DES MOINES, Iowa (KWWL) - A resolution was introduced in the Iowa Senate Wednesday that asks the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a ruling that guarantees the right to same-sex

I'm queer, and fortunately in the UK. But this still fucking hurts and scares me, mainly because of how it'll effect the community in the US but also for me.

Lgbt people in the US can see these headlines and end up living in denial about there sexuality, living lies, being miserable and sometimes even killing themselves. Anti gay people feel vindicated by this shit, and say and do things to LGBT people they meet.

For myself, it influences the bigots through the world. Even in my professional workplace there's colleagues that aren't positive about it. We can get targeted for bullying or worse.

It's just so sad

… I’m waiting for interracial marriage to also come up… were regressing at lightning speed.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

How exactly does Iowa have standing for such a claim? In 2009 the Iowa Supreme court affirmed that the right to marry (gay or otherwise) was enshrined in the state constitution. Even if SCOTUS made such a ruling at the federal level, it wouldn't change the state constitution.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 hours ago

Standing is an antiquated concept at this point. Particularly when it comes to attacking queer rights. They can do whatever they want.

In this case they're joining a number of other states in trying to overturn Obergefell, they're flat out ignoring Varnum and the state situation.

Now for black, Hispanic, Asian and women's right.

The new fuck the Hispanic, Black, Asian, and women's rights Bill.

Jesus: everybody love each other. That’s it that’s the whole thing.

American Christians: what a ninny. We’re not doing that.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

No, their minds are more warped than that. They claim they are loving others by acting the way they do. From their point of view, the fate of our eternal souls is far more valuable than the feelings of a fleshy body. To them, it's love to keep gays from marrying, to deny trans peoples' identities, to force kids and women to give birth to their rapist's babies... Etc... That's all Christian Love.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 43 minutes ago

No hate like Christian love

Aziraphale and Crowley looking at Jesus during the crucifixion.

Crowley: What was it he said that got everyone so upset?

Aziraphale: “Be kind to each other.”

Crowley: Oh, yeah. That'll do it.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

In fairness, the thing he said that got everyone upset was "I am the King of Kings, abandon all your worldly ties and join me on a pilgrimage to the capital city of the Levant. I will fulfill the ancient prophecy of a new independent Jewish state blessed by the One True God who may or may not also be me, we'll sort that out in another 300 years."

But the "Good Omens" line makes for better dark comedy.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I mean it’s all a magical story about a dude who didn’t exist at all probably.

But the “teachings” exist.

Yet the American Christian resists the message but embraces the magic.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 16 hours ago

it’s all a magical story about a dude who didn’t exist at all probably

No shortage of self-proclaimed messiahs and apocalyptic prophets running around Jerusalem 2,000 years ago. Less a question of whether Jesus existed than which one you're talking about.

American Christian resists the message but embraces the magic.

That's hardly an American thing. All the Abrahamic religions and the pagan ones, too, were obsessed with the magical realism of their personal mythologies.

Neither were people blind, deaf, and dumb to the social message of the gospels. But people do lose sight of them as you become less like a 1st century apostle and more like a 1st century Pharasise.

35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?

27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 hours ago

I don't understand the part about Mary and Martha.

The cheeseburger thing is rabbinical law.

It doesn’t say you can’t have a cheeseburger anywhere in any of those books.

It says “don’t cook a baby goat in its mother milk”

Rabbis extrapolated that to be : no cheeseburgers

[–] [email protected] 9 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

And they also decided "do no work on the Sabbath" also meant "don't push the buttons on the microwave."

Or that if you circle your city with a wire, that counts as your city limits for purposes of traveling on the Sabbath.

Point is, rabbinical law has always been about finding the loopholes because they consider it a mark of godliness.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

You can do things in your home.

Anything inside your fence is your home.

Magic wire is a fence, and everything inside is part of the home.

God hates this one weird trick.

There's no love quite like Christian hate.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Jesus: Everybody love each other. That’s it that’s the whole thing.

American Christians: Okay, okay. That's cool... uh, but not f*gs right?

Jesus: Did I fucking stutter?

This is not how SCOTUS decisions are handled. State legislatures passing resolutions (Oklahoma did this, too, right?) shouldn't be relevant to the Court at all. Of course, Thomas may well pen a response outlining exactly what fascists would need to do to get a winning case before the Court, as a treat.

