I've wanted to cover Myanmar for a while now but haven't had the needed knowledge to write much more than "This situation really sucks." After doing a little reading on the situation, I feel even more confused. A decent analogy is the Syrian Civil War, at least while Assad was in power (though it's still pretty true today) - many different opposition groups, some co-operating with the United States, others not. The main government supported partially by an anti-American superpower, but who could live with that government collapsing if there are deals to be made with the group coming into power. A conflict kept going and exploited at least partially by the United States and other imperial core powers, though with plenty of genuine domestic animosity and desires for political independence.

Recently, the Myanmar government - the mainstream media uses "junta", which is probably accurate despite the connotations - has promised elections at the end of 2025. This doesn't seem likely to happen, and even if it did, how this would work in a country as war-torn as Myanmar is unclear. The government is losing territory and soldiers at a quick pace; they now hold only 21% of the country, though that 21% does at least comprise many of the cities. It's difficult to get a handle on the number of people affected because civil wars and insurgencies have been ongoing in some shape or form for decades, but we're talking at least millions displaced and thousands of civilians killed.

Here's a comment by @[email protected] from fairly recently that covers the situation in Myanmar:

comment

The military government of Myanmar is losing to the Rebel Groups, and badly. https://www.voanews.com/a/myanmar-s-rebels-closing-in-around-junta-into-fifth-year-of-civil-war-/7958145.html

somethings really afoot though, news about myanmar from western outlets and channels have suddenly all remembered myanmar exists and written quite a lot about them in the last few days. Its suspicious, it could be capitalists trying to signal their want for US involvement in the civil war. It could also be a targeted propaganda campaign already pre planned in order to make sure people are clued into the conflict.

I think this seems to be another Assad situation. The Military government is pretty unpopular domestically and is losing quite a bit of ground. I would be surprised if they lasted to 2027. Supplied by both Russia and China, theyve been able to keep some flow of weapons, but are suffering a lot from manpower issues. Conscription has been enacted, but conscripts are a poor replacement for trained soldiers. According to reports, they only hold about 21% of the land and are losing lots of territory. They also have extended their emergency rule for another 6 months, throwing doubt on the ability to follow through with their 2025 election. They've lost large amounts of territory, thousands of soldiers, and 2 regional commands. They're not dead yet though, as they have some ability to retake some territory and win some battles, but again 21%. Rebels currently are making steady progress towards the second largest city in the country.

while I don't like the rebels, they are western aligned, they have popular support and are allied to many of Myanmar's ethnic minority defence groups. Im wondering who really has the power in this situation though, since many of the gains seem to be made by the Ethnic armies, not the NUG. This revolutionary energy could be fueled to establish a socialist federation, but won't, and the popular revolutionary energy is fueled toward the NUG. It'll probably be another pro-west bourgeoisie democracy. It will probably then turn against the ethnic rebels and we'll end up basically where myanmar was pre coup. Probably will have a strong military influence on politics as well, since the rebel forces seem to be made up of officers and very little political groups. By then, people will be extremely tired of war and more likely to accept any conflict resolution than another civil war. In the midst of "It Happened" stands a stronger, unmovable "nothing ever happens". Would be neat if the Communist Party of Burma could somehow come out on top, but they have only around 1000 soldiers and don't control a large amount of territory.

China's interests in the region are still secure, but siding with the Junta is a bad idea, one I understand though. China doesn't want a western aligned power to take over a china aligned state, and is trying to make sure their economic investments in the area are protected and their mineral income is continued. They have deep ties with many Ethnic Minority states, especially on their border, and the NUG forces, mostly again to protect infrastructure investments and keep the minerals flowing. They might flip back to the NUG as the Junta starts collapsing over the next year or so, especially since the new US administration seems to be really cutting back on foreign aid. The General in charge of the rebel government forces complained quite a bit about how much aid ukraine got and how much he wanted that aid. He was basically begging for anti aircraft systems "like in ukraine" lol. China could definitely swoop in and back the rebels, which while hurting their reputation, is probably the best move long term. China's only interest is to keep Myanmar from being pro-west, keep control of Myanmar's mineral flow, and protect other investments in the area.

