Community discovery communities

!newcommunities@lemmy.world - New Communities - A place to post new communities all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

!communitypromo@lemmy.ca - Community Promo - Promote your favourite communities and ask about communities that you are looking for!

!trendingcommunities@lemmy.cafe - Trending Communities - Daily post by a bot highlighting trending communities.

!lemmydirectory@lemmy.dbzer0.com - Lemmy Directory - This community has bots making regular posts showcasing best content from communities in given categories to help promote them.

!findacommunity@lemmy.ml - Find a Community - A community to find other communities in any of the Lemmy instances.

Community and instance discovery tools

Lemmy Explorer -A tool to search and filter for communities or instances. You can change the software in the top left to switch to PieFed Explorer or Mbin Explorer (I believe there are plans to have a combined search in the future)

Fediverse Observer - Find a Lemmy instance near you, or view instance lists, maps, or stats. Can also be used with other Fediverse software including PieFed and Mbin.

Some Fediverse software, including Mbin, Friendica, and Mastodon, uses # tags to help with discovery on the microblogging side. Mastodon also treats community names as tags in a given post, e.g. posts in both !fediverse@lemmy.world and !fediverse@piefed.social having the # fediverse tag when propagating to there.

Communities for other questions

!lemmy@lemmy.ml - Questions about Lemmy software/development

!piefed_help@piefed.social - Questions about Piefed software/development

!nostupidquestions@lemmy.world - Questions about any topic that you need help with

!asklemmy@lemmy.world - Open-ended questions to prompt discussion

For support with a specific instance (e.g. login/account issues, requests to mod), check in your instance's local communities to see if there is a help/support community, such as !support@lemmy.world for lemmy.world

The above was compiled to try to share active communities and resources to help with discovery. Some inactive communities were excluded, but could be added if they become active again. Please leave a comment if you want to add anything, or have any suggestions!

(These instructions are for using Lemmy in a browser. If you are using an app, some steps may differ.)

How to Join Lemmy

To use Lemmy, you need to be a member of one instance from the list at https://join-lemmy.org/instances. You will still be able to see content from anywhere, but the instance you choose will determine:

  • What URL you use to log in to Lemmy,
  • What content shows on the homepage when you select "Local" or "All",
  • Who moderates your instance, and
  • What rules you agree to when you sign up.

Choose an instance that matches your interests, language, and region. (If you want more information about an instance, you can tap its "Join" button, which will show you its current homepage in the main view and its description in the sidebar. You can also check the tables here and here.) Please avoid joining instances that are already crowded (1000+ users/month). If an instance gets overcrowded, it can start running slowly or experiencing downtime, so choosing an uncrowded instance will give both you and others a better Lemmy experience.

Once you have decided on an instance, tap its "Join" button to open it and then tap "Sign Up" in the upper-right corner. Fill out the form and wait for your account to be approved.

When your account is approved, log in and customize your profile and settings. If you change your language settings, select "Undetermined" in addition to any languages you speak so that you can still see posts and comments that are not tagged as being in any particular language.

How to Find and Subscribe to Communities

There are four ways to find communities through Lemmy:

  1. To browse communities that others in your instance are already subscribed to, tap the "Communities" tab at the top of the page and choose the "All" scope. Tapping on a community name will open it through your instance.

  2. To browse communities across all instances, visit https://browse.feddit.de/. Tapping on the community's name will open it, but probably not through your instance (in which case the page will say that you are not logged in). Instead, follow these steps:

    a. Copy the community's URL or remote name. You can use the copy button next to the community name, you can open the community outside your instance and copy the URL from your address bar, or you can open the community outside your instance and copy the remote name (which will look like [!community@instance.tld](/c/community@instance.tld)) from the sidebar.

    b. In your instance, tap on the "🔍 Search" button in the upper toolbar.

    c. Make sure that you have chosen "All" for each of the four filters: "Type", "Scope", "Community", and "Creator".

    d. Paste the community's URL or remote name into the search field and tap "Search".

    e. One of the results should be the community shown as an icon, a name, and a subscriber count. If you do not see it, or it is buried too deep in the search results, try changing "Scope" to "Local". If that does not work, you may need to wait a bit and try again.

    f. Tap on the community in the search results to open it in your instance.

  3. If you want an experience similar to Reddit's r/all, visit https://lemmy.directory/home/data_type/Post/listing_type/All/sort/Hot/page/1, which aggregates from these communities as described here. As in Option 2, you can copy and search for a community's URL to open it in your instance and subscribe to it.

  4. If you don't see a community by browsing, subscribe to https://lemmy.ml/c/findacommunity and make a post about what you're looking for.

