The fact that you need an account t just to get certain features is why I am still rocking an HP 4050DTN from the prior century.

No subscriptions, no DRM, no artificial limitations on what I can do with it. It’s 100% mine to do with what I want.

The fact that this is necessary is infuriating

Not wholesome.

HP should not be locking features of a printer. You should be able to just do a factory reset and have everything usable.

Forget the corporate hate, this is one human helping another. Always wholesome! Celebrate it!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

right how stupid is it that we are doing email locks on paper printers. which stage of capitalism is this.

[-] [email protected] 55 points 2 days ago

I can sterilize a used syringe found on the street for repeat use but recommend you just keep walking if you find an HP printer.

A free printer saved from becoming waste is a free printer saved from becoming waste, I'm not leaving it behind. The poor printer has no fault that their creators are so evil.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah maybe, but an orc is just an orc. When you're evil, you're evil

HP printers are orcs, and they do behave evil, whether they like to or not

I got a 2013-ish LaserJet from the street, it just needed a better aftermarket cartridge (the one installed was partially clogged and partially leaking but thankfully only on thw paper). Of course, I disabled all its outgoing traffic with a firewall rule.

What printer brand do you recommend for use with Linux?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

100% Brother. The driver support is phenomenal. I could easily set up a scan pipeline so that when I just press a button on the printer, it scans the document and sends it to my server. There in gets processed in a few ways before it's placed on my NAS. Very nerdy and very convenient. I love it.

Usually everyone tells about how amazing Brother printers are in every HP thread. But yes, to answer your question: Brother Laser Printers.

I have 3, there have been rumors that the newer models have moved to DRM for their toner cartridges. But I have yet to confirm this.

Linux sees all the brother printers on my network and can print to all of them without issue.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I came looking for the brother comment. My bw laser is 18 years old, and the toner is about 10. Still works great. USB plug-and-play on Linux.

I've had an Epson EcoTank printer for a few years now, and have never had trouble printing from Linux. And the ink is orders of magnitude cheaper than cartridge-based printers.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

That’s what I have now. Works well.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I have a Brother laser printer and an Epson ink tank. They both work fine with Linux. I had to install some drivers but that was largely painless.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

do brother printers play well with linux? I've had two b/w laserjets for the last 20 years. one at work, one at home. bought them both 20 years ago, they still work great. can still network (computer to wifi router to router to printer. the place i live was wired with cat 5 already when we moved in I WAS SO LUCKY) print on both of them too.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

I’ve had good experiences with Brother printers and Linux.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

ooo, thank you for the input. part of my long-standing hesitancy to fully move the network over to linux is "do my fucking old minifridge sized printers work with the linux easier than with the microsoft" and I have already figured out all the kinks (heh) for my network for microsoft. so far.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

My HP printer from 1998 is working just fine, I got it off the street.

[-] [email protected] -3 points 2 days ago

...especially when it's a stolen repost on a fringe version of Reddit about a used printer.

[-] [email protected] 24 points 2 days ago

One orphan escaped the orphan-crushing machine.

[-] [email protected] 51 points 2 days ago

Obviously fake. HP printers are unrepairable by design.

[-] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago

Older HPs are rock and roll. I have a tiny LaserJet my company gave me. Maybe 15-yo? Cannot kill it, $25 bucks to refill the toner for 1,000 pages. And don't start me on the IIs, IIIs, IVs and Vs. I had a large format (36") from the late 90s that never died, shredded belts and all.

Their fall from grace is one for the IT history books.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

HP now huge in the conferencing world since they bought Poly(com) which is absolutely tragic. HP somehow made them worse

My HP laser all-in-one works better with PS than using the app. I was worried when I switched to Linux but it's way easier and usually never fails to print or scan

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

PS is Photoshop? How'd you get that working on Linux? I was going to give up using Lightroom and finding an open source alternative.

Postscript, a printing language

I've really gotten into crossword puzzles lately and the title so, so reminds me of a crossword clue. Love it.

I remember seeing this on reddit like 5 years ago.

Does this mean my meme folder is fair game too?