USDA cuts leaving West Michigan food bank in state of unease

article

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Local food banks and schools are facing ongoing uncertainty as federal cuts take shape across the country.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has nixed more than $1 billion in funding for local food banks and schools by ending buy-local programs that help buy and distribute goods produced within the state or within 400 miles of the location, The Hill reported Tuesday.

The funding cuts are impacting places in West Michigan. Feeding America West Michigan’s President and CEO Ken Estelle told News 8 on Wednesday about 27 trucks of food ordered from USDA are now in limbo.

We are looking at potentially a million dollars of food that has been paused,” Estelle said.  “There would be probably over two million meals of food that would not, that we were planning on getting even in the next three to four months so it’s a lot of impact.”

Estelle said FAWM’s current inventory will last them about a month but past that will be another story.

One of the nonprofit’s services is mobile food banks. On Wednesday, one was held at Godwin Heights High School, with dozens in line ready to pick up their food. One of those people was Ruth Bever, who told News 8 she has relied on these services for month

“Its not like I am super desperate but it really helps get over the hump because we don’t get food stamps and it just really helps so you don’t feel super desperate,” Bever said.

Now Estelle said the nonprofit is playing the waiting game and trying to plan ahead as much as it can, as the fate of this funding remains uncertain.

“We are still waiting to hear on what is actually going to happen. We are hopeful that things will maybe get reviewed, and these programs get restarted or turned back on but until we know we are looking at what options we have to fill in that gap,” he said.

The former President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili has been sentenced to 9 years in prison on embezzling charges He fled Georgia in 2013 when his presidential term ended and moved to Ukraine where he would eventually serve as an advisor to President Zelensky. In October 2021 he returned to Georgia and called for protests against the government where he was promptly arrested on his fugitive warrant.

Saakashvili did cozy up to Bush.

However it's a complete oversimplification. Saakashvili has a specific grift that appeals mainly to Eastern European liberals. The anti-corruption guy (who is actually corrupt). Similar examples are Poroshenko. Saakashvili enriched himself in plenty of ways in Ukraine and Georgia. In Ukraine he was stripped of citizenship and deported by Porosh because they're the same guy and Saakashvili stepped out of line and tried to use their only weapon against Porosh. Most of these guys if they actually do anything about corruption is they'll do cleanups of petty corruption mostly by forcing a party line on local bureaucrats to stop trading favors.

Saakashvili's grift is practically only possible due to the existence of USAID money that creates anti-corruption organizations that will never actually accomplish their goals in Eastern European countries. The problem with these orgs is that they fall into 3 broad flavors, anti-corruption corruption guys (Saakashvili had his own org like this), true believers, and political wreckers. Ironically it's impossible to tell the difference between the 3 on tactics alone because the tactics are the same. A common example is in Ukraine most of these orgs are against sourcing laws. Sourcing laws are a normal thing for most capitalist countries to have to bouy their local economies, where a % of the government's spend on government functions has to purchase goods/services from the country itself. The anti-corruption NGO party line on sourcing laws in Ukraine is that it will allow self-dealing / unfair dealing/ corruption via grants or bidding processes.

Ukraine and Georgia have a history of trading corrupt guys back and forth across the border. The guy who Saakashvili imprisoned on corruption charges that lead to the 2007 riots and his abdication also went back and forth between Georgia and Ukraine in a political capacity. Unlike Saakashvili, Okruashvili joined the Ukraine defense forces against Russia.

Intel appoints chip industry veteran Lip-Bu Tan as CEO

March 12 (Reuters) - Intel (INTC.O), opens new tab on Wednesday named former board member and chip industry veteran Lip-Bu Tan as its CEO and signaled the struggling but storied chipmaker was unlikely to split up its chip-design and manufacturing operations.

The appointment, effective March 18, comes three months after Intel ousted CEO and company veteran Pat Gelsinger, whose costly and ambitious plan to turn the company around was faltering and sapping investor confidence.

Tan, a former Intel board member, had been seen as a CEO contender thanks to his deep experience in the chip industry as well as a longtime technology investor in promising startups. He was approached by Intel's board in December to gauge his interest in taking up the job, Reuters had reported.

