Denial can fuck you up.

I also think its a learned behavior to "not think too much" because that can lead to danger or punishment.

I remember being told when I Duolingo'd Arabic years ago that people would think I was a terrorist. They complain about thought police when they're the ones policing everyone's thoughts.
