"Sweet summer child" comes from game of thrones and I am sick of hearing it said unironically in public. It makes no sense outside of game of thrones. It is such a Reddit phrase. "Oh but banme actually it shows up-" it has been used in literature about 2 times before game of thrones and neither of those times with the meaning it has in public use and of course not! Because it doesn't make sense outside of game of thrones.
Might as well be out here exclaiming Excelsior or Bazinga

I've never seen GoT, didn't know it was from GoT, and it made perfect sense to me from the get-go. I will continue to say it and frankly you just sound like you're whining lmao

I am whining! I am whining about the phrase being used because it annoys me, that is what whining is. There's this weird cultural obsession with not having emotional reactions, to which I do not subscribe. The whole "oho you seem to care about something? What a loser!" Seems deeply toxic to me. Even when it's about pointless bs like this. It's a common trick used to belittle others, and thankfully it's against hexbears code of conduct now.

on one hand yeah but on the other it's one of the most basic 'human consuming art' things in the world, to take a phrase or an idea from the art and bring it with you into your day-to-day. 'sweet summer child' presumably took off because it's immediately digestible even without the context of game of thrones, despite the literal meaning depending on that worlds fantasy elements

doesn't mean it can't be annoying or cringe to you but it should be expected

Yeah it is very normal for people to do it and it makes sense and all that. I find it annoying still, mainly because

  • Redditism
  • People insist it's not from GoT

It would be like if "may the odds be ever in your favor" became a thing people just said

You really bazingaed with this comment.

I totally cowabungaed. turtle power. holds three fingers up and whistles that thing from the hunger games may the odds be ever in your favor

I feel like it's perfectly sensible on its own. Summer is childike, you think it's gonna be warm and bright forever, and winter is harsh reality that you become accustomed to with age. There are plenty more inane phrases that we treat as normal

[-] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net -1 points 10 hours ago

It really doesn't make sense on it's own. You don't think its gonna be warm and bright forever, that connotation only exists because of game of thrones.

[-] RION@hexbear.net 6 points 7 hours ago

when you're a kid summer feels like forever

[-] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 1 points 1 hour ago

So does spring and winter and autumn.

[-] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 0 points 10 hours ago
