unjust depths spoilers up to the same
that's how you know this is peak fiction, khadija is so good
i LOVE gertrude desperately chasing after them, thinking they kidnapped her gf. she's going feral there, it's really good. this is where the juicy drama really kicks in. also ulyana being so confused is great, none of them made any mistakes! she's like "huh, ok she thinks i'm a smuggler? i guess i'll try and bribe her" not realizing what gertrude actually thinks. i love how everyone in this is working with different amounts of information and making their choices based on that. them going "oh i guess she's after marina" is great
and the divers are a good squad, i love and appreciate them all. just really fun to see them all in their element
Discussions of plot happenings up to now!
Peak fiction indeedY'know, I said before that making the fash all gay can affect the extent to which I believe they are evil fash, but honestly seeing that this is the end result, uncritical support. When you follow the Bad Dudes in the Blackland New Republic in The Last Girl Scout, (or the terfs of Maryland in Manhunt even) they aren't cardboard cutouts, they have depth and desires and relationships, but their stories are constructed with the assumption that you'll hate them because they're outwardly racist freaks and fetishists, both, and the plot acts with this correct assumption in mind. You want to see them dead. Kind of a bold choice to make me genuinely sympathise with the High Inquisitor in her feral quest to get gf! What happens if I support both sides for gay reasons???? It's so saucy! I adore a Gertrude who has lost her cool, so unlike her...
Oh yeah the entire leadup was such a banger, I felt really bad for Murati there for a sec, but yesssssss knowing all of what's going on and seeing our gays work with 50% at best is awesome, the amount of times I said "OH NO" this book, it's great. Peak peak fiction. I wanna see inside the Iron Lady's bridge next omg.
plot plot plot
yeah, gertrude is really interesting. she just wants to save her gf, but is uh. ideologically sus, to say the least. but at the same time she genuinely thinks (not entirely without reason) her gf has been kidnapped and is being kept for ransom (which isn't helped by some of ulyana's comments in their conversations) so it's hard to get too mad at her here (other than for the whole being a cop in an empire thing)yeah the way the mech combat is written is great
High Inquisitor My Beloved
I noticed, NOTICED, her talking about Sieglund (Unjust Depths is a test of my name memorisation skills, the red baron lady yknow) being reliable because she is a "pureblood"... my most conflicted critical supportOhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Khajida and Siegwhatserface have a paaaast, oooooh!!!!
::: spoiler gertrudeposting elena would 100% love to be with gertrude wherever that may be, so if gertrude got her hands on elena she could probably manage that. i wrote a bunch more but realized it had spoilers and implications about stuff, so i will leave it at that
also yessssss khajida and sieglinde!!! depressed milf war veterans with tension is so good
And more!
Would be rad, and as much as I sympathise with Marina I also do respect Elena's attempt to melt her brain with psionics actually. I like that she's showing initiative! We love our "mature women" having mech battles to settle old scores, don't we folks?!
relatedly it's funny how Unjust Depths' narration seems to be carefully dancing around it, using any possible term other than "OOH OOH SAUCY MILFS ON YOUR UNDERCOVER MISSION" no matter how awkward they sound. Normal, lol
::: spoiler saucy milfs i am rooting for elena to get what she wants (and to also figure out what exactly she wants other than gertrude)
yeah lmao. you love to see it! it would probably work better if it just straight up started calling them milfs, but that's fine
Milfin'...
It'd sure be a lot more tasteless... I actually really enjoy that Depths' cast is borderline generational and features a range of ages, it's only slightly awkward as stands that they're all mommy dommies. Three character archetypes in Unjust Depths, sorted by age:early 20something bright eyed and inexperienced optimist!
late 20s/early 30s gloomy sadgirl!
40+ uwu step on me mommy!
It's a special kinda smell.
milfin makes me feel good
to be fair there's a lot of variation within said archetypes. like, sieglinde is probably closer in personality to the 30s sadgirl than to khadijayou are right though
Yaw...
It's worthy to note that this isn't inherently a criticism, but there is a pattern emerging. I like Sieglinde more than I thought I would though! Also the bit with Khajida and Shalikova in the simulator, that was very cool much enjoyment.khadija
yeah for sure. the pattern is theresieglinde is cool, i like how depressed she is. and yeah that simulator flashback is good. i like their bonding and shalikova learning from the best
