While illegal crossings from Canada have increased in recent years, they are still nowhere near the levels seen at the southern border. Furthermore, the migration flow is not one-sided. In 2023, the last year for which we have statistics at the moment, more people crossed illegally from the United States into Canada than in the opposite direction.

In Fiscal Year 2024, USCBP seized 21,148 pounds of fentanyl at the southwest border, mostly smuggled from Mexico. In contrast, only 43 pounds were intercepted at the northern border. This means that less than 1% of all fentanyl seizures occurred at the U.S.-Canada border.

Yeah, no shit. Not justified by literally anything and everyone knows that.

It’s justified by Putin Kompromat.

Trump's actions aren't justified by Kompromat on this level, they're only justified by plain willingness. I don't know if the upside for Trump is that he sees things getting so bad, he can then in the 3rd year remove all the tarriffs thereby flooding the US economy with new growth to justify a 3rd terms, or what, but this is way way beyond fear of being "outted" by Putin for anything all, this is pure unadulterated destruction for it's own sake. The Kompramat idea justifies small moves like cutting off Ukraine, it doesn't justify 25% tarrifs for Canada and shutting down USAID. I think it's safe to say at this point Trump is doing all of this to bolster Russia, but it's not because he's being threatened, it's because in his small fascist mind, it will benefit him, his kids, and his friends in some way.

It destroys the international reputation of the US. That seems well in line with Russia’s objectives.

It all benefits Russia, no doubt, I wholeheartedly agree, but on this level, it's not Kompramat, this is whole body full extension destruction that speaks to a larger more selfish agenda

  1. Scrap NAFTA for your own marginally better trade agreement during first presidency
  2. Manage not to fuck anything up for 4 years because you’re not president
  3. Immediately fuck up your own trade agreement that YOU FOUGHT FOR because of reasons that exist entirely in your own imagination
  4. ???
  5. Hopefully die of a heart attack

the only reason I can come up with why Trump did this is to weaken the united states, and it's allies, to somehow bolster russia's position. that's it. that's all i can come up with. you don't make people like pete hegseth the head of the dod, and tulsi gabbard the dni if you want a secure funtioning christofascist state. hegseth managed to oversee the pentagon for less than one week, and in that week a us army helicopter, for the first time in history, flew directly into the descending flight path of a commercial passenger jet airplane killing everyone. this is bigger than just destroying the economy, which is going to throw us all into financial hardship, after years of insane inflation post pandemic, this is to litteraly weaken the united states readiness in every way. i don't see him reversing this.
