Assuming this isn’t a bit, “sick as a dog” is a common expression in the US.
Trump definitely has a thing about dogs. He's constantly comparing people to dogs, and he's notably uncomfortable around dogs.
He said that an ISIS leader “died like a dog” too so it’s definitely a running theme