Once a community is open in your instance, subscribe to it by tapping on the "Subscribe" button at the top of the sidebar. It will then appear in the "Subscribed" section of your "Communities" tab, and its posts will show on your home feeds.

Can't find a community you're looking for? If your instance allows it, you can create the community yourself by tapping "Create Community" in the upper toolbar.

And I don't mean Jujutsu Kaisen or Azumanga Daioh, I mean really hard to find mangas (or atleast that I can't find on Mangadex), like the Super Smash Bros one.

I've got plans to add a mid-sized solar system to my home this spring, and I'm wondering if there's a community appropriate for discussing that, asking questions, bouncing ideas around, etc.

The various technology communities seem too generic and more focused on tech coverage in the news. There's solarpunk technology, but it seems more about "here's how to use a magnifying glass and aluminum foil to cook an egg in 6 hours" and I'm looking for more practical discussions and solutions.

So is there a community for PV enthusiasts to talk shop?

So I've really been enjoying a lot of cheap jewelry on my days off and I really liked these slip-on false nails (it's actually a really fun stim like putting bugles on your fingers and clickety clacking them and tapping them on things) but they keep popping off the metal tabs on the rings and sometimes they're a lil uncomfy so I was trying to find little foam discs to put on the underside of the nails over the metal tab part of the rings that they're superglued to for extra structure and comfort but I can't find any small and thin enough. These ones are kinda small enough but they're still about 2x too thick and all my attempts to trim / thin them have gone poorly. The diameter isn't an issue that's easy enough to trim down but I need thinner ones (and without glitter, a bunch of them are craft supplies with glitter which would be very messy and scratchy). Any thoughts? Here's some reference pics with what I have now and the thumb and pinky nails for scale.

I'm looking for a community filled with people that would generally be considered weird, such as fictionkins, therians, and neurodivergent people in general like WeirdoTeens on Reddit but for all ages possibly and just "weirdos".

Going to be playing dnd again and haven't played since the 3-3.5 transition so I'd like to get some advice on some character concepts and get a general idea of how to advance them.

The opposite of a rant (swg-empire.de)

Is there a community that lets you post about awesome stuff that's happened? I'm looking for the opposite of !rant@lemmy.sdf.org.

Kind of like !mildlyinteresting@lemmy.world or !wholesome@reddthat.com but more in the direction of shouting into the world what great thing happened to you or you discovered recently.

I'm looking for communities to ask for recommendations for anything but also specific communities to ask the question "what are some English speaking Japanese content creators I can watch to learn more about Japan and Japanese culture"

I'm looking for a subreddit like asklemmy because I wanted to ask the a question about who people see as influential that shaped their progressive / kept leaving views for example Hayao Miyazaki

But I realised asklemmy might have a rule agsinst political posts so that's why I'm asking here

I'm looking for a Signal messenger community. The only really active one currently is the lemmy.ml one, but I'm banned from there.

I'm looking to avoid blahaj.zone or other authoritarian and strict instances

Would be glad if someone is willing to crosspost or share content somewhere else

I've searched but can't find any active communities where people discuss sex, post written erotica, hot stories, sexy confessions, or anything like it (text only). The only adult/NSFW communities I seem to find are about pictures/videos.

I had a bit of a look around and the food-related communities seem to either be a bit more specific or not just about recipe-sharing. Is there a community out there that's just for people to share recipes (whether ones they made themselves, or ones they found online and are recommending)?

Auditing (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Hello, I was curious if there are any communities on Lemmy that might be a good place to ask Auditors questions about what the job really entails and expectations.

Looking for somewhere to inquire because my family is looking into emigration from the US and seems like a good job in demand whilst hopefully being something that I can handle with my health issues.

Menieres is a disorder of the inner ear with the most pronounced symptoms being vertigo and hearing loss. I'd be happy with any mildly related communities also such as for non-visible disabilities, permanent progressive illnesses, hard of hearing, deaf, etc. I haven't found anything through searches yet and I'm not experienced enough to create or moderate my own community. Thanks!

Another community I missed lurking from the r*ddit days before the controversy on 2023, any instances hosting it?

I don't know whether anyone would be interested since I'm just a random person haha, but I want to start doing this for myself even without posting it. But since I'd be doing it, I thought I might as well post it.

However, I couldn't find a suitable community. There's !japanesemusic@feddit.de, but they have some rules that would conflict with what I would post. "Title of music posts should contain "Artist - Title" in Romaji, optionally additional tags like [year] [genre]", which doesn't work if the post would contain multiple songs. Also "Do not submit more than one link by the same artist per day", since it's highly likely at least one artist will show up with more than 1 song in any given month.

I found some other Japanese Music related communities too, but they're genre-specific, like City Pop.

Thanks for any help, but if there's no such community, that's also fine!
