People, Trump promised he was going to do something about this, but you all voted for President Musk anyway.

If the birds weren't kept in such horrifically constricted locations, many millions wouldn't need to die.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 6 hours ago

Ok yeah but have you considered how better treatment would affect their profit margins?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 hours ago

If they gave the birds good living conditions eggs would be very expensive.

Here's an idea - maybe, just maybe - factory farming at scale to feed the SAD is something that won't end well for humans either? I mean, beyond the health problems it already causes...

[–] [email protected] 16 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I only know SAD as meaning seasonal affective disorder. What do you mean it as?

[–] [email protected] 18 points 10 hours ago (3 children)

SAD=Standard American Diet.

In other words, eating wayyyy too much meat (and eggs/dairy) and very low on fruits and vegetables:

California chiming in: Trumpy just wasted 5 billion gallons of water earmarked for fruits, veg, rice and nuts.

Expect that to be an issue this summer too.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

I figure that was purposeful sabotage, but it's also possible donvict is just really that stupid.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 hour ago

Why not both?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 hour ago

No way. He's got smart people with him. They know exactly what this is gonna entail. They're speed running the fall of America now. They're blitzing it asap before a resistance can form.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 9 hours ago

Irrigation in California is even more so used for growing animal feed. It will be a larger problem for the dairy and beef industries

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I feel like eggs are a part of most peoples diet. It's in like 90% of Chinese dishes you see on social media

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 hours ago

Yes, it seems like many countries top us for egg consumption. It's probably because much of the SAD is about consuming so much other animal protein (often marketed as a health food, lol, because "protein") besides eggs, so maybe they take a back seat in this unhealthy lifestyle.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Ah, thanks for clarifying. Never heard it used that way.

Yeah, seems Wikipedia now redirects from SAD -> Western pattern diet. Not sure when that came into use, but SAD is something you'd see fairly frequently on some corners of the 'net...or in places like government sites, though who knows how long they'll be up:

Whelp, guess it was nice having chickens while we did.

Somebody better figure out a way to make crickets seem appetizing, ASAP. Otherwise, things might start to get pretty dire around here.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 hours ago

Don't need crickets, use plants! There's already some good communities here on lemmy

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 hours ago

LOL, well, as someone that has not eaten chicken in ages and ages, not eating chicken does not mean resorting to eating crickets. Plenty of other options, some with a very, very long shelf life if you keep it away from pests and so on....

Where’s the RNA vaccine for livestock?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I wonder if it would work to administer at that kind of scale? Or maybe they only have so much and are keeping it in reserve for humans for now?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 hours ago (3 children)

Is there a vaccine for humans against this kind of flu? And will Trump and RFK Jr. ban it and sell Trump Bleach pills instead?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

He won't ban it. RFK is fine if vaccines cause autism in chickens. As long as he gets to study their skulls.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 hours ago

For H5N1, it seems there are a few vaccines for humans (in addition to vaccinations for poultry):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H5N1_vaccine

Some vaccines also exist for use in humans, and others are in testing. As of July 2024 these include Aflunov, Celldemic and Seqirus/Audenz.[8][9]

...but it seems the RNA ones are not in production yet?

https://aspr.hhs.gov/H5N1/Pages/mRNA-FAQ.aspx

Hasn't been updated in a while, might as well read it before it gets scrubbed...

I'm picturing an assembly line worker putting a Brainwormz-branded UV tube up the asses of chickens as they go by on a conveyor belt...maybe it will align their chakras at the same time and spritz them with essential oils...
