Goes hard...
Your restraint is greatly appreciated cause I waa fuckin CHEERING when that spike-projectile thing obliterated Mister Heterosexual's right hand!!! Imagine introducing a confirmed straight guy explicitly for the purpose of having your chad salamander dismember and eat himChar as in Char Aznable? "I came here to laugh at you" guy? Neat, Now I Know!! Indiscriminate murder is fine too, but tbh someone like Norn will proooobably bump into somebody she has history with eventually? This is way better than the Vogelheim arc though, yeeeeeee.
Ty, noted, I'll grab the new one tonight and load it up because I'll be fucked if I get stuck at work or whatever without more Unjust Depths to read...
::: spoiler hell yeah it's so fucking good, i got to that bit and immediately messaged my gf to talk about how much it owns. idk why she's texan either, but i approve
yeah, the i came here to laugh at you guy. that's from zeta gundam, where he's reuniting with his rival (the main character of first gundam) and being SUPER homoerotic. like, 'they are a pivotal part of the history of yaoi' levels of homoerotic. in first gundam his two biggest moves are tricking one noble into dying pointlessly to the enemy, then by the end he's worked his ways into the first guy's sister's good graces so he can hit her with a bazooka headshot as she flees the final battle

norn definitely isn't just aimlessly murdering forever, i'll tell you that much, but this chapter certainly isn't a massive revenge scheme
you definitely wouldn't run out anytime soon, but better safe than sorry!
c:
I'm gonna have to tell my wife about how much it owns, how it was totally worth waiting for the Norn stuff to git gud ✨I know about Zeta Gundam a bit, I think you or someone else posted this gif recently, which fucks and is rad.
I look forward to potential future schemes from her!! Also my reader says I'm like 1/3rd through this epub so I think I'm making good time. I'm excited to get current.
yeah!
it's so good!lmao im always posting this gif, it's a great gif. having just watched a bunch of bad, extremely lib gundam im a little burned out on gundam, but man that core uc stuff is very strong. char aznable is one of the characters of all time
you might be caught up by the next chapter tbh, since it's on break through april. it's a real treat being able to discuss them as they come out, on the discord and with friends and on here
Woah...
It is ✨Oh no not lib gundam, why would gundam be lib :/ So Zeta has earned its classic status then?
There's a fuckin UNJUST DEPTHS DISCORD????? But yeah with any luck, I'll be happy to add my takes to the megas when new chapters drop :)
i got REAL autistic about gundam in here
yeah :( honestly most gundam by volume might be lib (including the recent witch from mercury (the first gundam to have an openly queer woman of color as the protagonist (the real first one was turn a but she's still boymoding there))). a consistent thing gundam has a problem with outside the things tomino (the original creator) and a few outliers is that they'll bring up very interesting material problems and handle them really well for a bit and by the end they completely forget them in favor of some bullshit about "we just need to open our hearts and understand each other!" if your protagonist cannot express any motivation beyond "i'm fighting for tomorrow!" without any specifics of what that tomorrow looks like, you have officially libbed out. first gundam did end with these magical moments where people can truly begin to understand each other, but it understood that that isn't going to solve every material problem, there are still fascists that need their heads bazooka'd and people uniting in scifi magic harmony isn't going to convert them to the side of goodby the time zeta gundam rolls around people are basically exclusively using their psychic powers for superweapons and the moments of true human connection don't ever truly work out, to the point where it completely breaks the protagonist (transmasc antifa king kamille bidan). zz, the sequel to zeta, has a more optimistic view on how those moments of connection can still change things and be important to individuals, but they aren't going to magically make the federation not suck. the federation is always going to suck unless changed through force
zeta is probably the worst of tomino's gundams, it's kind of a slog to get through and has some massive misogyny problems. but it's still ultimately pretty good, and is definitely a classic with some great all time moments. turn a is a perfect show, 0079 and zz both easily clear, victory has PROBLEMS but also some of the highest highs in gundam. the other gundams i'd say are for sure worth watching are 0080 (which is only 6 episodes so is the length of a long movie) and ibo (which is also the only completely standalone one here, though it has some stuff that only hits if you've seen at least 0079) which are also both better than zeta. zeta is the worst of the good gundams, but it's still pretty good on the whole
for context i started writing this whole thing like 15 minutes after you replied
and yeah there's a discord, i get an @ every update so i can drop everything and read immediately and join the discussion
Oh nice, autism!
