The favellas in the early portion of the film…. Were they built sets or did they travel somewhere rural?

favelas are urban, they are usually built inside cities.

Have you seen the movie? They are building a township at the edge of Rio in the 60s/70s. It looks like a desert.

cidade de deus was built inside the city of rio de janeiro, in jacarepagua, an urban district that was already populated.

the movie is right in that it wasnt as densely packed (both in and out of the CDD), but rio de janeiro is a 500ish year old city that used to be our capital and was already big by the 60s. by that time we would already have built plenty of city in that region.

ive never been in there but some favelas do give me the vibes of a small town inside a metropolis, so maybe that was an intentional aesthetic choice by the filmmakers.

(or maybe you are right and im completely butchering the city's history)

Iirc, they filmed in a small neighborhood named Guaratiba (Rio de Janeiro), I think the place was called Nova Sepetiba. I know that the city of Rio has the biggest studios for filming in all of Brazil since most Brazilian series and soup operas are filmed there in fake cities. During the late 1990's - early 2000's they couldn't record in the actual City of God due to how instable the Gang wars against each other and the Police was.

I saw it with a college friend who later hooked up with my best friend but later cheated on him and got him two STDs, what do you think about it?

A Raul Seixas song is featured in the film, why does he seem so well liked compared to much better Brazilian musicians?

Never seen it. What is it about? What was the inspiration?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

YOU HAVE TO. One of the best films.
