The first tragedy of Lemmy

[-] [email protected] 26 points 1 day ago

The first tragedy was feddit.de dying after the admin got disappeared in North Korea

[-] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago
[-] [email protected] 22 points 1 day ago

It's a popular meme on feddit.org. The admin disappeared on a trip to an unspecified Asian country and the instance died. He hasn't been heard from since, so this is clearly the only logical explanation.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Are we sure he "disappeared on a trip to an unspecified asian country"? Or did he just lost the motivation to run the instance further?

[-] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

No, but that was the last time anyone has heard from him.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago
[-] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago

Nah he was joking. But the admin is still missing, we don't know what happened to him.

If you count kbin as Lemmy then I think that counts. Head dev ran into health problems.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 hours ago

That's where I entered the fediverse. I was there when the question about not pooping for an extended time was asked. Good times. Sad to see kbin is no more.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 hours ago

Mbin is alive and well though!

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago
[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, it's rebranded to Mbin now.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

*forked to Mbin now.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Uh, yeah, that's part of the tragedy, silly! If it was still kbin it'd be because the original dev was still around and okay.

Lemm.ee made me feel welcome and cozy in this new experience that was Lemmy. Admins and users I frequently noticed were chill and seemed to be overall decent folk. Appreciate everyone that made that instance what it was, thank you all and see you around on/from other instances.

so long and thanks for all the ~~fish~~ beans

Shit. I keep forgetting to switch instances again. Any suggestions on a decent replacement?

[-] [email protected] 39 points 2 days ago

Lemmy.zip has a similar federation policy to lemm.ee

[-] [email protected] 34 points 2 days ago

Dbzer0, sopuli, literature.cafe.

[-] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago

Here's what I believe are the top considerations:

  1. See which instances are blocked just add /instances to the end of the site. Like: lemm.ee/instances or sopuli.xyz/instances

  2. Check out the "all" for the instance of that's important to you. Each all is different depending on your instance (it's based on what other users on the instance are doing).

I'm going to flip to PieFed since Voyager now has started beta support. I'll be on piefed.social

I just don't want to go yet...

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

I have a literature.cafe from even before my lemm.ee account, but it doesn’t federate with piefed (at least in any way that I’ve noticed). Several communities I follow switched to piefed so I wasn’t able to see or follow them with literature.cafe

As someone who just switched, this isn't something you should sleep on. I tried another instance and it was insanely slow in comparison. You might need to try a couple of places to get it right.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago

I mean, I don't really know what makes a great instance. Lemmy.ca has never made me regret my decision though?

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

That's because lemmy.ca is a great instance!

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Not .world

I need to switch.

Most of us moved to .zip. Some moved to db0 and piefed.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

I jumped to piedfed.social (and so from lemmy to piefed as well). The admin on my new instance is really great, reminds me of @sunarus back when I started on lemm.ee.

https://piefed.social/

Worth a look, I think, for all the great new features added to piefed, on top of what Lemmy (the server software) offers. Piefed is still compatible with Lemmy and the fediverse in general.

it was a good run.

i was initially drawn to it because of the "ee" reminding me of ee cummings, the poet.

i love science and such so i've drifted on over to mander.xyz

reading through this thread it is newly apparent that all posts and comments will be deleted. :(

see you space cowboy

[-] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

Posts and comments will continue to exist on the instances that were federated with lemm.ee

They should stay on other federated instances, except if they're explicitly removed as long as the instance is still online.

I was going to make this but put sunaurus's mustache in there somewhere. Anyway, thanks for being my first!

Join PieFed! It's nice and it's currently booming right now! A lot of posts on Reddit promoting it so we'll get a lot of new users. We already have a lot of communities on PieFed.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

I went for sh.itjust.works

Seems okay for now. Just remember to export your settings. Then you can easily try a few other instances.

if you guys hate .world so much then why are y'all always here?

Hopefully at some point in the future the issue of instances dissapearing won't be as big of a deal