Wauw that is a downright impressive amount of Gundam autism, very good! :)Okay I have seen you say that about Turn A once or twice, is that like a "really obvious undertones my headcanon" thing, or is it actual real intentional serious thing that the director said was real? I hate having to ask this but like, while as described I'd literally watch Turn A, my coffee maker has one job and I can't put in for coffee undertones. I want Turn A to be real instead of a meme though :(
Also not only does that suck badly about Witch from Mercury (what a hardcore banger title) but also that so much of Gundam would just be silly idealist platitudes, like that is a lib-ass view of war, even if the war is a space war with giant robots. I wasn't expecting fullcommunism anyway, that's what Unjust Depths is for, but for so many different Gundams to be ending basically with power of friendship bs... officially libbed out indeed.
Woah okay, shit, I sorta had it in mind maybe someday to watch Zeta after the og but fuck that I guess.... It's unfortunate but I did go into Depths knowing I was gonna be fucking ruined for any Gundam, and realistically probably any other mecha anime in general afterword. It almost doesn't make sense, it's kind of like [completely incomprehensible reference to some book you've never heard of], I guess maybe I coulda watched a couple seriws of gun-dam as preparation before this, that would have let me watch the evolution more naturally to get to the absolute zenith of written fiction we see before us. I feel a little blackpilled as stands.
I'm gonna go dig that up or sign up to a mailing list or some shit cause I want up to the minute updates too!!
::: spoiler even more gundam autism oh, sorry to disappoint you. turn a is just obvious undertones, but like. enough that i do just straight up she/her the main character. due to a misunderstanding the enemy faction believes the gundam pilot is a woman, so when there's a big party where they're hoping to sign a peace deal (in like episode 7, not really a spoiler) loran goes as a woman and gets really into doing all the necessary feminine things, and continues doing so at several later points. when asked why she didn't say no she goes "well it's my duty, right? so i'll do it :)" and looks really happy as the other person looks kinda skeptical but decides to help, and when asked if it was a disguise goes "uh, no" and can't elaborate on what exactly dressing up like that means. it helps that there are zero transphobic man in dress jokes made.
combined with the rest of turn a's gender politics (good! the women are all super interesting and compelling and have complex relations to the gender roles of their society) and the way it handles other issues of identity, i do think it's bordering intentional? like, it is objectively doing Gender with loran, and if i were to say to tomino "i think loran is a transgender woman" i doubt he'd deny it, but no, it is in fact something you have to read into it, as sad as that is
yeah it's a bummer. a lot of them don't lib out though, none of the tomino gundams (0079, zeta, zz, cca, victory, turn a) do that, and 0080 and ibo also definitely don't do that. all of them have endings that may involve amounts of psychic stuff but do not say "and now the whole world is fixed :)" like some of the others do and are at best bittersweet. but after watching 00 (which EXTREMELY libs out) and being stuck on g gundam (boring as sin) i am burned out on gundam, hence me watching star trek
i wouldn't say not to watch zeta, but i wouldn't blame anyone who didn't want to. and that's just my opinion on it, there are a lot of people who love it and don't think it's a slog at all and have genuinely interesting reads on the way the misogyny happens as being commentary, which though i don't personally agree with i don't think it's out of the question. but yeah (even though i liked it!) i think it's kinda weak. but it leads right into zz which is much better.
if you wanna watch gundam and aren't going to watch the whole thing, my 3 series recommendation is 0079 -> ibo -> turn a. i think the three of them are all excellent and probably aren't ruined by unjust depths. 0079 gives you a strong idea of what exactly the whole thing is based around and on its own has basically everything relevant to unjust depths, and is a very good story in its own right if you aren't turned off by the 70s animation. pretty basic war story but told very well. iron blooded orphans has some weird stuff about gender in the first ~third but mostly gets over itself. it's got really interesting politics that it handles very well, an incredibly strong ending ~10 episodes, and is probably the best the franchise gets in terms of cool mech fights. it's also got some bits that you don't NEED to have seen 0079 to enjoy but you'll definitely get more from them if you have. finally, turn a is just incredible, i cannot say enough good things about it. the whole cast is compelling, it's a beautiful show with a beautiful ost, the setting is incredibly unique, and the themes make a great capstone to what gundam as a franchise is all about. it's a very meta, introspective show by a team at the top of their game making a show that's complex while still being easy to parse
This is now a gundam autism support group!
