points 5 months ago

Look mommy. Im in a struggle session thread

[-] culpritus@hexbear.net 7 points 5 months ago

mock-up of another design idea: pool of blood and skulls partially obscuring the star

this is just a quick and dirty version

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Hmm, it feels like this one could be used as evidence of blood libel (thinking as a liberal here), it's also too on the nose (thinking as an emoji enjoyer) and busy. Also the skull emoji doesn't have a consistent design across platforms and has been used more ironically as a term of feeling embarrassed or shocked rather than signifying death itself.

[-] GeckoChamber@hexbear.net 1 points 5 months ago

I think this would be pretty good practice for letting a thing that does not matter go for the flag-burning people. It's a skill that is very useful in organizing.

[-] Jabril@hexbear.net 22 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Letting micro aggressions go would be pretty cool for white people but ultimately it would be more useful for organizing if white people could stop tone policing non white people

Edit: https://hexbear.net/comment/6420256

My comment here goes into why I believe this is a micro aggression against Arabs, Muslims, and anyone directly impacted by zionism

[-] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 17 points 5 months ago

While we're here, I'll paste my comment from the EM POC thread about the banned user:

See, so I did some digging around, and while it's 100% true that they do have a history of hostility, among their alts (or at least what I believe to be their alts, I'm not infallible here) it does appear like there was a clear instance of the same mod telling them to kill themselves and it wasn't addressed.

https://hexbear.net/comment/5311481

This was brought up to a mod who denied that the other mod was talking to the user, but IMO it seems pretty clear that the original message was addressed in the second person perspective.

https://hexbear.net/comment/5379334

Borderline cop behavior.

And also also while I'm here, here's a thread about this topic that I think was more productive than the one from last night, which mostly ended up with people talking past each others and mods wrongly banning people.

[-] Jabril@hexbear.net 23 points 5 months ago

Yeah not into that, also wasn't into that mod recently mentioning being "good friends" with an anti vaxxer anarchist food not bombs founder in a different thread. I'm against having personal beefs with strangers online and find that most users here who I'm not a big fan of also have good comments and posts sometimes. Most of the time that mod seems fine but they and a lot of users here get into a very online "touch grass and/or kill yourself" pattern where they are simultaneously the biggest toucher of grass yet also extremely online and don't seem to catch the irony

[-] hello_hello@hexbear.net 19 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

The touching grass thing is also insulting because we explicitly don't want to reveal personal info here that could dox people (everything here has been combed through by LLM slop generators and feds more than once) so it's an unfalsifiable claim that no one can actually defend themselves against. parenti-hands

[-] T34_69@hexbear.net 18 points 5 months ago

It's really obnoxious and unselfaware behavior tbh

Submit new emoji here.

A good submission is:

  1. Visually clear at a small size (120 pixel width) [This does not mean upload the small image, this means upload the source image or full size cutout but test prior.]
  2. Have a transparent background to the greatest degree possible. This online tool can remove many backgrounds.
  3. Display a clear emotion or purpose
  4. If including text, should be properly sized to be readable
  5. "Evergreen" and not something that will be irrelevant after the next news cycle
  6. Formatted in PNG, GIF, or SVG to make our file optimization cycles easier. If svg initially, send svg in a seperately hosted link to WhyEssEff. Same with gif, as we render them as mp4 IIRC.
  7. Have proposed title as the title of the post, nothing more, nothing less.
  8. Post body should include a suggested category and keywords.
  9. Max height of 3 times the width.

Rules:

  1. No reactionary or reactionary-adjacent expressions. The purpose of an image is what it expresses. Some clear examples for this rule:
    • Allowed: Broken fasces, burning stars-and-bars, rotated Mussolini
    • Disallowed: Body-shaming, Pepes, gay-shaming the enemy (e.g. those pictures of Putin and Trump that libs love to post), certain hateful wojaks (even if recontextualized)
    • If you think you have touched on a grey area, see rule 7 for how to litigate this.
  2. ~~Nothing Vaush-related is allowed~~
    • To be honest, I broke this rule, so it's pretty much moot. Just run it by me first in DMs or matrix. Vaush is a bit of a dead horse, so to speak, so they're still generally discouraged. The qualification for a viable emote referencing his existence is more a matter of execution -- @WhyEssEff
  3. No desecration of religious imagery.
    • This rule does not extend to the subordinate representations of religious symbolism present within the flags and/or iconography of nations, political parties, or militant groups.
  4. Nothing sexually explicit or overtly horny is allowed
    • :hentai-free:
  5. No sectarianism in submissions. Pro-tendency content is fine, but we will not accept content degrading specific tendencies.
  6. No gore, no SA, no sui-bait. Nothing that could reasonably trigger a comrade.
  7. If you think you're touching on a grey area with a submission, message @whyesseff:matrix.org to clear it before you post.
    • DISCLAIMER: Clearing does not necessarily mean that I'll add it, just that it's alright to submit and the rules will not be the barrier to its addition -- @WhyEssEff
  8. No content that breaks the Hexbear Code Of Conduct.
