Was a cabin up in the mountains that had large tin can lids nailed all over one side because the pileated woodpeckers would peck out huge holes to stick acorns in.

Always a treat to get a glimpse of one of these. They really do look prehistoric with that huge crest. And the amount of noise they can make when they are drilling trees is impressive also.

Dryocopus and the phenotypically similar Campephilus are my favorite bird genera, I love these guys!

Great spotting, I never get to see any of them near me.