No apologies needed, I looked at the wiki page and I was like "1998? There's no fucking way that's real" because y'know. I hear about stuff like Wonder Egg Priority or Inside Mari, and I think it's cute than anime & manga are nudging towards genuine queer representation but realistically I have completely lost my sanity, and nobody should try to pander to me about it. Fwiw, what you describe about Turn A might make it funny enough to be worthwhile anyway, like for the 90s especially I'd have expected untold billions of man in dress jokes. I guess there's not nothing there. Pretty gender, can't knock that. Maybe worth reading that into it.Y'know I do dig the psionic powers but in Unjust Depths at current, it feels kinda like the balance of power is being thrown out by evil empresses that can ZA WARUDO or just brainwash untold thousands over a video screen :> Also do Gundam series have the silliest names/numbers/subtitles or what? Wtf is 0080, I know some of these are unofficial monikers (because "Upside-Down-A-Gundam" would be goofy) but sheesh! Fwiw I'd be kinda hesitant to read an 80s anime's misogyny as commentary too, lmao.
Oh cool cool, so you'd recommend the original's OG tv run instead of the OVAs? Some sad fed once told me to just watch the OVAs so I'm curious :) I fucking love 70s animation is the problem, I have the absolute worst brain rot in that the more obviously jank and hand-drawn/composited/etc your animated thing is, the more obviously 70s or 80s it is, the more I wanna smell that. Old anime smells so fucking goooooood
I'm thankful for the non-committed nerd's guide to gundam series, 0079 to IBO to Turn A! I can keep these in mind for a rainy day or something, and to be frank the Unjust Depths meta-intertext is probably gonna drive me to check out some gundang someday. I've had it vaguely on my radar forever and now the thing I like ks hugely inspired from it, so congrats on planting that brainworm in me!!
I think the main issue I have is sitting down for a long TV series feels like a way bigger commitment than even reading a kabillion-word-long webnovel, for some reason. I like your summaries of those three though, and they do all sound pretty appealing in various ways. Someday...
::: spoiler gundam! i mean, there are legit trans characters in anime and manga, including ones from the 90s and earlier, but sadly none explicitly in as major a position in a mainstream thing that i can think of. like, there's stop! hibari-kun, and that's the closest thing i can think of. but there IS a lot of stuff that has Gender, which isn't as good but sustained me as an egg and i still have a fondness for
ok so the number name thing is funny, the original show was called mobile suit gundam but like, so are all the others. it's mobile suit gundam: iron blooded orphans, mobile suit victory gundam, etc. and fans can't do the star trek thing and call it gundam the original series because there is a prequel to it called gundam the origin so it'd be too confusing. so instead it's called 0079, because it takes place in the year 0079 of the universal century. humanity restarted calendars once the first true space colonies were starting to be settled, making that year 0001. 79 years later the events of the show mobile suit gundam (1979) happened. the show 0080 (full title of mobile suit gundam 0080: war in the pocket) takes place around the end of 0079 and ends in the year 0080, with the year actually being in the official title. there's 2 other shows with year titles, 0083: stardust memories, and the tv broadcast of gundam unicorn (gundam unicorn re:0096) which also refer to the year they take place in. also turn a gundam is the official way to say the name of the show out loud, they announce it at the start of the op, so 0079 is the only one where i'm not either using the official name or an abbreviation of the same
yeah i'd absolutely recommend the tv show over the movies. the movies reanimate some stuff and generally look better than the show (i like the way the show looks but the movie has some STRONG visuals especially in the 3rd one which is like 50% new animation) but cut some episodes i really like, and are weirdly paced for the first 2. the 3rd movie is worth watching even if you watched the show, it adds some cool stuff, but idk that the other two are. like, they're a totally passable alternative if you really wanna save the time, but they aren't as good. the 70s animation in 0079 is super good and very 70s, you're in for a treat
o7. i'm just watching the whole franchise lmao, but i definitely can't recommend everyone do that. i was gonna do it in production order after watching the first few episodes of witch from mercury and really liking them, just but my (now ex-)girlfriend asked me to watch some other shows with her out of order (which i had a great time with but regret because most of the gundam i have left seems not amazing), and a podcast i listen to that does marxist analysis of gundam started 00 so i watched that out of order as well and will continue watching along with them as they watch in production order
hmm. i could maybe make a small adjustment to the gundam crash course, which would be to watch 0080 before 0079 (0080->0079->ibo->turn a). 0080 is a totally standalone thing that works better if you know the lore but works fine without knowing anything and tells a pretty strong story (with a VERY on the nose moral) in only 6 episodes. it's got those 80s ova vibes as well, which is a big plus. i would recommend the first order i gave but if you think this'd be an easier on-ramp than 43 episodes of 0079, i think it'd still work well
Y'know giant robots are kinda funny...
