This is what West Wing brain gets you. The behind the scenes report about Biden was that he said he was going to help Israel without any consideration for how it would hurt his approval ratings, or whether Netanyahu would even show gratitude, because it was The Right Thing to Do ™. He probably pictured himself as Jed Bartlett and came his slacks while saying that, and now he's finally in a refractory period, sitting in the mess he's made on himself.

Biden's far too old to have ever seen The West Wing. That's an Obama staffer thing. But he for sure is huffing the same civil religion that Andy Sorkin was cooking.

Mr president sir have you seen the West Wing

biden-rember you bet fat, I was here when we built it!

[-] Tunnelvision@hexbear.net 22 points 2 years ago

Biden is old enough that he’s one of the people who codified aspects of the civil religion unironically.

I remember him doing a sketch with Julia Louis Dreyfus as Selina Meyer. I wonder who he thought she was in his head.

lmao why, do they not know what's gonna happen? bibi's going to get up there and bitch and moan that there's still money that the US isn't giving Israel and that other countries have said some very very mean things about the genocide they're doing

I think they're only worried about the protest, I've been hearing it could be bigger than any of the DC protests since last October

You’re literally the white house lol. The home of the most powerful person, so they say. You can literally just tell Netanyahu to fuck off or shoot down his plane

JFC he's addressing Congress?

Like read the room, dummies. What the fuck does he need to address Congress for?

It's so cool that I used to read about Imperial Japan being sucked into an unwinnable forever war because it wasn't politically expedient to put it's foot down against its own colonial gendarmes and now I get to watch the US do the same in real time.

"history doesn't repeat but it rhymes" is honestly one of my favourite phrases bc of how concisely it encapsulates the dialectical materialist critique of metaphysical/cyclical models of history.

[-] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 2 years ago

Indeed, there are similar trends, but there's also the dialectic at play where a new synthesis constantly emerges. It's just just the same thing repeating over and over.

What is this, a wedding where the hammered father of the bride is about to give a speech?

[-] MayoPete@hexbear.net 18 points 2 years ago

Is this a common thing? Foreign leaders just get to give special speeches in front of other countries' legislative bodies?

When is Xi going to address Congress xi-vote

[-] Aradina@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

He addressed Australian parliament once so I guess the US Congress just isn't on his radar

Maybe they should try and take out their source of anxiety

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
