How about you just pay enough that working on your shitty farm is a desirable job for people who aren't desperate?

The people saying this stuff have no idea what the fuck they are talking about. Someone who has no background in faming is just useful to some degree. He can do the stuff that's easy as hell and where you don't have the potential to fuck up really badly or where you don't have to think that much. The biggest problem is, that this is just a fraction of the actual work. Depending on the type of farm and the location theres a lot of work they can't do. Doing stuff on the fields with a tractor? Depending on what they are doing this is nothing that someone who doesn't even has a proper driving license/knowledge can do. All things that require good accuracy are not doable for someone without a certain skill set because, surprisingly, its quite hard to seed, when the machine is wider than the tractor. The bigger the machine gets the harder it is if you font want to waste a lot of time because you either miss half of the field or always drive with 1m overlap.

Next thing is training. No one wants to constantly retrain the entire workforce every year. This just takes valuable time that could be used otherwise.

Next is safety. You can't let someone with no good knowledge/experience do a lot of the stuff alone, since it isn't that cool if they are regularly encountering accidents because they are fucking stupid. Theres a reason why it regularly happens that people encounter horrible Accidents in the farming sector and flooding the sector with untrained personnel won't help.

Also, I kinda doubt that there is even enough work to do for this kind of u trained workers. There have been labour shortages in certain factors, so the farmers adapted by filling the gaps with technology to make farming more efficient.

Every citizen must do one year of (some random job I like).

AKA, "spending 90% of your time and effort retraining new short-time recruits and never actually getting anything done."

[–] [email protected] 13 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Especially these days, where farming is not just repeatedly whacking a hoe into the ground, but instead a massive industrialized and technologically heavy process

[–] [email protected] 3 points 19 hours ago

Oh, and I forgot the expense and hassle of transporting people from all over hell and creation to the farms, and then back again for these short terms. And feeding them and putting them up somewhere, too.

Yeah, this whole idea is totally feasible...

Also, you need people that are able, and allowed to, drive tractors and other heavy machineries. Being good at driving these big machines takes a lot of time and you devinetively dont want to lose multiple grands because some idiot isn't able to drive properly and crashed into something. The next thing is speed. Being comfortable enough to do certain things with an acceptable speed, again, takes time.

It's this.

In Germany, we have the so-called horse shoe theory: very left and very right politics share similar approaches, maybe motivated from different ideas. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_theory

This explains a lot in German left politics (BSW)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

IMO the horseshoe theory isn't as accurate as the fishhook theory.

Not that any of this is at all meaningful. It's literally just pictures.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 12 hours ago

That makes no sense to me. Are you saying the far right is actually centrist?

[–] [email protected] 41 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I wonder what mechanisms, legal or otherwise, they have in mind to exempt rich white people from such responsibilities.

They will manage a farm and crack the whip ofc.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Puhlease.

They fully intend to sit on porches drinking mint juleps.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 day ago

It's not a communist idea because Hitler did that too. And if Hitler did it, it must be OK, right?

The Venn diagram of the cultural revolution and MAGA is the same as a picture of a total eclipse...

Just like far right Christian fundamentalists, far right Islamist fundemtalists, and far right Jewish fundementalists all want basically the same laws, they just want to be the ones in power.

They squabble over details, but in general their end goals are identical

My "moderately conservative" Jewish relatives accidentally quote Nazis recently. Pointing that out makes them very upset. Apparently it's my fault when they say Nazi-things.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

Well stated.

It’s ok to skip past democracy and human rights as long as it’s my awesome philosophy being forced on the unwilling.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Surely the free market will solve this labor problem.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

It did, but the solution was too brown

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

Uk Tories tried to bring in national service but with enough money we could pay to avoid getting drafted. Essentially national service for the poor.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

Authoritarian nationalists all end up sounding the same..

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Always has been

I'm fine with this. I'm also fine with a mandatory year of military service. FORCE people to live how the other half lives. Be a lot less whining and crying, from both sides, if we all had common, and difficult, experiences.

Do it like Starship Troopers (the book). There's a place for everyone to serve, no matter their abilities. Won't serve your country for a lousy year? Fuck you, no franchise.

Nothing like shared hardship to get people singing from the same sheet. It's how every military since forever has done it.

EDIT: So, no one read Starship Troopers? Want to vote? Serve. How to serve? Any way you are capable. You don't have to be a soldier, or even serve in the military.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 22 hours ago

Do it like Starship Troopers (the book).

Bro you can just say "I think fascism is a great idea" at that point.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago

The moment you force anything on your citizens, you are no longer a free country. Forced labor is slavery. Forced military service is nothing less.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Oh no, no no no. Because then they simply choose who serves.
