Hello to all the new guys, gals, and enby pals. So glad you are here.

Just a heads up, this site is pretty leftist which means that it can and does sometimes get targeted by right-wing assholes and more. There is a nonzero chance that it will be (or even has been) targeted by the state.

Therefore, if you have your profile picture set to a real picture of yourself I would highly recommend that you don't. Of course, if you feel safe or whatever and want to strut your stuff then by all means. And additionally realize that just because you have a silly avatar or historical figure (mine is Lenin's mugshot) you can probably still be identified if someone really had full access to the backend and shit, because OPSec is hard and a million things expose you.

But I figure at least make a bad actor work for it.

Anyways, don't let me scare you I just wanted you to be informed and safe.

And once again, welcome!

You can call me Katy (she/her)

I used to lurk back when the name just changed to hexbear but after some fallout i decided to leave. I really like what you’ve done with the place 💁‍♀️ the vibes are exquisite.

I really like public transport and trying to get a city job like driving the bus or even working for USPS but ideally public transport is my thing. I love 1920s-1950s black and white obscure films and i occasionally go to a theatre every time i have the day off. Trying to map out every theatre in my area as a fun lil hobby.

I love pizza and candy and i used to love burritos but after making them about 50 thousand times i am no longer a fan 😔🥲. If you’re ever in my area I could make you one for free though so hmu if you’re in the area 😛also would be really fucking cool if i can unionize my store because I’ve been able to turn my coworkers more left just through having discussions with them and they all seem to be on board with everything i say. Slowly but surely!

But yeah, good to be back i guess even if its a different vibe than one I’m used too. Don’t be shy!

Hi! Hello there! (hexbear.net)
submitted 3 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Hi Hexbear! I am sick to death of what the modern internet has become. A few days ago, I came across a post that just said "Join Lemmy". OK, what the fuck is a Lemmy?

Hmmm... Private, independently run servers in a federated community network? Go on... What's this? A leftist instance centered around community building through discussion, shitposting memes, and sharing content? Go onnnnnn... Inclusive of all leftists, especially historically marginalized groups? Sign me up! Now I can finally ditch fucking reddit.

So hello! My interests include metalwork of all kinds (journeyman blacksmith, certified section IX welder and pipe fitter, and mediocre machinist), cats, computers and networking, digital privacy, 3D and 2D design including traditional media, cats, gaming, fitness, firearms, and did I mention cats?

Without doxxing myself, I can say that I am currently employed in the engineering field.

I would like to learn more about organizing strong local community networks as it's something I am notably bad at, having little to no experience.

Just wanted to say hello. Now I'll go back to lurking before I catastrophically own myself.

hello everyone :3

i go by kuiper and i've recently decided to limit my social media usage to decentralized and federated spaces as much as possible. i am very new to this and have a lot to learn. i've always thought privacy was important but never knew how to avoid being involved with nefarious companies. people gave up my rights to privacy when i was a kid in order to fight wars for profit so i didn't ever get the chance to protect myself. but here i am now! better late than never. i can do what i can at this point to restore my anonymity. if i divulge information that's my choice, not those outside of my control.

things about me.. i am a furry, yes. been in the fandom for eight years now. i love music so damn much. it's truly my passion hobby. i listened to 111 albums released in 2024 alone. i have 3,977 artists in my digital library and i'm always looking for more. feel free to recommend me stuff! huge fan of psychological horror too.

if you have any tips for a newcomer to the fediverse please share. i'd love to take advice from anyone.

Hey all, been lurking for a bit since the bluesky influx and thought I'd post an intro/response prompt. Most stuff are as in my bio, but I'm also a software engineer turned manager and have small humans I'm raising with my partner in our small portion of the world.

I don't want to doxx myself by sharing too much, but think it would be worth sharing three pieces of media:

  • one I found formative as a child
  • one I've been enjoying recently
  • one that I'm hella looking forward to

For the first, I'll admit to enjoying the perhaps somewhat problematic Settlers II (1996) by bluebyte software. I loved building the economic engine and the emergent pattern of hexagonal road networks that the isometric nodes of its world resulted in. It was the first game I enjoyed that had graphs as part of the metrics you could use to determine how well your colony was doing and I poured hours of myself into it. I didn't appreciate how colonialist it was at the time given that the game's main campaign puts you into the sandals of ancient Roman occupiers and defeating in-turn African, Scandinavian and East-Asian enemies (all of which have exactly the same mechanics as the player's colony - it's just the sprite graphics that were different!) before pitting you against another Roman faction. As these enemies are increasing in difficulty this results in some extremely problematic implications. The core game however was gorgeous.

Currently I'm enjoying the reboot of Mike Duncan's revolutions podcast with the latest series covering as speculative fiction a future Martian revolution. It has a great write up here, which I'll not attempt to emulate as it would be a poor facsimile at best, but suffice it to say that when I discovered there were six episodes of this new season I hadn't yet heard, I binged them all in both directions of my commute, loved every single moment, and am enjoying each weekly release as it continues to come out.

