It's exactly like that Star Trek TNG episode "Cause and Effect", in which the Enterprise gets caught in a "temporal causality loop", and is constantly repeating the events that lead to its destruction until they manage to break out of the loop. 
I was there at the top bit, it was overrated. Just a lot of hot gas