When I think about trans characters in anime from the 90s and earlier, I'm likeOhhhhh okay!! That makes sense actually, now the titles all look less like a huge mess, although I find it funny that "Turn A Gundam" is official. I guess given how many different Gundams there are, that's admirably well sorted. That was a lot about names :)
I see, I'm not interested in saving time at the cost of quality, lol. I do hate when abridged versions cut important things like that. I'll keep the third OVA in my back pocket too! I don't really have other anime that I intend to watch (anime delenda est) so 0079/IBO/TurnA will mostly be competing against, uh Unjust Depths till I catch up :3
Marxist gundam analysis sounds pretty awesome honestly, but rip to starting with the best stuff and only leaving boring junk so you have to take a Star Trek break. Also your mentioning your ex makes me kinda wish I could have dragged whatever s/o at the time through whatever I was reading or watching, make it a cooperative project...
Okay cool, I did not know that was a thing =) I'm kinda split on whether watching 0080 or 0079 first would be better, I guess it'll depend on what kind of mood I'm in. 0080 first for least resistance, 0079 first for coherency & production order. Good crash course, ty comrade
::: spoiler giant robo is a different anime actually the #1 classic anime trans woman i remember is the girl from you're under arrest, who is sadly a cop. yeah, there are those but i uh. decided not to count them on account of. well you get it. i am totally guilty of the same love of , i love ienaga from golden kamuy (who eats women to take on their attributes, like a womans tongue to get her voice, etc. she's like a legit fleshed out character and there are way more serial killers than just her so i think it's actually about as sensitive as a character like that can be)
yeah, same. but as abridged versions go the 0079 compilations are about as good as it gets, in that they are at least internally coherent
yeah lmao. i could have gone on longer, for example! most gundam anime are named after the main gundam. turn a has the turn a gundam, wing has the wing gundam, 00 gundam has the 00 gundam. exceptions: char's counterattack, hathaway's flash, all the ovas, reconquista in g, iron blooded orphans, and g-witch. if you know the release order of gundam (which you probably don't) you'll recognize most of those are from the last decade. seemingly they decided gundam age was the last time they'd ever do that
it's a pretty good podcast. i've still got some good ones ahead of me, but not for a while if i'm watching in production order
yeah, of course!
I forgor lol
Ew cop, okay I'm fine with murder but being a cop is where I draw the fucking lineI'm always kinda resistant to using filler guides most days, I suppose skipping stuff that's there just feels weird...
Oh yeah, I kind of wondered if there was a pattern to the names, neat! Also I have enjoyed ur overstuffed infodumps and accrued much knowledge from them, so thank you
it actually has the same director as g gundam!
i definitely already posted this chart and i think you saw it, but it's one of my favorite things so i'll post it again. suffice it to say i ABSOLUTELY relate to your love of this type of womanyeah, there's only one episode of 0079 that i think is acceptable to skip, and its one they took out of most releases of the show. if it's in whatever release you use then you might as well watch it and if it isn't there's no need to actively seek it out. it's a totally fine episode that happens to look janky as hell (the poor animation quality is why it was removed, they're embarrassed of it) and not really add anything thematically or plotwise, so no need to worry either way
i couldn't really help myself lmao, so i'm glad you appreciated them
TIL!
Pfffffffffff it gets better every time I look at itOoh that's so curious, I don't know if I've ever seen an episode removed for poor animation quality! Nowadays they'd just re-animate whatever portion for home media after the initial broascast/stream, very neat!!
yeah imagawa does a lot of mecha anime
i love the chart so muchyeah, all the mobile suits are SUPER off model, i think the animation director had just been hospitalized so they really aren't proud of it and there's no real need to watch it, so it just generally doesn't show up. i think it's like a bonus on the bluray release or something