"Together, we will work hard to restore Intel's position as a world-class products company, establish ourselves as a world-class foundry and delight our customers like never before," Tan said in a letter to Intel employees on Wednesday.

Tan, 65, is a Malaysian-born executive who grew up in Singapore and holds degrees in physics, nuclear engineering and business administration.

He served as CEO of Intel supplier and chip-design software Cadence Design Systems (CDNS.O), opens new tab from 2009 to 2021. During his term, the company's revenue and stock surged.

Tan left Intel's board last year over disagreements on how to turn around the company. He grew frustrated by the company’s large workforce, its approach to contract manufacturing and Intel’s risk-averse and bureaucratic culture, Reuters previously reported.

Tan will rejoin the board, Intel said.

Tan "brings stability and experience to a role that needs someone of his caliber, which is why I believe the company will likely stay the course with his appointment and continue to develop foundry and product," said Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.

Tan's appointment comes as Trump pushes for more manufacturing in the country, threatening tariffs on imports that have roiled global markets for weeks. While Trump has made no direct comment about Intel publicly, he has said that Asian countries including Taiwan have snatched away the United States' edge in chipmaking.

If anyone is wondering where Steve Witkoff is after his no show in the bilateral negotiations between the USA and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia: It turns out he didn't fly with the government delegation, he flew on his own private plane to Abu Dhabi, UAE; and never made it to Saudi Arabia, which is why his reserved seat in Saudi Arabia was empty. Witkoff then flew to Doha, Qatar; to negotiate with the mediators of the hostage exchange agreement between Hamas and Israel. This coincided with Trump saying that Palestinians will not be forcefully removed from the Gaza Strip. So some sort of agreement was reached there.

As for where Witkoff is now, this is the big news: Witkoff has flown to Moscow, Russia; as of a few hours ago, to present the ceasefire proposal for the Russia - Ukraine war and negotiate with the Russian delegation and Vladimir Putin. This is Witkoff's second trip to Russia, the first was to begin negotiations in February where the prisoner exchange for Marc Fogel was arranged as a gesture of goodwill. So this second trip now is the big negotiation, the fate of the 30 day freeze on the current frontline, and any immediate concessions to Russia, depends on the outcome of this negotiation. Witkoff is Trump's enforcer and there are no other US delegates present, so this is coming right from the top from a US perspective. And the Russian delegation has said that the final decision is with Vladimir Putin. So it's effectively a one to one negotiation between Trump and Putin, with Trump sending his right hand man to carry out the work of negotiating for him.

Putin has given his opening statement before meeting Witkoff, during a press conference with the Belarusian delegation during Lukashenko's visit to the Kremlin. I just watched it. ~~If anyone has a full video link, feel free to provide it in the replies.~~ Full 7:30 video of Putin's response, with English subtitles

In summary:

Russia agreas with plans to end hostilities long term, as long as they adress the root causes that caused the conflict to start in the first place and lead to a permanent peace.

Putin is in favour of a 30 day truce, as long as the following conditions/nuances are worked out:

  • Sorting out the situation with Ukrainian remnants in the Kursk region, they either have to "surrender or die". The Kursk salient is under complete Russian fire control, so retreat is not possible. Therefore, is Russia supposed to just left them go back to Ukraine, even though they've committed crimes against Russian civilians?

  • Russia has questions if Ukraine will use the 30 day truce to mobilise their army, recruit/conscript and train soldiers, or rearm, or if nothing of the sort will be allowed. If Ukraine is not allowed to mobilise and arm itself during the 30 day truce, who controls that?

  • Russia wants clarity on where exactly the freeze across the frontlines will take place and when it will be implemented, given Russia is currently advancing on the frontlines. In other words, how much longer will Russia be allowed to advance for before the freeze is in place. Where will the demarcation line be?

  • Russia has questions on how the ceasefire will be policed and who will enforce it across the +-2000km frontline. Who will determine any potential ceasefire violations, and what the consequences of violating the ceasefire will be? Both sides will have to research this.