Finally in something I'm looking forward to, on a recent day out with my partner, we picked up from a lovely bookshop an anthology of solar punk short stories. I haven't had a lot of opportunity to read physical books in recent years, so very much look forward to diving into the pages and hope that there are some lessons for the future we can share with our family.

I invite others to share things of a similar vein and look forward to hearing them!

submitted 5 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Not well versed yet but I'll hopefully find my way.

May I ask for help? I was going through the pronouns list and -as expected tbh- mine are not in there. Whom do I hit up to get me settled if possible?

I guess I'll do one of these. It's not usually my style, but there are some things I want to do differently from now on. I feel like community is only going to be more critical going forward, so I've gotta start somewhere, right?

I'm already pretty experienced with the fediverse, but lemmy never really seemed to click (The obvious issues with Blåhaj and a few others) but it just never felt right, I guess? I don't know. This place seems more my speed. Also, after the kolektiva fiasco on mastodon, I'm more hesitant of joining until I feel like the I can trust the admin, at least a bit.

I'm going to make an effort to actually engage with the community here and not just be a shy lurker. Let's see lol

hi, just came from bluesky and this place looks really promising so far! i’m sara, nonbinary trans woman, 20s. i do little things with english (poetry) and computers. enjoy nature a ton and have spent a lot of time working outdoors. i really like creating things and sharing them with others when i feel satisfied enough with them (which is rarely, but still!)

anyways—excited to explore and learn how everything works. seems like there’s lots of cool serious stuff here as well as posteing and community vibes and that’s a lovely mix. already seeing some faces i recognize from bluesky. looking forward to getting acquainted with new ones 💜

Doing an #introduction post! 👋

A friend on Bluesky recommended this place; they really missed the easiest layup ever. I'm probably going to lurk here to figure out how best to interact with it, but it seems fun so far.

I'm a writer and artist. Unapologetically bi in a committed throuple. Mostly into fiction, music, and retro games.

I'm a veteran, but nothing has convinced me that the root cause of many of America's problems are white supremacy than having to work with senior military officers.

I wrote two complete (and one in-progress) sprite comics all set in the same universe that are story-driven, epic fantasies rather than comedy-driven stories.

If you enjoy the SNES RPGs from the Golden Age of Square Enix, then I think you will like my stories. (www.fortunasaga.com)

I'll probably spend most of my time on here talking about what ever game I'm currently obsessed with or writers block, hit me up if you wanna chat or something!

Hi all, I'm another Bluesky transplant. Late 30s bisexual trans woman. AnComm. Marx is cool. Still getting used to this site.

I have very limited resources but my hobbies include reading, working on my novel, gaming on my old PS3 (can't afford anything newer), and walking. I'm totally isolated where I am so I'd love to meet some like-minded comrades.

Hello, sorry if I don't quite do this correctly but I will learn.

I just came here today from Bluesky, and I am hoping to find a place to exist online that doesn't tolerate racists, bigots, or "but I'm just 'asking questions'" bigots.

My hobbies are PC gaming (mostly RPGs) and bearded dragons. I also like reading memes. I have autism and I tend to be shy and lurk, but I am trying to make an effort to be more outgoing.

Howdy! This is a comm for new and old users alike to introduce themselves and what their hobbies/interests are. This is also a good place to ask questions on anything you'd like to know more about, and generally to get acquainted with Hexbear and its users.

Rule #1: DON'T DOX YOURSELF - Don't post/comment any personal identifying information. Obviously it's ok to talk about yourself, but make sure there is no information that could potentially lead to doxxing yourself.

Rule #2: BE NICE - Assume everyone making a post here is doing so in good faith. Keep in mind that people introducing themselves may have limited knowledge of site history, in-jokes, etc. Also keep in mind that new people might not have the same understanding of leftist theory and/or knowledge of global politics that you do. We were all there once, so it's not a bad thing to be reasonably understanding and patient with new folks. Likewise, for those who are introducing yourselves, please have an open mind, be willing to interact and make friends, and don't come here with the intent to start fights.

Rule #3: DON'T BE A JERK - Any sort of transphobia, racism, homophobia, ableism, or other forms of bigotry will lead to an immediate ban. Similarly, harassment, being a creep, "chaser" behavior, or anything else done to make others feel uncomfortable will be dealt with harshly. Also try to keep any fediverse drama to a minimum. It's assumed new users are posting here to make friends and not to wade into any previous or existing conflict between instances, so please be respectful of that.

Rule #4: TRY TO BE HELPFUL - It's encouraged to help newcomers wherever possible, including explaining various aspects of this community, providing helpful resources, sharing similar interests you may have, and suggesting comms that they may be interested in.

Rule #5: USE CONTENT WARNINGS - For anything that might be considered a sensitive topic, please use the spoiler format along with a content warning to give people a heads up on what is being discussed.

If anyone has any feedback or any suggestions for improvement to this comm, don't hesitate to reach out to the mods here. Thanks!