Anyway, while this is painfully stupid, and certainly a test balloon, this carries zero weight whatsoever. We are in bizzaroland, though, so who knows.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 18 hours ago

There isn't really a mechanism for the court to take up a case without an actual case. Of course, it's only a matter of time before Liberty or some other conservative outlet gins up a manufactured victim of gay marriage to bring before the court since this court has established that standing can be purely fictional (as long as it's for conservative causes) and precedent doesn't matter.

Log cabin Republicans about to get their whole damn head eaten, but not in a fun way.

[–] [email protected] 39 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Nothing better to do then this?

Trying to decide who gets to have a government approved contract for the thing people are going to do anyways?

What a bunch of do nothing waste of time assholes.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 21 hours ago

It’s all very “We’re miserable, so you have to be too.”

[–] [email protected] 14 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Yes but if they weren't spending all their time oppressing minority groups they'd have to solve actual problems and that's hard.

From the text of the resolution:

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly of the State of Iowa rejects the decision of Obergefell v. Hodges ; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the General Assembly of the State of Iowa calls upon the Supreme Court of the United States to reverse the Obergefell decision, and restore the natural definition of marriage, a union of one man and one woman...

Does the Supreme Court even have the power to reverse a previous decision without a new case revisiting the issue?

And doesn’t it violate the separation of powers in multiple respects for a state legislature to tell the Supreme Court how to interpret the federal constitution?

[–] [email protected] 19 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

What Republicans have come to realize (and Democrats refuse to accept) is that you can just DO THINGS at the executive level. And if the bureaucrats follow along, then you've functionally established new policy.

The Iowa legislature can pass a rule saying "No more issuing marriage contracts to gay couples" and the state courts can say "Okay, we'll stop doing that and we'll also stop recognizing existing contracts", and all the low level county officials can just ignore the legal status of gay married families and then private businesses can follow suit. And then that's it. No SCOTUS decision is going to pay out on insurance benefits claims to a legally de-certified no-longer-spouse.

On the flip side, the Iowa legislature can author this act and the people of Iowa can rise up in protest and say "Fuck you, we won't do what you tell us." Private businesses can continue to honor marriage contracts. Low level bureaucrats can continue to treat gay couples as married. Mid-level bureaucrats can defend and promote them. High level bureaucrats who continue to force these abhorrent laws on people can be removed from office.

The problem is that... the fish rots from the head. More likely than not, we're seeing this push because Iowa's basket of deplorable plutocrats want to expand the number of minorities they can piss and shit all over. Just like how DOGE gutted the "Woke" federal bureaucracy, I suspect we're going to see Iowa state leadership tearing the spine out of any state or local government agency that refuses to accept gay rights are expired.

Do you have the courage to stand up to your boss? Do you have the support of your friends and coworkers to call a strike in a business that singles out the LGBTQ folks who work there? Will you march on your city council and demand they take your side or get out of the way? Will you march on your state house? Will you stare down a bunch of bigots in badges when you do it?

This is a big ask and its not easy to find enough folks willing to stand up for what is right.

How about we just stop honoring Republicans' right to marriage? They're all abusers anyway so it'd probably save some people's lives.

Abolish and criminalize religion

[–] [email protected] 14 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Instead of giving the state another avenue for oppression, what if we label religion as the disease that it is and work with mental health professionals to develop a treatment for it?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

This could easily turn into another avenue for oppression. "Desginate x a mental illness and treat it" doesn't necessarily turn out any better than "Put all the practitioners of x in the gulag." So really you need to focus on overthrowing the authoritarians who want to oppress people.

This is what they want more tolerance of, their bigotry. They're the ones dividing people and saying certain people shouldn't be treated with dignity. We need freedom from religion.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 20 hours ago

Bigotry is the only thing they seem to want tolerance of.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Iowa is so close to flipping blue. This is not going to stop that. This will never pass, but we always knew the geriatric old bitches in the GOP were going to try and bring it here.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Don't take anything for granted. Texas has been on the verge of going blue for years but people don't show up for midterms and the GOP has been doing their best to make the state unlivable unless you just enjoy suffering or watching others suffer. They'll also make any excuse to make voting harder unless you're in a rural county.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

Texas has been on the verge of going blue for years but people don’t show up for midterms

They are under new management at least. Hinojosa is out after being a boat anchor since 2012. The new guy is allegedly to his left, but I don't do optimism about democrats anymore.