  • Russia supports a peaceful end to the war in general, but many issues have to be discussed. Maybe in a phonecall with President Trump.

Putin is in favour of a 30 day truce, as long as the following conditions/nuances are worked out:

In my opinion, this is just Putin trying to avoid looking like the bad guy by refusing a ceasefire. Ukraine will obviously not accept a 30 day pause on recruitment and rearmament. Even if they did, it would be obvious that they were lying.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I actually misunderstood that part. On rewatching, Putin says that Russia has questions if Ukraine will use the 30 day truce to rearm or not, and if not, who will control that on the Ukrainian side? Obviously Russia would prefer that they do not rearm. There's actually no mention of guarantees. I've provided a link to Putin's full answer so you can watch it yourself, I don't hear any mention of guarantees on a rewatch.

To me it reads very much as "yes we can do a ceasefire, but these are our interests and areas of concern, we can't do a ceasefire without addressing them". Ukraine is Ukraine, they'll be Slava Ukraini till the end under Zelensky. But that doesn't matter much, the party with the real power is the United States, and they will get Ukraine to agree to what they want. A freeze on recruitment and armament is probably unrealistic if the ceasefire is only viewed as a temporary thing. But that shouldn't be of large concern if the point of this ceasefire is to open negotiations for ending the war permanently.

What's interesting is no mention of de-militirisation or the occupied territories.

Putin is a hell of a troll after all. First, he responds to Trump's proposal for a truce with the words of a famous joke about "there is a nuance" (everyone knows it, we won't repeat it). I wonder if Trump's translators are that advanced.

Then he keeps Witkoff in the anteroom for eight hours, forcing him to wait out his meeting with Lukashenko, a press conference with Lukashenko, and lunch with Lukashenko. While Witkoff marinates in the waiting room, Kremlin websites publish the menu for lunch with Batka, all these veal cheeks and cucumber rolls. All this time, the Americans wait, dangling their legs.

Then Putin suddenly pulls Zelensky, hanging him in a dilemma: Russia agrees to spare the soldiers slammed in Kursk, if Zelensky gives the order to surrender (he orders to surrender = shamefully screwed up, caved in to Putin, he doesn’t order = a murderer, condemning thousands of people to death and the hardships of captivity, take your pick).

Beautiful, huh.

From the news yesterday:

"We are for it. But there is a nuance," Putin said of a 30-day ceasefire during a press briefing. "First, what are we going to do with the encirclement in the Kursk region?"

For those who are unaware, “but there is a nuance” was a very popular Soviet joke about Vasily Ivanovich Chapaev.

Popularized by the 1934 film Chapaev by the Vasilyev brothers, which followed a fictionalized account of Chapaev’s story alongside his aide Petka, and his girlfriend Anka the Machine Gunner, these three characters had since been elevated into folk figures in the Soviet culture and spawned an entire collection of Soviet/Russian jokes, often about the absurdities of everyday life. According to the wikipedia article, Putin said in 2014 that Chapaev is his favorite film of all time.

obscene and possibly inappropriate

Petka asks Chapaev: "Vasily Ivanovich, what is this nuance?"

Chapaev: - Take off your pants, Petka, I'll show you.

Petka, somewhat perplexed, takes off his pants.

Chapaev comes up from behind and shoves it in, clearly what, clearly where, and explains: - Look, Petka, - it seems like you have a dick in your ass, and I have a dick in my ass... But! There is one nuance...

'We are holding slaves': "Israeli" soldier reveals systematic use of Palestinian 'human shields' in Gaza | The Cradle

“In Gaza, human shields are used at least six times a day. If the Military Police want to do their job seriously, they should open at least 2,190 investigations. But the MP just want to pretend to the world that we're investigating ourselves, so they find a few scapegoats and pin everything on them,” the soldier stated, following nine months of combat in the strip.

He explained that Palestinian civilians were forced to enter homes in Gaza to check for Hamas fighters or explosives and make sure it was safe for the soldiers to enter themselves. The soldiers refer to Palestinians forced to clear homes in this way as “Shawish” or “slaves.”

Sometimes, Shawish are sent to houses simply to set fire to or blow up the house.
